Argh that was so frustrating-- His story seemed so tailored to help you specifically with that problem, and I felt so clever for trudging across the map to get him for that situation... It felt like a prank when he's just like "oh great idea but no because reasons."

the fact that we still remember these characters is such a testament to the writing of NV, it's straight up the fellowship of the ring to the post-postapocalypse genre

Ah man new vegas really was great. How many companions through how many games were as memorable as NVs? Its been an awfully long time, should replay it.
New Vegas had a bit of a modding Renaissance, it's in the absolute golden age of modding. Incredible stuff being done with it.
There's one or two female super mutants in New Vegas, so you might be thinking of them.
Technically, there are no sex organs in supermutants. They can identify as male or female but genetically they are neither and none of them are capable of producing offspring. Instead, they capture humans and expose them to the FEV to turn them into Supermutants.
Super Mutants lose whatever gender organs or genetics when the FEV turns them into what they are. They can still identify, though.

Yeah it's not selfless to enter a situation in which one person (you) will absolutely 110% die, when there's someone right next to you who is 100% immune to the very thing that will kill you.
In fact, I would say that anyone in that situation who wouldn't immediately let everyone know "hey I'll be perfectly fine doing this, so stand back I got this" is kind of a piece of shit.

They fixed it in the Tale of Two Wastelands megamod though, amongst many other things.
ToTW with DLC is the only good way to replay 3 and a damn fine way of replaying NV too if you ask me. Even if you don't!
Edit: oops, seems it was Broken Steel that fixed that part. I stand by the rest, though.
TTW is GOATed. There are tons of mods that make it a far better experience now, too.
FO3 must have been in the first wave of "game devs have children now, so every AAA game is about father-son relationships". I wasn't sick of the trope yet, and actually got really into the story FO3 wanted to tell. I played it close to release, did the self sacrifice at the end, and generally hold that experience in high regard.
Then I loaded an earlier save and tried asking the robot to do it. I belive I had a mister handy follower, been a while, but of course it also refuses with some silly rationale. Bethesda games are both so immersive and yet full of these peeks backstage that constantly expose the artifice of it all (and the latent biases of their creators).
It didn't exactly ruin the magic of that first run, but it did make any subsequent plays feel very... toy boxy. I had kind of the same experience with Elden Ring and Skyrim, now that I'm thinking on it. That first playthrough is like watching LotR, then every other one is like smashing Gandalf and Orc action figures together (or playing any of the LotR games lol).
Since the DLC kinda requires you to be alive, they rewrote it so that Fawkes is just like "yeah that makes sense because I'm completely immune, sorry for not thinking of that sooner, lol"

Played through FO4 for the first time recently. It's so sterilized of any "edgy" content that it hardly feels like the same universe. Let alone butchering all dialogue and making the game even more linear. Your dialogue responses really don't seem to matter, at all.
We just gotta accept, that new Vegas was the peak, it ain't getting better. still better than 76 and the mobile game tho

Clearly should have been a moment for the player to decide. Having someone who is supposed to be a friend refuse to save you when it would be easy for them to do so is terrible writing.

That was by far my favorite part of FO3, because it's just so stupid. You get a companion who would literally be the best person for the job, and they go "That's gonna be a no from me dawg. It's your destiny to go kill yourself for the sake of the wasteland". What the fuck dude, do you want me to die?
I'm pretty sure the Broken Steel DLC added the option for Fawkes to actually go in the chamber, but then the game gets all pissy about you not killing yourself. To this day it makes no sense to me, but I've grown to accept that Fallout 3 (and by extensions all modern Bethesda titles) is filled with literary nonsense.
I think part of the game berating you for making the followers do it might be because Bethesda couldn't get Ron Perlman back into the studio to voice more endings for Broken Steel, so they reused the ending lines for making Lyons activate it (in which case it rightfully tells you off for selfishly sending her to die) and made different slides for the new endings with the followers.
Then they killed Lyons off screen anyways to turn the Brotherhood full fash, despite the Lyons definitively leading the Brotherhood to their greatest ever victory and their induction of Wastelanders giving them a loyalist core against exactly that...
But, no, apparently a couple of jackass Exiles were secretly more popular.
Like, don't get me wrong, perfectly natural development for them to go fash, just don't do Lyons like that.
The BoS should turn fash, it was one of the writing elements of Fallout 4 I actually enjoyed. The Brotherhood is entirely dull and uninteresting in 3, and their 4 rendition is the natural consequence of rapidly expanding a cult-like insular worship of technology and superiority messiah complex. 1, NV, and 4 had the only interesting forms of the Brotherhood.
I disagree that they were boring, but ironically enough they're mostly interesting precisely because Elder Lyons was going against the grain to make them the good guys (mostly). Especially when you talk about them in the context of an arc that does end with Maxson's coup.
I think they came across as boring because the player is somewhat groomed to look at them as the good guy faction, doing mostly good guy things in a situation that desperately needs someone like that, and we go "obviously this is the right thing to do" but, as you mentioned, the BoS shouldn't be those guys.
Which is kind of funny, because FO3 was designed to introduce a new generation of gamers to the Fallout world but you won't really understand why Elder Lyon's decisions are unpopular with some Brotherhood unless you've seen the before and after.
I also liked the parallel between Lyons and the Fallout 1 Elder. In Fallout 1 they aren't quite as fashy as an organization yet but even when faced with an opponent that is everything they are clearly sworn to fight against, actually doing their job is unpopular, going by the comments of the council and the rank and file in the base.
They just want to steal tech and live in bunkers, man, none of this "protecting humanity from the perils of mad science" business.
Your third paragraph is the big point I'm trying to get across, actually! 3 did a lot of reintroducing and playing against type, yet also boxed into a new corner, for many subjects. Super mutants are present for some reason, but are also completely different, as a quick example. It's familiar yet completely different, it's aesthetically in line with the classics even if every element is subverted, and I'm not as much of a fan of that. I think it's better to either stick with the classics for such a reintroduction, or move beyond them and imagine new classic factions, New Vegas only works well because it plays off 3 and 1/2 for a fanbase of both.
Also not a fan that you have to side with them unless you decide to commit genocide, but that's neither here nor there.
1 is probably my favorite portrayal, but I like how 4 subverts expectations and I like how NV takes the issues of 1 to logical conclusions.

Saying "that's not my job" is literally one of the most American things you can say. Do you think Musk or Bezos or Gates or Zuckerberg or Pichai would ever pick up a mop and bucket at their office? In North America, delegation to middle management, expanding the bureaucracy, is the name of the game. Only peons buy into the "gotta pick up the slack for my coworkers!" mentality.
Most of the time I encounter it, it's completely selfish bullshit. I'm the asshat that gets stuck doing everything that everyone else says "it's not my job" when it literally is. Just because people think cleaning up after themselves isn't their job doesn't mean it isn't.
I get if you're an office worker and somehow you're expected to clean a toilet or something, but if you use a printer or something and it runs out of paper, just get more fucking paper... The next person is just going to have to do it even though you were the one to empty it.
That is the exact logic that leads everyone to take advantage of you. It is a business not your home.
It's not that anyone knows I do it so they don't, it's that it needs to be done and no one does it so I do. I can't just let shit fester, it's just not in my nature. It's an ethics thing for me I think, it feels "wrong" to leave something undone that I know needs to be done.
