Julius Nyerere, born on this day in 1922, was a socialist and anti-colonial Tanzanian politician who promoted a Pan-Africanist ideology known as Ujamaa, which means "extended family" or "brotherhood" in Swahili.

Julius Kambarage Nyerere was born on April 13, 1922 in Butiama, on the eastern shore of lake Victoria in north west Tanganyika. His father was the chief of the small Zanaki tribe. He was 12 before he started school (he had to walk 26 miles to Musoma to do so). Later, he transferred for his secondary education to the Tabora Government Secondary School. His intelligence was quickly recognized by the Roman Catholic fathers who taught him. He went on, with their help, to train as a teacher at Makerere University in Kampala (Uganda). On gaining his Certificate, he taught for three years and then went on a government scholarship to study history and political economy for his Master of Arts at the University of Edinburgh (he was the first Tanzanian to study at a British university and only the second to gain a university degree outside Africa. In Edinburgh, partly through his encounter with Fabian thinking, Nyerere began to develop his particular vision of connecting socialism with African communal living.

On his return to Tanganyika, Nyerere was forced by the colonial authorities to make a choice between his political activities and his teaching. He was reported as saying that he was a schoolmaster by choice and a politician by accident. Working to bring a number of different nationalist factions into one grouping he achieved this in 1954 with the formation of TANU (the Tanganyika African National Union). He became President of the Union (a post he held until 1977), entered the Legislative Council in 1958 and became chief minister in 1960. A year later Tanganyika was granted internal self-government and Nyerere became premier. Full independence came in December 1961.

In 1962, Nyerere was elected the first president of Tanganyika, a predecessor to modern Tanzania and a newly independent republic. His administration emphasized decolonizing society and the state, also unsuccessfully pursuing a Pan-Africanist East African Federation with Uganda and Kenya.

In 1967, Nyerere issued the "Arusha Declaration", forbidding government leaders from owning shares or holding directorates in private companies, receiving more than one salary, or owning any houses that they rented to others. In compliance with this declaration, Nyerere sold his second home and his wife donated her poultry farm to a local co-operative.

Nyerere’s integrity, ability as a political orator and organizer, and readiness to work with different groupings was a significant factor in independence being achieved without bloodshed. In this he was helped by the co-operative attitude of the last British governor — Sir Richard Turnbull. In 1964, following a coup in Zanzibar (and an attempted coup in Tanganyika itself) Nyerere negotiated with the new leaders in Zanzibar and agreed to absorb them into the union government. The result was the creation of the Republic of Tanzania.

Nyerere's government also aided in liberation struggles elsewhere in Africa, training and aiding anti-apartheid South African groups and helping to depose Ugandan ruler Idi Amin. In 1985, Nyerere stepped down as President and was succeeded by Ali Hassan Mwinyi in a notably peaceful and stable transition of power.

"Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and the African peoples to be disregarded and humiliated."

I now own a rice cooker (my friend offloaded it onto me) what should I do with it

(I've always just done stove top rice like, it's already pretty fucking easy to make good rice, I don't honestly foresee it resulting in me eating more rice)

Keep hearing about more warehouse fires and shit but no one is talking about how badly equipped these warehouses are to deal with fires in the first place. Maybe they just do that sometimes all I'm saying if the fire alarms and sprinklers aren't set to deal with that then maybe it's on the capitalist class to assess they risk lost analysis porky-scared we got winners and losers here and it's on them for not seeing this as a possibility

The brave humans won our game of battlestar galactic this time, I'm proud to one of them im-doing-my-part what you need to know is the robots will use their cold unfeeling facts and logic to turn one against another but I discarded that and used my gut beanis nurtured by beans it's more powerful than any super computer.

Theres that one character that can use a once per game and kill another player, and I called my shot someone was a Cylon like turn two and was fucking right. I think I got promoted to admiral for it too

this is why serious programmers don't use python :^)

[-] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 3 points 4 hours ago

I always find it funny when python and R get used in serious computational and engineering projects, and you hear the defence of “well data structure X and algorithm Y are written in efficient C++”. Yeah but why would you write it in a language that makes your program impractical the second you make a loop or a recursive call?

My work had a mandatory UNPAID staff meeting for front of hiuse today and apparently the manager was a dick to the person who called that out as bullshit. I agree that its bullshit and so does the labor code. No one else in front of house backed her up, fucking chickenshits. So looks like I get to make the report if no one else will. Theyre all gonna be paid for it, im too important for them to threaten and it wouldnt be a great look if they cut my hours cause I wasnt willing to go along with a crime. Im pretty sure I can just tell my chef about it and he'd handle it. The FOH manager was recently promoted when our previous one left for medical reasons and doesn't necessarily know the rules. My chef is a dumbass, but he is very good in regards to this kind of thing. If I get asked if I can grab stuff we didnt get sent by a supplier at the grocery store in my way in since I walk past, I text him when I leave home and he adjusts my hours to that time. Everyone in the kitchen gets 2 days off in a row always and he is pretty decent at securing the goods raise wise. If I have to bring it further I will. I have friends who are on the labor board. You gotta pay workers to work, some people's entire job is meetings and they make way more than us, so you can't then say it isnt workz and if it isnt work it isnt mandatory.

Been in a band for 10 years, and in the middle of March I hit my burnout point and walked out of a practice to just go home. This started a domino effect that lead to 2 of the 4 of us quitting, and we haven't gotten together since that night.

I don't listen to the kind of music we play anymore. I don't feel connected. I don't want to play shows. The last tour we did sucked shit and lead to me relapsing when I got home.

However, we do have stuff booked here and there, and I'm not gonna leave anyone hanging on that front. This Monday, we're all getting together to run a set, figure out transport for a few gigs this week, and just talk about the future. Have to tell the other person left "hey, I don't wanna do anything in May either." It's gonna suck and I've already caused a lot of disappointment, but I gotta put my well being first, and I've wanted a break for a long long time, but never had the courage to say anything about it.

That's kinda the thing about me, and something I focus on a lot in therapy - I keep stuff locked in, hide stuff from people, even lie sometimes to keep peace. I hate it when people are mad at me, worried about me, disappointed in me, pretty much anything negative directed at me. I don't handle it well, and it scares me to death.

Really not looking forwards to this week.

I just discovered Laufey and I’m an immediate fan. She sounds like depression-era singers and I’m a complete sucker for that sound.

Funny thing is that I’m pretty sure I’ve heard her refer to it as “50’s style” when that sound was very popular in the 40’s lol

Edit: actually I think she sounds a lot like Karen Carpenter

Banana Ball season is in full swing, don't forget to tune in to Texas Tailgaters vs Savannah Bananas in Kenan Stadium at University of North Carolina! It is a fast-paced game of collegiate / minor league baseball with a lot of silliness a la Harlem Globetrotters. If you are like me and don't care for MLB baseball, it is a very watchable ballgame and worth checking out at least once for the spectacle. Should be tossing out the first pitch in 10 minutes at 7pm Eastern/ 4pm Pacific.
