WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected appeals from three Republican U.S. House members who challenged fines for not wearing face coverings on the House floor in 2021.

The justices did not comment on leaving in place $500 fines issued in May 2021 to U.S. Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Ralph Norman of South Carolina.

THESE MOTHER FUCKERS TOOK A $500 FINE TO SUPREME COURT?!

[-] foggy@lemmy.world 59 points 8 months ago

Can we sue them for wasting resources or something?

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 19 points 8 months ago

You can sue anyone for anything, you just need to be in congress to have your frivolous case dismissed by the SC instead of a low level judge.

[-] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago

Is that code for starting a fire?

[-] ramble81@lemm.ee 17 points 8 months ago

Which begs the question, can you appeal anything to the Supreme Court? And either way, how did it get that far that an appellate court didn’t stay the lower courts ruling? How does that work?

[-] Patches@sh.itjust.works 3 points 8 months ago

You can appeal any judgement. It is up to the higher courts to decide to hear your case. Which they often do not.

[-] ramble81@lemm.ee 3 points 8 months ago

So at a minimum an appellate and district court actually bothered to hear this case?

[-] hansl@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

And disagreed on the judgment

[-] hansl@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

You could if the appeal and the court disagree, at every level of the justice system.

[-] pete_the_cat@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago

And it took nearly 3 years for a ruling...

Throw tantrum against dress code designed to fight an active pandemic.

Fly off the handle and have an emergency vote when a senator wears a hoodie to work.

Yep.

Different chambers, but that's basically it. These people are stuck in the 19th century.

[-] shani66@ani.social 5 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

It's all self aggrandizing bullshit. Pretty much the entire system is designed around making very unimportant people feel important. And i mean that all the way down to the local courts.

[-] stoly@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

You've just hit the button, that is precisely why the US was created. There wasn't some British threat, taxation wasn't higher, and citizens of the colonies had more representation in Parliament than people living in the UK. In short, it was all a lot of propaganda that we still spout today and what people really wanted was to be greedy and have all the power themselves.

Why is it that I, a nonviolent person, feels like punching someone in the face each time I see a photo of MTG?

[-] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 14 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

She has one of the most punchable faces of all time. And a voice to match

Narcissism. She knows half the population loves the catty, bitchy Jerry Spriger show antics, and she loves the attention.

[-] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

You could power a small city by putting her face on one side of a lever and Matt Gaetz's on the other side, and converting motion to electricity.

Putting aside all the obvious palm-greasing and grift, U.S. Representatives gross $174,000 annually: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/12/26/2023-28661/adjustments-of-certain-rates-of-pay

Remember come election season that these people are wasting the government’s time with this frivolous appeal, trying to make a statement, over a sum of money that amounts to less than 0.3% of their nominal annual salary.

[-] stoly@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

I guarantee that, aside from any court filing costs, no money changed hands. There are plenty of angry political hacks that have law degrees who would take this on for free just to own the libs.

[-] Wytch@lemmy.zip 18 points 8 months ago

Great, now charge them interest and processing.

[-] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 18 points 8 months ago

In her defense, MTG always looks like she's wearing a mask. Curious to know whose face she's wearing like Dwight Shrute in that one episode of The Office....

[-] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 5 points 8 months ago

How do these people all look so evil and folks actually think they look decent/civil. She radiates evil to the point you could show me a double-blind cross-section of pols and I could almost certainly tell who's on the right haha

[-] AncientFutureNow@lemmy.world 13 points 8 months ago

Surprising any actual common sense rulings come from this SC.

[-] hansl@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago

Come on. That’s way beneath the Supreme Court. This is something that shouldn’t even have made it to them.

It’s like Batman trying to save all the kitties in trees.

Well what do you know, my Riker reserve has been topped up!

[-] profdc9@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

As much as I would have loved to hear their arguments in front of the Court, it's a waste of even this Court's time.
