Terrified you would be found out and killed.
If they realized it, they might have just wheeled it back out and set it aflame. That'd be pretty bad.
They wouldn't even need to wheel it back out. Could have just started building a bonfire base around it and talking loudly about sacrificing it to the gods then pick off the men as they scramble out one by one.
On a suicide mission, 95% chance of failure, 4% you succeed and quickly die.1% all goes to plan. If they were giggling it was nerves.

They were certainly giggling. That giggling that you do when you understand what you're doing is completely insane, yet you continue doing it.
The giant horse was a symbol of Trojan, so it makes sense that the symbol of the english is a giant rabbit.
