I remember when Michigan once ruled the great seas. Good times.

[-] Squorlple@lemmy.world 21 points 3 months ago

Alas, now they are but Great Lakes

[-] ramble81@lemm.ee 22 points 3 months ago

Should have done this as Spain and then you could have the other Toledo thrown in there.

Did you know that Ohio fries originated in Canada?

[-] evidences@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

I've lived in Ohio my entire life and never heard of Ohio fries, I guess we just call them fries here.

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago

And Hawaiin pizza

[-] kurotoshiro@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Nope, Ohio fries really come from Ohio (but not because of the name)

Damn. Calling the Ruhrpott new York is an insult in both directions

[-] nao@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago

Is Ruhrpott like greater Frankfurt?

Is it like Frankfurt am Mainhattan??

[-] killingspark@feddit.org 3 points 3 months ago

That would have made sense. Ruhrpott isn't in Hesse though. It's the region north to it around Düsseldorf Köln Bonn etc

If anyone is wondering, theses are the names of states of the USA. It's a small country that lies just south of Canada.

Tbh this is just wrong, it’s clear Ohio is larger than Canada even if you include their puppet state (Toronto).

Clearly if New York wanted instigate intrastate warfare they would conduct a lightning assault through Canada and catch Ohio by surprise, who would likely be thinking that their Appalachian Line on the border with New York would keep them safe. Canada’s so small they could cross it in hours!

[-] niktemadur@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

I'm gonna tell my kids this was Ohio

[-] s_s@lemm.ee 4 points 3 months ago

Pennsylvania = Amish = Swiss

[-] nickb333@fedia.io 4 points 3 months ago

In that case - I must be in the youper.

[-] Rolando@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

There is no Paris equivalent. The joke author couldn't even go there.

[-] figjam@midwest.social 5 points 3 months ago

Paris = Mansfield. Which all Parisienne should find as highly offensive

[-] lars@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 3 months ago

I once heard Billings, Montana referred to as the Paris of south-central Montana.

[-] figjam@midwest.social 3 points 3 months ago

There is a lake (Summersville) in west virgina with water so clear they call themselves the little Bahamas of the east. Despite being northwest of the actual Bahamas.

[-] lars@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 months ago

There’s a Virginia to the north of Virginia that calls itself West Virginia despite being to the north.

Lake sounds awesome but imma bring a compass.

[-] sudo@programming.dev 4 points 3 months ago

Clearly its Versailles (ver-sayls)

[-] nickb333@fedia.io 2 points 3 months ago

He could've tried New Paris or St. Paris.

[-] sudo@programming.dev 3 points 3 months ago

Netherlands should've been Quebec.
