US President Donald Trump is seeking $152m (£115m) to reopen the infamous Alcatraz prison as part of his proposed budget for the 2027 fiscal year.

Located near San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, the site, also known as The Rock, was once regarded as one of America's most notorious prisons, but has served as a tourist attraction in recent years.

The budget request is seeking money "to rebuild Alcatraz as a state-of-the-art secure prison facility", with funds covering the first year of costs.

The plan has been met with scepticism by a number of politicians in California, with questions raised about the final cost of the project and the challenges of running Alcatraz as an active prison.

The maximum security facility was closed in 1963. As a tourist site, it is currently run by the National Park Service.

Only on the condition that it's only used to imprison him, the members of his administrations, and the architects at organizations like the heritage foundation, and then I'll even chip in some of my own money.

[-] homes@piefed.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

And that it continue to be used as a tourist site, so people can go there and look at him and the other prisoners there like zoo animals.

[-] Steve@startrek.website 1 points 3 weeks ago

Look at? You get to piss on them from above.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

One more condition.

The tourists have access to a button that injects Trump with a tiny, survivable dose of the nerve gas from The Rock.

[-] ProfessorHoover@infosec.pub 1 points 3 weeks ago

Wouldn't that just get pushed until he dies anyway, like that Black Mirror episode where they torture the uploaded consciousness of a man for entertainment?

[-] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

It could be his own Elba. I would be willing to chip in for that while we eradicate Trumpists from government.

[-] 4grams@awful.systems 11 points 3 weeks ago

What a fucking moron.

[-] phoenixarise@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

$152 million won’t even bring it up to code. The answer is no. Quit distracting us with this nonsense and just go to Hell. Satan’s waiting.

[-] TwilitSky@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Alcatraz was closed because it was a scam not worth operating like Trump's casinos and his marriages.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

I thought it was because maintaining an island is a bitch and it's easier to build a prison in the middle of a desert with the same effect IE Fulton.

[-] TwilitSky@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah so the boat company made money the supply companies. The city and government of San Francisco. Everyone was on the take.

One of many deeply frustrating things about Trump's fire hose of terrible and frequently actively evil ideas is that not only do they come in such volumes that it's overwhelming, but it's also incredibly hard to tell if something is a brief fixation he will quickly move on from or something that is going to be a recurring issue to deal with.

Which is to say: Christ, he's back on this one again?

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Lock up the Trump administration there. No heat no nothing f those losers

[-] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Buddy, $152m won’t even bring it up to code. Not that he cares.

[-] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 0 points 3 weeks ago

Been a minute since I’ve been there—is there even a source of potable water on the island, or was that shipped in as well?

[-] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

Nope. All shipped in.

[-] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

It’s still all shipped in and out to my knowledge.

[-] daannii@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

So apparently water has to be brought to it in tanks. And most of it is crumbling.

It was closed for good reasons.

[-] kreskin@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

He's spending money like crazy on useless stuff we dont need.

[-] trackball_fetish@lemmy.wtf 1 points 3 weeks ago

As intended. They're trying to crash the dollar/currency system to replace it with some crypto backed nonsense. Well that and to make sure the technofascists can own everything.

[-] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

Isn't it technically a national park? Therefore the direct property of the United States people?

[-] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Trump technically works for the people. I don't think technicalities matter anymore.

[-] trackball_fetish@lemmy.wtf 1 points 3 weeks ago

Like the national parks they're attempting to sell? You gotta understand, there is no law anymore. Without enforcement, they are just words.

[-] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

The Rock has been on the TV again I see

[-] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

it would cost a lot more than that.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

Have him tour the place and do the part where they put him in a cell and lock it. But then skip the part where they open it back up.

There's a webpage by a former fundamentalist on .. would Evangelicals recognize the antichrist?

Then he goes through the Christian & Jewish prophecies..

Here's 1 from Book of Daniel, ch 11: notice the explicit mention of strongholds/fortresses..

36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt himself and consider himself greater than any god, and he will utter monstrous blasphemies against the God of gods. He will prosper only until the period of wrath is over, for what has been determined must take place. 37 He will show no respect for the gods his ancestors worshipped, or for the god women worship — he won’t show respect for any god, because he will consider himself greater than all of them. 38 But instead, he will honor the god of strongholds; with gold, silver, precious stones and other costly things he will honor a god unknown to his ancestors. 39 He will deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. He will confer honor on those he acknowledges, causing them to rule over many and distributing land as a reward.

That's from CJB, which obviously Benjamin L. Corey doesn't use, but I find it less-overinterpreted, cleaner to the source material, & usually giving a clearer-view into the warnings..

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Daniel+11&version=CJB

The antichrist page is https://www.benjaminlcorey.com/could-american-evangelicals-spot-the-antichrist-heres-the-biblical-predictions/ with its section on fortresses..

Please keep in mind that

  1. any time your continuum/soul is trying to communicate MEANING to you, that communication must go through your unconscious-mind and it will distort the message, as it is acting as a "lens".. AND

  2. the more your unconscious-mind's assumptions are strong, the more-distorting they are of the message. I complain about modern bibles over-interpreting/distorting the messages, but Daniel himself was distorting the message, because he was re-mapping it onto his local geopolitics, instead of letting it pertain to countries which had no basis in his world ( & Daniel was among the best of the visioneers )

  3. humankind's history is cyclical: the biblical prophecies about the "towering monster, with steel teeth & clay feet" kind of thing actually refers to end-of-Age empire, strong, but decaying/rotted/corrupt .. which happens to match BOTH The Roman Empire AND The US's Empire.

So, there's a kind of double-refraction going-on, which has to be managed, too.

Do see it for the brilliant warning it was, though: there's stuff in Daniel ( about the "tribulation" ), & in Rev ( about "armageddon" ) which exactly pertains to what's unfolding, now..

I'd prefer it be called The Great Filter, because that's what it is, functionally: it filters-out all the won't-grow-up world-species, force-extinguishing 'em all.

The American Indians called it The Great Purification, & have been knowing about it for the last 9-10 centuries.

Anyways, when one sees through the appearances, to know what actually is usable, then the warnings of the past sometimes forearm one, re the pending changes.

To use as a political prison.

[-] santa@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

Dude grasping at straws at this point…

[-] eletes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

I can't imagine his friends at Geo group want it

[-] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Donnie, honey, tell me you’ve never been to Alcatraz without telling me you’ve never been to Alcatraz.

[-] night_petal@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

I fucking hate being stuck in the US. It is legitimately embarrassing. I wish I could move, but that takes years and tens of thousands of dollars to do correctly, even if you were to try to go somewhere with a low GDP.

[-] Akasazh@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Apex symbol politics

[-] umbraroze@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 weeks ago

Of course Trump wants to reopen Alcatraz.

It is famously a prison where the worst criminals went. And just as famously, a prisoner escaped, never to be seen again.

He's just planning ahead. Personal plans. They're not particularly good plans, they're not cunning plans - in fact, they're pretty stupid plans, to be perfectly honest.

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 0 points 3 weeks ago

That dipshit isn’t even asking for Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris to work there?

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 0 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I've been to Alcatraz prison and gone on the tour and one of the things that she spoke about was how much of a pain it was being on an island. Since you're totally the mercy of the sea is to whether or not you can get supplies in.

The only real advantage of Alcatraz was that it was difficult to escape from but you can get the exact same result with fencing and guards, so there's no point putting up with the logistical challenges have been stuck on an island, which is why it was closed.

[-] monketman82@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

What makes you think dUmpf wants to provide supplies to the island?
