if a 50yr old jet fighter managed to evade Russian/Chinese air defenses, completed its mission and returned safely home, you would never hear the end of it from NATO fanboys.
I wonder if other countries have (or will have) their one genre of trashy books like in the USA where some outdated piece of military equipment magically gets transported to a future, technologically advanced, battlefield and saves the day?
the monkey's paw curls it's one of those Boston Dynamics robot dogs they're always kicking over and it defeats the Sasquatches because it's immune to their main move.
I bet they went to their top ace and told him. One last mission. And he just smirked.
The movie Iron Eagle, but the Dio song in the big dogfight scene is played in Phrygian mode instead of Mixolydian

Like two of you nerds will get this, and I just want you to know that I love you both
I was always tickled by that movie as a kid because of a teenager flying a fighter jet.
Just remember: Iron Eagle has something that no other war movie in history has ever had -- not even Apocalypse Now or Full Metal Jacket: Lou Gossett Junior twerking to James Brown
Siiiick, reminds me of the manga area 88 about mercenaries in the middle east using old jets and doing maneuvers like dumb bombs or gun kills.
That game rocks on SNES.
Was it released as U.N. Squadron?
Yep, that's the one.
The manga is pretty cool too! Sadly only the first couple of volumes got translated. There's an anime ova too.
That's cool, how's the story? I never got much from the game besides us fighting some terrorists or something. But it's one of my favorite Shmups that I'll play occasionally or listen to the OST.
It's about mercs in a fictional west asian country who fight in the war to repay debts they owe. They get cash for flying missions, it follows a Japanese pilot. I didn't get very far because I shelved it for berserk to finish that up.
Oh it gets much more fucked up than that. The pilot it follows, Shin, his story is that his friend got him drunk and tricked him into signing the merc contract, his buddy did this to try to get him killed/out of the way so he could effectively try to steal his girlfirend. The plan run into a small snag, Shin just happens to be really good at being a fighter pilot. And so it follows him trying to make enough money to buyout the contract so he can escape and go back to life, except...
spoiler
Shin after getting out finds that he spent so long effectively fighting for his life and survival that he ends up going back to being a merc because he just can't adapt back to civilian life.
Ahh, ok, so it's similar to the game in how you make money off missions to buy new airplanes or deck yourself out.
