Can we get the Israel flag to come up when we type 'genocide'?

[-] otp@sh.itjust.works 38 points 5 months ago

Well, the genocide flag does seem to get suggested when typing "Israel"!

People pretending east Jerusalem does not exist now? Illegal settlements are still illegal ...

Honestly either flag makes sense given the divide. Which state is Kansas city in?

[-] isles@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

As far as I'm concerned, the Kansas side might as well not exist! (There is no subtext, I really don't like Kansas)

Out of all the occupying Israel is doing, I find that of former East Jerusalem most harmless. To my understanding, the Palestinians there are entitled to Israeli citizenship, there is no apartheid system like in the remaining West Bank, there is no blockade like in Gaza. If Gaza or the remaining West Bank were ruled like former East Jerusalem, I would find Israel a lot easier to defend.

Which side has the better tax benefits?

Would be nice if software in general would just stop suggesting things altogether and let the user decide what they want to say / do.

[Types X]

"Did you mean Y?"

Did I ducking type "Y"? No. I typed X.

Granted, this case seems more like the emoji metadata being mislabeled.

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 18 points 5 months ago

Why? The suggestion bar doesn’t obstruct typing or reading, it expedites access to spell check and emojis, and if you really hate it, you can disable it.

[-] ptz@dubvee.org -4 points 5 months ago

You're focusing too narrowly. Suggestions in general. Software needs to get out of people's way.

[-] Zorque@kbin.social 6 points 5 months ago

As another commenter has suggested, you can get it out of your way if you take the time and energy to do so. It just requires that you put in effort rather than have it handed to you on a silver platter.

[-] ptz@dubvee.org -1 points 5 months ago

I'm not talking about iphones specically. I meant software in general.

Which often have settings if you look for them.

Are you shouldn't have Grandpa Simpson yelling at a cloud as your profile pic? Admiral Patrick sn't anywhere near as much a curmudgeon.

[-] Dontsendfeetpics@lemm.ee 16 points 5 months ago

Well thankfully there’s both settings to turn those features off and settings to customize your own text replacement built right into the OS. So yeah, the users can indeed decide what they want to say/do.

[-] Zorque@kbin.social 22 points 5 months ago

Yeah, but when the default isn't tailored specifically to me and no one else, it's clearly bad design.

Now I wonder if "Duck Duck Go" was originally going to be named something else 😆

It'll be nice when actual history is respected instead of stories made up by death cultists and corporations.

[-] tobogganablaze@lemmus.org 7 points 5 months ago

So which flag do you think should come up? The Ottoman's?

[-] db2@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

Frankly at this point nobody should get it. If children can't learn to play nicely with their things you take them away.

[-] Rediphile@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 months ago

Who gets to be the parents in this situation?

[-] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 10 points 5 months ago

I’m sure this will be a nice thread with civil conversations

Newsworthy info, thx!

Thats not a bug that's a feature.

[-] autotldr@lemmings.world 3 points 5 months ago

This is the best summary I could come up with:

On Tuesday, the company addressed the bug with the latest beta software release of iOS 17.5, just a few days after it said it was working on a fix.

Apple’s previous update was introduced on March 21, but the recent discovery of the bug upset some users on social media.

In one April 9 post on X viewed more than 2.3 million times, an iPhone user questioned whether Apple was aware of the error – and whether it was intentional.

But the user, who said she was Jewish, provided a long list of other cities that don’t surface a flag when entered into the emoji search box.

In 2017, the US administration of President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, reversing decades of American foreign policy.

So suggesting a Palestinian flag emoji for the search query “Jerusalem,” particularly when Israel is at war with Hamas, added tensions amid a long-running dispute.
