Rent-seeking will go everywhere it possibly can. That's why it's so insidious and must be stopped. Our whole mess of a world will hopefully come to a head before it gets too bad, most likely, but yeah if they could Monsanto, Zoetis, and co. would have us re-upping on pet nasal sprays if we dare desire to interact with them.

this isn't just DRM they put in code that would make the train fail on purpose based on position in one case and date in another

Anything that has DRM should be vandalized. Make it more expensive to pick the DRM option that gets vandalized over the non-DRM option that no one fucks with.

I wonder if it would just go too far at some point. I already gave up on streaming services because there's just too many of them and I don't want to watch like 90% of the content on any of them, I'm not subscribing to a service to watch one or two shows. The inconvenience of the system has outweighed what I actually get out of it. I've heard quite a few people doing similar things as well.

I'm guessing this is why they're moving onto businesses. I can stop watching Netflix, A freight company can't afford to have all their trains bricked. It's gunboat diplomacy, or gunboat economics I guess. I expect it will become openly more blatant until we end up having companies with their own private armies to ensure their DRM is "protected" and can't be messed with. Not sure if it'll be more cyberpunk or East India company style though.
