[-] lemonhead2@lemmy.world 31 points 10 hours ago

oh lol. stopped watching the video when he said to protect yourself when browsing sign out of chrome

how about using a non spyware browser instead? e. g. Firefox

[-] Quacksalber@sh.itjust.works 55 points 14 hours ago

Step 1) Don't use YouTube('s own client)

[-] MissesAutumnRains@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 12 hours ago

I mean, this video is targeting people who are still entangled with Google. If you aren't, there isn't much point in watching it, right?

[-] tirateimas@lemmy.pt 14 points 12 hours ago

If all the good content is still there, people will stay there. Open and ethical platforms need to have content to become an alternative. I hope this content is hosted on PeerTube and other platforms as well.

[-] Auli@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 hours ago

They need to solve paying creators and also what happens when if they get big. How do they scale. Hate YouTube all you want it costs a lot of money to run it and I don't see federated service replacing it. Also the fact everything us still up there I see that being hard in federation.

[-] voxel@feddit.uk 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

I don't think it needs to be solved, they motivate people to support through other means and have a dedicated support button. Sponsorships are also a thing.

Regarding scaling, as the name implies, PeerTube makes use of Peer-to-Peer technology to reduce the load of platforms and it's federated without an "official" instance, which allows content creators to spread across different instances, spreading the load it comes with.

Oh for sure. I hope he and others double post to better platforms so they can catch up as well.

Step 2) Get a proper email where you aren’t the product.

[-] Switorik@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 hours ago

I know this question pops up a thousand times but what email do you suggest? I'm trying proton right now.

[-] voxel@feddit.uk 1 points 5 hours ago

Stick to Proton if you like it.

Tuta.con

If you like, get your very own domain as well, and make infinite aliases.

[-] Switorik@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago

I'll give it a go.

Do you have any suggestions on a maps app that is compatible with android auto or is android auto another can of worms?

[-] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 1 points 7 hours ago

Never needed to mess around with that, so I don’t have any advice.

As far as maps in general are concerned, I’m currently experimenting with OSM based maps. If you’re on iOS, you can easily get away from google by using apple maps. Not gonna get away from big tech that way, but still…

Step 3: Stop using android unless it's Graphene or something like it that's de-googled. Because a lot of Google's tracking is done through the play store.

[-] haroldfinch@feddit.nl 4 points 13 hours ago

Fair point.

Although it does have the biggest exposure to Google addicts.

[-] olivier@lemmy.ml 1 points 12 hours ago

Any alternative client recommandations?

[-] kwarg@mander.xyz 6 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

My personal recommendation that has been working for me (although there are other options that for some people might be better)

NewPipe for videos

Metrolist for music and podcasts

[-] olivier@lemmy.ml 2 points 12 hours ago

Thanks, will give them a try!

[-] frischkaesbagett@feddit.org 2 points 11 hours ago

I am so happy for you finding newpipe now! Awesome client.

[-] TheRiskiestBiscuit@reddthat.com 3 points 8 hours ago

A digital panopticon.

[-] osanna@lemmy.vg 6 points 11 hours ago

The only thing I use is yt from that list, but I don’t use their client

[-] weaselsrippedmyflesh@piefed.social 4 points 10 hours ago

Wish we weren't stuck with YT, but Peertube and others are not nearly anp viable option yet. Hurray for other clients, though.
