I had a mask on in the grocery store yesterday and got some weird looks. Like people I'm not afraid of getting sick...

I AM sick

This is for you, you morons

A full century after the Spanish Influenza and we still got to witness how so many imbeciles remain untouched by education and empathy.
What a dismayingly timeless old comic.

History never repeats itself...but it often rhymes.

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago

i hate this quote. it just doesn't change anything. "history repeats itself" means the exact same thing. it's not like people mean that the exact same people do the exact same things in the exact same circumstances... it's just meaningless distinction without difference.

[-] Klear@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

If the quote at least itself rhymed, then you could call it an improvement, but no...

[-] greedytacothief@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I just assume it's a George Lucas reference.

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

it's a much older quote, often misattributed to Mark Twain, possibly because he has another quote about history not repeating. but it isn't this. this is possibly a humorous remark of some sort, but it's not that funny or clever imo. the main problem is that for it to work you need to completely misunderstand the saying "history repeats itself" to mean some sort of Battlestar Galactica's "all of this has happened before..." type mystical statement, which it isn't.

[-] greedytacothief@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I'm not sure if this is satire or not, but I was making a rif of the "It's like poetry, it rhymes." Meme

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I've only got a single comment about wearing a mask in public. Somebody cattily asking "why are you wearing a mask?" to which I replied "How about you mind your own business?" Did not go any further than that.

Because I have stupid little bitch-ass immune system, I'm ridiculously susceptible to being sick, which I don't enjoy. So I'm either 1 germ away from being sick, or I'm already sick.

[-] qjkxbmwvz@startrek.website 15 points 2 years ago

One of the nice things about post-pandemic life where I am is the normalization of wearing masks if you're sick, vulnerable, or just feel like it. Someone shows up at work

or on public transportation

with a mask and no one bats an eye.

(I'm in the USA in a very blue, VHCOL area, YMMV...)

[-] SharkEatingBreakfast@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 years ago

It's nice! I don't like my health situation being outed, so I'm glad that it's now less acceptable to ask.

Unfortunately, I'm in a very red area. My last boss kept exasperatedly telling me that I "don't have to wear a mask while I'm at work"β€” which gave me more of a reason to wear a mask at work. Turns out, I was right. None of them were vaccinated, and my boss ended up having a heart attack which forced him to permanently close down the shop. Oh well.

[-] Xanthrax@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

I got that a few times, and I ignored them, and then they all continued to make loud insults to themselves.

[-] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 years ago

Holy shit, based

Hey, you're taking over Picard's job :)

One thing I've been surprised about with Everett's comics after buying a collection is how many I have sympathy for, or connect with - considering it's over 100 years old (and I'm not particularly a fan of violence as a response to anything).

[-] Taleya@aussie.zone 11 points 2 years ago

Everett true is my goddamn idol

Evenhanded in handing out the beatings

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 years ago

Yikes. Fuck that artist in the ear.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 4 points 2 years ago

In fairness, it predates Tintin in the Congo by about 20-30 years, and that's far worse.

Everett True is practically Wokey McWokeface in comparison.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

I missed a family member's wedding because of covid. A few days later I saw a guy at the store not wearing a mask and I kind of went ballistic on him. I'm not proud to admit that I vented a lot of my frustration over the whole management of the pandemic on that guy. I was fully ready to fist fight over it. In the end, he decided he did not want to fight me, despite being twice my size and half my age. I made him go stand in the corner of the store until I finished my transaction and left the store.

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
