Image is of Yemen seizing the first ship in its blockade of Israel (the Galaxy Leader) with a helicopter raid.

Alternate title: What If It Was The Bab El-Womandeb And It Was Just For The Ladies?

Ansarallah is a key component of the broader Resistance movement, backed by Iran, and has been a stalwart member in engineering the ongoing collapse of Zionism. It has steadily escalated both its rhetoric and, rarely nowadays, its actions, proving that the mythical "red line" might actually exist in the world after all, after going MIA in both Russia and China. It has been striking first Israel-owned ships heading through the Bab el-Mandeb - the strait that leads into the Red Sea and then to the Suez Canal - and, recently, has demonstrated its promise that any ships that intend to dock in Israel will be attacked. While this is really only half a blockade, the cost of going around Africa is significant, and Western insurance companies really don't like it when their ships get blasted by missiles and drones. Several shipping companies have already stated their intention to alter/stop shipping routes through the Red Sea, trying to prompt the West to find a "solution".

Despite US naval presence in the area, Yemen possesses the ability to strike the oil refining facilities of the Gulf monarchies, leaving the US in a very difficult position. If they attack Yemen, then not only do Western ships risk being attacked directly, but those oil refineries may go up in smoke depending on if they help the West - and global oil prices will skyrocket, in an already declining world economy - and it might cost several Western leaders their leadership positions, including Biden himself. A regional war could ultimately tumble into worldwide chaos.

Equally, however, the US cannot afford to lose Israel. It is the single most important American imperial outpost, perhaps alongside Taiwan. If Zionism is destroyed as a local destabilizing influence, then the Russia-China-Iran axis will find itself in a leadership position over the region. Israeli military losses in Gaza increase every single day as they advance further into the labyrinth death trap under the obligation to show some kind of military victory, with Hamas' strategy of attrition taking its toll. And Hezbollah sits there, having destroyed most of the border infrastructure, silently threatening the obliteration of Israel's infrastructure under the rain of a hundred thousand missiles.

As world attention gradually shifts away from the Gaza genocide, we continue to approach the brink.

Mark Regev, a senior adviser to Israel's prime minister, told the BBC he does not "believe that nowhere is safe".

"We've designated safer zones for people to go to," he said.

"If you believe the Hamas propaganda, we're just hitting innocent buildings, right? But if we're hitting a structure, it's because there's Hamas either in or under the structure."

Kindly move to the less lethal zones

crab-party crab-party Japan set to export Patriots to the US as stopgap crab-party crab-party

spoilerJapan is expected this week to formalize a change in policy that will enable it to export several dozen Patriot missiles to the United States, a move that would backfill Washington’s stockpiles. That would give Washington flexibility to send more of the sophisticated air defenses to Ukraine, which is in desperate need as Kyiv gears up for punishing Russian airstrikes this winter.

The change — a modification in defense export rules — will not explicitly mention the Patriot system but will meet a key request by the Biden administration, said U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing talks. Japan manufactures missiles for the Patriot, the U.S. military’s premier air defense system, under license from Raytheon.

After Milei's decree: Argentine companies will be able to pay their employees with milk or meat instead of cash (spanish only)

Chancellor Diana Mondino confirmed that employers and workers will be able to agree contracts in any type of currency, including bitcoins, kilos of steer or liters of milk.

The government of Argentina announced a series of economic deregulation measures that will come into force as from this week, among which is the possibility of agreeing contracts in any type of currency, including foodstuffs such as beef or milk.

The information was provided by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, Diana Mondino, who announced on Twitter that "we ratify and confirm that in Argentina it will be possible to agree contracts in Bitcoin and also any other crypto and/or species such as kilos of steer or liters of milk".

In addition, the Chancellor referred to article 766 of the Argentine Civil and Commercial Code, reformed by decree of President Javier Milei, which details that "the obligation of the debtor is to deliver the corresponding amount of the designated currency, whether the currency is legal tender in the Republic or not."

It should be noted that this is not the first time that Argentina has had to resort to barter: already during the economic crisis of 2001, during the government of Fernando de la Rúa, the exchange of goods and services without money became popular in the trans-Andean country.

Statements on the inclusion of cryptocurrencies and other species in financial obligations under Section 766 raise interesting challenges. The incorporation of these assets into financial legislation is a topic of global debate, and their impact on the economy and transactions requires careful consideration.

Your (very short) Saturday Briefing:

96% of Saudis think that Arab nations should cut ties with Israel, and 40% of Saudis have a positive view of Hamas, compared to 10% months before the conflict began. Not that democratic sentiment means much in a monarchy, but worth loosely keeping an eye on.

The Sudanese Armed Forces have had a pretty serious defeat lately, after a couple months of relatively little movement (though even this "little movement" puts all the territorial losses and gains in the Ukraine War since June to shame; such is non-attrition war). The opposing Rapid Support forces have seized Wad Madani and some other major towns/cities in Jezira State, which is much more agricultural and populated than the western desert regions that the RSF has had their strongholds in before. This was a pretty surprising defeat for the SAR, especially due to the seeming lack of attempt to conduct any defensive urban warfare, and it's been a real kick up the ass for the pro-SAR population and politicians and leading to a lot of arguments and controversy about the military and what the fuck it's even doing. Given that hundreds of thousands of people had fled from other attacked areas to Jezeira State due to its assumed safety, this is very much not good for the civilian populace either, who are now fleeing again. You can compare the current map on NATOpedia to how the battlefield was just two months ago. Meanwhile, the SAF is accusing the UAE of supporting the RSF (they are), and some Democrats in the US Congress are calling on the UAE to end its support for the RSF.

Japan's defense spending is increasing by over 16% next year, up to a record $56 billion, and is loosening arms export controls, including being able to sell Patriot missiles that it manufactures to the US, whose stockpiles are dwindling. You know what they say, if your air defense missiles don't work on hypersonic missiles and they don't really work on drone swarms, the two major threats to your current military hegemony, just make even more of them and confidently state that this is Fine And Good, Actually, instead of trying a different strategy!

Podoliak, senior aide to Zelensky, has said that Ukrainian men of fighting age who fled the conflict should be forced to return, and that restrictions should be put in place to limit their access to aid and services in their places of stay in order to pressure them to return to Ukraine.

Milei's reforms

Javier Milei, President of Argentina, will announce this evening on national radio and TV several reforms that will be implemented by Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU).

Page 12, an Argentine newspaper, contains a series of reforms that Milei intends to put into this decree, such as:

  • Labor reform (declaring an emergency in the sector);
  • Eliminating the Rent Law;
  • Eliminating the Supply Law

Some electoral reforms will also be included, such as:

  • Elimination of the Simultaneous and Compulsory Open Primaries (PASO);

Another F-35 oopsie, this time a whole-ass panel fell off one in flight

spoilerCAMP FOSTER, Okinawa – An advanced stealth fighter that returned to its base on Okinawa missing a panel this week may have lost the part over the ocean, according to an Air Force spokesman.

The F-35A Lightning II, assigned to the 356th Fighter Squadron, landed at Kadena Air Base at 10:24 a.m. Monday, Okinawa Times reported the following day.

The aircraft was missing a hexagonal side panel measuring 18 by 12 inches and weighing approximately two pounds, according to an email Tuesday from 18th Wing spokesman 1st Lt. Robert Dabbs. The panel is located below the cockpit, on the right side of the aircraft.

“Expectations are the panel departed the aircraft over water,” Dabbs said. “We have not received reports of damage or injuries.”

Naked Capitalism: US, Allies Opening New Front in Middle East With Escalation Against Houthis Over Shipping Lanes

There's discussion about to what extent the US can respond to Ansarallah's attacks. Speculation is that the fleet present around Yemen right now can fire 400-800 anti-missile/drone missiles - that is, if Yemen has about a thousand missiles+drones or more, the fleet is fucked unless they can resupply (and that isn't trivial; they'd have to return to port and everything, and you can't just leave your aircraft carrier in the sea while your destroyers are away resupplying). Probably explains why they're bringing a third aircraft carrier group over.

It seems to me that the impact of the blockade is largely symbolic. That's not to say it isn't having a sizable impact on the Israeli economy - it definitely is - but the route all the way around Africa doesn't make the route some arduous trek, and if Israel requires a certain commodity then they can certainly get it. The bigger factor here is that the global hegemon is unable to defend its shipping routes despite having two - soon, three - aircraft carriers in the region, as well as a number of regional allies. Given how much of the financial economy is speculation (read: vibes based), bad vibes can actually have an impact.

Truthfully, I think there's too many unknowns to be able to predict with any great accuracy what would happen beyond that it would be a gigantic and expensive (materially, in terms of missiles used) pain in the ass for the United States even if none of their ships are sunk, and who knows how far Ansarallah will truly go. I don't doubt their beliefs and militant statements per se, I've just been made very cynical over the last couple years about thr concepts of verbally given red lines which are unceremoniously stepped over by the West; I'm definitely a believer in the saying "Don't make promises you can't keep."

Of course, Yemen has already done their fair share compared to most other countries on the planet, so I would be a lot less angry with them not really trying to start a war against the US (and they still very well might!) compared to watching Russia do essentially nothing as Biden clumsily drove his golf cart over 20 red lines in a row. Hearing "Don't send X weapon to Ukraine!" from Russia should basically be interpreted as a masochist saying "Oh no, it would be a real shame if you whipped me for the 45th time! Don't do it!" Again, not saying that Russia should have started bombarding Poland or whatever, just that they should have shut the fuck up if their threats have nothing behind them. Compare this to Hezbollah, who has responded tit-for-tat with Israeli strikes into Lebanon, AND haven't constantly fucking bleated about red fucking lines every time. The threat is implicit, they don't have to say it!

Anyway, on to the first part of the article:

... So we have the spectacle of the US, a supposed naval power, unable to protect critical sea lanes. Can’t have that, now can we?

Mind you, it is not clear what good a convoy, which looks to be the immediate response, will do in the face of drone and ballistic missile attacks. Yes, it will put more defensive firepower in the theater. But the number of missiles and difficulty of resupply means there is a possibility, even a pretty good one that the Houthis can simply exhaust the firepower that can be delivered via the Operation Prosperity Guardian warships.

And that’s before getting to logistics issues, that to a degree, maybe a big degree, various vessels have particular launch platforms, so missiles are not very fungible across ships. So this the convoy could wind up being a high cost temporizing measure. Would the West try to move to a Plan B before it became hopelessly evident that it was outmatched by the proverbial guys in sandals, now with the force levelers of drones and ballistic missiles? Of course, events in the from of damage to convoy ships could overtake events.

So what might next steps be, if the big bad Western forces fail to trounce the Houthis quickly? Maybe the Biden Administration works up the nerve to tell Israel no more weapons for you if you don’t cut it out in Gaza. You can be sure the hawks will call for strikes on Iran to make them rein in the Houthis (when I doubt Iran has operational control) and/or a ground attack on Yemen. I consider the latter to be nuts. We saw from the Gulf Wars it took months to pre-position men and weapons, and that was when we had a better army. And by all accounts, the Houthis would be as hard as the Afghanis to defeat, between their native tenacity, their very decentralized structure, and the defense-friendly terrain.

Israel's lawyer is a great way to describe the US. "Your honor, my client Israel, is not actively committing genocide nor ethnic cleansing. Proportionality is..."

The UNSC resolution just passed was for all intents and purposes drafted by the US. Nevertheless US still couldn't bring itself to vote in favour and abstained. As Aaron David Miller put it, "Israel's lawyer". And people look to these fanatics to broker Middle East peace?

The James Webb Space Telescope has snapped a glowing new portrait of Uranus that showcases the ice giant’s typically hidden rings, moons, weather and atmosphere — features that were nowhere to be seen in the planet’s first close-up more than three decades ago.

Humanity’s first good look at Uranus came when Voyager 2 flew by the seventh planet from the sun in 1986. Through the spacecraft’s camera, which viewed the solar system in visible light, Uranus appeared to be a bright blue world.
