I switched to standing-only at work about 10 years ago and it's been great, except for a 2-year stretch where the cleaners in the building I worked in would somehow find a free desk chair and push it under my desk every. single. night. So every morning when I got to work there'd be an office chair sitting on my standing mat and I'd have to find somewhere to put it. I tried moving it far away, finding a chairless desk on the other side of the building, but somehow they kept finding me a chair I didn't want and rolling it onto my mat. Eventually I got a little guest stool and would pull that over onto my mat when I left, and that worked as a decoy chair and kept them from adding a chair. Maybe this comic was about them.

It's probably a dumb question but have you tried leaving them a note?

Sir this is Lemmy. We don't interact with people for trivialities.

[-] barsoap@lemm.ee 15 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Or just keeping the chair around. OP already said it: Guest chair. Actually you should have two for that purpose, it's also not wrong to sit down to have your coffee.

Pick your battles. Fighting with cleaning staff about this kind of stuff is like fighting with your grandma about whether or not you're still hungry. Yes, yes you are: Shut up, eat, and fast tomorrow.

[-] dexa_scantron@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago

This was years ago. And I did try a note! It didn't work.

[-] Vampiric_Luma@lemmy.ca 3 points 11 months ago

Janitor. Honestly it's weird they're moving anything at all, but notify the boss and they'll notify the contract holder who will whip them into shape.

Businesses spend a gross amount on janitors and it's a cut-throat business. If they don't want the contract that bad, someone else very much does. Nothing to lose but your sanity. ;P

Worth keeping in mind if it happens in the future and notes don't work.

Afaik standing for long periods is also bad for your health. Frequently switching is where it's at

[-] Maco1969@lemmy.world 54 points 11 months ago

We are kind of unique in our ability to sit on chairs, the majority of animals throughout evolutionary history have some form of tail. Imagine we meet aliens and every species is incapable of sitting on a chair, it'd make start trek look a little foolish.

Of course the furries have thought of this…

[-] chatokun@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 11 months ago

Everyone acts like furries are just a fetish group, when they're really futurologists preparing for first cintact.

[-] outer_spec@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 11 months ago

You say this like futurologists aren’t already kinky as hell

[-] Naz@sh.itjust.works 19 points 11 months ago

We can sit on chairs but slouching on stuff is way more comfortable.

Source: Dated a human girl, everything got in the way. After two weeks we found a pose that finally worked in terms of seating/cuddle compatibility.

;3

[-] outer_spec@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 11 months ago

hey op. who’s “we”?????

[-] 4am@lemm.ee 12 points 11 months ago

We’re also the only ones who can throw with such accuracy that we made sports with it.

I saw a post that said something like “imagine aliens show up and their minds are fucking blown by throwing and catching”

[-] Novman@feddit.it 4 points 11 months ago

Cats sit on chair everyday

You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.

I'd like a desk that would walk with me.

This is what I like about smartphones. I can just use it while walking around the room. Or at least while spinning on one of those rotating chairs.

As a matter of fact, I am walking around in the kitchen as I am typing this.

[-] NABDad@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago

I have a treadmill desk at work.

[-] wolfpack86@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

Make sure your chair has good casters

[-] nifty@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Vision Pro and simulated keyboard?

[-] Cheskaz@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I have back issues that make sitting and standing still for any length of period very painful. If I had the money to get a Vision Pro, I would genuinely consider moving from Android to Apple.

The thing I don't understand is why it's more popular to have motorized desks that go up and down instead of just having fixed desks at standing height and taller chairs.

[-] Fal@yiffit.net 30 points 11 months ago

Sitting on a chair that you can't put your feet on the ground is extremely uncomfortable. Even if they have a bar to put them on at the base, it's still a very awkward position

[-] Cqrd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 11 months ago

I can tell the person who asked this is short, short people seem to be used to this and don't feel uncomfortable like that. At least, according to my wife. I always feel very uncomfortable if my feet can't be on the ground.

[-] azertyfun@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Probably helps that their legs are wayy lighter though. Square-cube law strikes again.

I actually like sitting up high, but I just tried sitting on my desk and I reflexively tensed my thigh muscles to keep my legs slightly raised. Otherwise the dead weight of my legs pulls me forward against the edge of the desk, which is uncomfortable. Maybe a short person can chime in with their own experience lol

[-] Liz@midwest.social 2 points 11 months ago

I worked at a standing desk with a tall chair that had a bar for your feet. I found it was downright perfect. But, every solution will have the lovers and the haters.

[-] Chadus_Maximus@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago

Wait, you're not supposed to put your feet on the chair?

[-] 4am@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago

You ever fall off a barstool at a Chili’s when you’re gonna go piss because you forgot that the high tops where the only tables available?

I don’t wanna bring that embarrassment to the office.

[-] technohacker@programming.dev 6 points 11 months ago

Well the taller chairs would be a problem with the higher center of gravity I imagine

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Because of people like me who are much taller than the average person and would have a hard time using a set position desk that's made for people between 5'4'' and 5'9''. It's also bad ergonomics to sit so high your feet don't reach the ground.

I miss the electric standing desk at my old job. It also came with this skateboard thing to balance on that was pretty nice.

[-] THE_MORTAL@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 11 months ago

I misread "I miss the electric chair and was confused"

[-] TheFriar@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago
[-] AgentGrimstone@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

A balance board, it was just a curved board. Same idea but easier to use.

[-] outer_spec@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 11 months ago

if i could walk while sitting I would

[-] FakeGreekGirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 11 months ago

Isn't that why office chairs have wheels?

[-] RealJoL@feddit.de 5 points 11 months ago

[-] vikingqueef@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

standing an kneeling are so much better for the torso, back and hips than sitting in a tradchair

[-] volvoxvsmarla@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago

I swear my toddler is growing up to be Jim, she just plays standing all day. Hardly ever sits on the floor and the whole table-chair-concept is being ignored. Whenever she's eating it seems like she belongs next to a food truck.

[-] mmagod@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

a pneumatic table is definitely one of my must-haves this year.. just so darn expensive

[-] CryptidBestiary@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Sometimes you get tired of sitting in a chair all day. Especially if you don't work from home

[-] Maco1969@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

It's not really sitting though is it...
