Image is of China's ambassador to Afghanistan, Zhao Sheng, meeting Taliban Prime Minister Hasan Akhund in September 2023.

I know the Rambo title card is a hoax.

The COTW was chosen in the wake of the aborted sequel to the attempted assassination of Trump being performed by a guy who is VERY enthusiastic about Ukraine, to the point of trying to sneak Afghan soldiers into Ukraine by setting up a house in Pakistan to house them and then further transport them. He also apparently offered to send thousands of Afghan soldiers to Haiti to help them combat gang violence. Whomst among us doesn't have the numbers of thousands of Afghan soldiers on speed-dial. Do you reckon there's a group chat?

Anyway, while there is still no official recognition of the Taliban's government by any country, China has taken a different course than the late USSR and the US - forming economic in-roads, rather than trying their own invasion. This has been a big boon for the struggling country, with various mines and oil and agriculture deals helping keep things barely afloat. A total disintegration of the social fabric of Afghanistan is not in the interest of any of the powers that border it - China, Pakistan, and Iran, with Russia not too far away - so an interesting dynamic of helping-without-official-recognition has been established. I wonder who will be the first country to fully recognize them?

The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.

The Country of the Week is Afghanistan! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Israeli captives’ families do not want all-out war with Hezbollah

Al Jazeera is reporting from outside Israel because it has been banned by the Israeli government.

There has been an escalation clearly over the last week, and many in Israel are worried.

They are concerned that if an all-out war erupts with Hezbollah, it will drag other actors in from the region – from the entirety of the Middle East – and it will not lead whatsoever to a [Gaza] ceasefire deal that would see the release of the remaining 100 captives still held in Gaza.

In fact, family members of Israeli captives spoke to American media this morning, saying that they do not want a war.

Because they know if another war is opened, if Israel does involve itself with a full-scale war with Hezbollah on that border, the chances for a ceasefire deal will be zero.

Won't someone please think of the brands?!?!?!?

The New York Times finally identifies the real victims of the anti-immigrant pogroms:

Many advertisers have tried for years to avoid sharing space with content about polarizing politics, pandemics, hate speech or misinformation, for fear of damaging customer perception and risking public censure. That ads appeared anyway on YouTube ahead of falsehoods about Haitian migrants underscores the difficulty advertisers face in maintaining brand safety in an especially volatile election year.

. . .

Having an advertisement land next to misinformation can be financially damaging — the share of people who click on such ads is 46 percent lower than for ads that avoid being twinned with toxic content, according to Integral Ad Science, a company focusing on brand safety.

What Lula da Silva said when his microphone was cut off by the UN - Forum Magazine (Portuguese Only)

President Lula da Silva was talking about the UN Security Council when his microphone was cut off; he continued speaking nonetheless.

Article (Translated)

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had his microphone cut off at the end of his speech at the opening of the Summit of the Future, held in New York, United States. The event is a preparation for the general debate at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, which will take place next Tuesday (24).

Convened by UN Secretary General António Guterres, the Future Summit aims to discuss the future of humanity, addressing crucial issues such as climate change and the fight against poverty.

In one of the most striking moments of his speech, Lula strongly criticized the institutions of global governance, including the UN itself. He had just questioned the General Assembly and claimed that the UN Security Council has been losing legitimacy when his microphone was cut off.

“Most bodies lack the authority and means of implementation to enforce their decisions. The General Assembly has lost its vitality and the Economic and Social Council has been emptied. The legitimacy of the Security Council shrinks every time it applies double standards or omits itself in the face of atrocities,” the president had fired.

Soon after, the master of ceremonies thanked Lula for his speech, at which point the microphone was cut off. The president, however, continued speaking, even without the amplified audio.

“The Global South is not represented in a manner consistent with its current political, economic and demographic weight. The UN Charter makes no reference to promoting sustainable development. We need the courage and political will to change, creating the tomorrow we want today. The best legacy we can leave future generations is governance capable of responding effectively to the challenges that persist and those that will arise. Thank you very much,” Lula concluded.

The event organizers cut off Lula's microphone in order to follow protocol, which provides for a speech lasting a maximum of 5 minutes for each speaker. At that point, the Brazilian president was about to exceed this limit. Before the Brazilian president, the representatives of Sierra Leone and Yemen also had their microphones cut.

A subcommittee in the Copenhagen city government has passed a proposal to name a strip of land "Palestine Square". The new square, that was unnamed until now, is situated in the city's Nørrebro neighborhood and houses a skate park and several cafes.

The proposal was due to be voted on last October but was withdrawn because of the Al-Aqsa Flood. A conservative councillor voted against, calling the proposal "a terrible cause" so the proposal will be put up for a vote in the city council. It is likely to pass as the four left to centre parties who made the proposal controls a majority.

Copenhagen has had a, much larger "Israel" Square since 1968.

Morocco, a retreat for Israeli soldiers leaving Gaza: As "Israeli" war crimes in Gaza, the West Bank, and now Lebanon draw international censure, will Morocco continue offering a luxurious retreat for occupation soldiers, or will mounting public outrage and legal action force the kingdom to confront its controversial alliance with "Tel Aviv"? | The Cradle

Now, outside of Gaza, the cries of children and the echoes of shattered lives linger in "Israeli" soldier Moshe Avichzer’s mind. Blood splatters, refusing to fade, stain his occupational army uniform, and the dust of leveled neighborhoods clings to his skin.

The mission is complete: Gaza is left in ruins, its people without water, electricity, or hope. Now, the need to decompress calls for a new task.

But where does an "Israeli" soldier like Avichzer unwind after committing such atrocities? The answer is Morocco – Marrakesh, to be exact.

People shouldn't be to surprised by the sadism and violence of the zionist entity. They represent what the western imperialism always stood for. They just don't bother to hide it now because of fanatism and it's the last western colonial project in the world that the west will be able to implement if they fail in Palestine. The depraved behavior of their soldiers is typical of colonial imperialism as well.

Speculation on Yemeni and Iranian ballistic missile technology with regards to the new Palestine-2 missile, used in yesterday's strike on IsraelAfter looking at the footage released of the missile used by Ansar Allah/The Houthis to strike Israel yesterday, I have come to an unlikely conclusion: They and Iran have collaborated to create an extended range version of the two stage Iranian Fattah-1 hypersonic ballistic missile and re-entry vehicle, in combination with parts from the Iranian Kheibar Shekan ballistic missile and re-entry vehicle. A far fetched conclusion that I didn't believe at first given how new the Fattah-1 missile is and given statements from Iran, but one I view to be the most likely based on the size and shape of the missile, and statements from both sides.

According to Yemeni State Media, the Palestine-2 missile:

with a range of up to 2,150 km, operates on two-stage solid fuel, incorporates stealth technology, and can reach speeds of up to Mach 16. This makes it capable of evading the most advanced air defense systems, including the Iron Dome. The missile has a high maneuverability, enhancing its effectiveness in penetrating enemy air defenses.

This rules out all liquid fueled rockets. It also mandates a two stage design, along with a maneuverable warhead and depressed trajectory for stealth. The only place for a seperate stage, given that there are no visible separations or jettison points in the booster stage itself, is the warhead itself.

Experts in Western Media have claimed that the Palestine-2 is a variant of the Kheibar Shekan missile, a statement which is half right. The initial booster stage, along with the rear and front fins are likely from the Kheibar Shekan series of missiles.

However, the warhead of the Kheibar Shekan is different from the one pictured on the Palestine-2, in function. The Kheibar Shekan warhead/re entry vehicle does not have its own rocket stage, so it is not a two stage rocket system. Once it is jettisoned from the booster rocket, it can manoeuvre on its own to avoid interception, but it has no power of its own, meaning it only impacts the target at a speed of Mach 2-3. In appearance, only the fins are the same. By contrast, the Fattah-1 warhead contains its own rocket stage, something that would be required for the Palestine-2 to be a two staged rocket system. From a visual standpoint

Palestine-2 warhead:

Comparison between Fattah-1 and Kheibar Shekan:

Fattah-1 second stage motor:

As for the range, Iran has reported in the past that they would be able to extend the range of the Fattah-1 to 2000km. Could the Palestine-2 be the end result of such efforts? I'd guess so.

As for how the Fattah-1 works, I came across this white paper PDF by the "Missile Defence Advocacy alliance that explains how it functions. In short, is the Fattah-1 a true hypersonic weapon? My answer is that it is as close as you can yet using ballistic missile technology and without using a lift generating re-entry vehicle/hypersonic glide vehicle, which the successor Fattah-2 aims to do. Ultimately agility while in the terminal phase is limited by the four fins and limited thrust vectoring on the second stage, in short it can probably dodge a bit, but it can't do a full turn. Most of the maneuvering probably takes place before the final dive to the target. However, the additional rocket stage on the re-entry vehicle/warhead allows for manoeuvres and a trajectory that would not otherwise be possible with a ballistic missile, explained here.

This could explain the stealth capabilities of the missile, and why Israel detected it so late. The depressed trajectory, as well as relatively low altitude during the "pull up phase", means that ground radars cannot detect the initial launch and would lose track of the warhead during the pull up phase due to the earth's curvature. However, there will be a large heat signature due to the second rocket stage.

Israel’s Gallant: ‘We are at the start of a new phase in the war’

Israel’s defence minister declared the start of a “new phase” of the war on Gaza as Israel turns its focus toward the northern front against Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.

Yoav Gallant made no mention of the mysterious explosions of electronic devices in Lebanon. But he praised the work of Israel’s army and security agencies, saying “the results are very impressive”.

After months of war in Gaza, “the centre of gravity is shifting to the north by diverting resources and forces”, said Gallant. “We are at the start of a new phase in the war – it requires courage, determination and perseverance.”

So it was never about just Gaza or Hamas. It was always about Greater Pissrael

Pissriel was born of terrorism and Nazi ideology and still is today and wilk be forever. The US, EU, and it's lapdogs are all complicit and it's leaderships are Nazi terrorists run amock on the world. Einstien was right.

New Scam just dropped:

U.S. Navy Seal/Blackwater merc launches an international crowdfunding campaign for a coup in Venezuela, following open appeals to the U.S. government to raise the bounty on President Maduro and high-level officials.

They’re posting fake donation sums on the magnicide-for-hire crowdfund campaign site. They expect people to believe that individuals are making hundred thousand dollar donations. After Feb 2019, Guaido’s people spent Venezuela Aid Live money on cocaine and prostitution.

In response to online ridicule, mercenaries now claim: “We would like to point out that the amounts indicated in the system are not necessarily in US$ but in the donor's local currency. This is why there are multiple donations with such high figures.”

BRICS: Palestinian President Will Pariticpate in the Next Summit in Russia - Telesur English

Article

Putin promised that the next BRICS summit will include a session devoted primarily to Palestine.

The Palestinian ambassador in Moscow, Abdel Hafiz Nofal, reported on Friday that the president of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, will participate in the next BRICS summit, which will be held in the Russian city of Kazan, from 22 to 24 October.

Nofal highlighted the confidence of the Palestinian people in Moscow to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.

The Palestinian diplomat announced in late August that Abbas had received an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the BRICS summit.

They also condemned the constant bombing of civilian infrastructure, the killing of children, women and health personnel, as well as the lack of access to clean water, medicines and food.

Thanks to the cooperation of the BRICS, nations like Russia, China and Iran, subject to unilateral restrictive measures imposed by the West and the United States, have established strong links in trade, economy, security and other areas.

Russia took over the rotating presidency of the BRICS for 2024 on 1 January this year, a year that began with the admission of new members. According to media, Moscow has planned for this year more than 250 events in 11 regions, including the XIV BRICS Summit.

The group currently accounts for almost half of the world’s population, over 40 per cent of global crude oil production and about 25 per cent of world exports.

Listen, when it comes to Amerikkkan bullshit electoralism, you must choose the lesser evil. You have to be pragmatic! My utilitarian calculation says you should vote blue no matter who. maybe-later-kiddo

When it comes to nuclear brinkmanship, then doing diplomacy is literally Chamberlain 1938 and you have to make a principled stance even though the whole Earth might die in nuclear hellfire.
That's a price liberals are willing to pay. Negotiating with Putin is weak. You should never compromise, no matter how many Ukrainians are sent to the meat grinder, even if nuking the whole planet is a real possibility.

Yes, liberals are the adults in the room

Hungarian shell company behind exploding pagers used by Israel in Lebanon terror attack - The Cradle

Someone mentioned Motorola as a supplier of these types of pagers, but these AR-924 models are made by this exact company.

The AR-924 pagers used by Israel in a terror attack that left thousands of casualties in Lebanon on 17 September were manufactured by BAC Consulting KFT, a shell company based in the Hungarian capital of Budapest, according to a statement released by Gold Apollo, a Taiwanese firm that authorized the use of its brand on the pagers.

“According to the cooperation agreement, we authorize BAC to use our brand trademark for product sales in designated regions, but the design and manufacturing of the products are solely the responsibility of BAC,” the statement read.

Gold Apollo’s chair, Hsu Ching-Kuang, told journalists Wednesday that his firm inked the licensing agreement with BAC three years ago.

“The product was not ours. It was only that it had our brand on it,” the Taiwanese businessman told reporters. “We are a responsible company. This is very embarrassing.”

No kidding, bud.

BAC Consulting is registered with Cristiana Rosaria Bársony-Arcidiacono, listed as its owner and sole employee on the company website.

among-drip

The website, which was blocked behind a username and password on Wednesday morning, also claims she has served on the board of directors of the Earth Child Institute. However, the sustainability group does not list Bársony-Arcidiacono among its board members.

Interesting things happening in Bolivia wiphala (maybe decades in weeks)

From Red

A faction within Bolivia’s Indigenous movement has begun a siege on La Paz to call for President Luis Arce’s resignation. In response, Arce has claimed that Evo Morales is a launching a coup against the government.

A faction within the “Red Ponchos” Indigenous Federation representing the rural communities of the La Paz region is leading the campaign. They have launched roadblocks to paralyze all highways connected to the city of La Paz. They are calling for Luis Arce’s resignation over what they see as his failure to deal with inflation and fuel shortages.

On the eve of the mobilization, Luis Arce held a press conference alongside the country’s union leadership. He stated that these mobilizations are part of a plan by Evo Morales to launch a coup and impose himself as President.

This campaign of roadblocks is so far confined to the Department of La Paz. However, starting tomorrow, Evo Morales himself will be leading a national, seven-day-long march from the town of Caracollo to the city of La Paz. He is calling for Arce’s resignation as part of the internal faction fight within the MAS party.

Simultaneously, Arce has moved the cabinet from La Paz to Santa Cruz. The government says it is to deal with the ongoing forest fires in that region better. However, some claim it is because the government is worried of being overwhelmed by the mobilization in the seat of government in La Paz.

There seem to be some protests in Israel, I suppose the liberals are angry that Bibi hasn't rescued the Israeli hostages or something. I think they're also angry that Bibi is using the support that this war and genocide have (with the Israeli public) as a smokescreen so that he won't be impeached or jailed for his corruption and other things.

I suppose there are also some small protests done by leftist, ultrareligious and other people that are anti-war and anti-IDF that are protesting the war, but I doubt these are more than 100 people and will get no media attention.

Looking the leftist alliance is going to win Sri Lankan elections. The funnier part is that the current President (who wasn't even elected by the public) is not at second but third place; he was doing exactly what the IMF wanted, maybe not good for popularity.

https://results.elections.gov.lk/

Edit: Dissanayake won

Edit 2: I see business news coverage on how Dissanayake has no choice but to heed to IMF else face a currency crisis. The best choice is to partially default and get help from China (maybe India too) for most important imports. The claim is that Sri Lanka only has a few months of foreign exchange left. However, the foreign exchange has been draining because of debt payments and trying to maintain a fixed exchange rate. If the pressure is too high, he can just let the Rupee float more freely. Yea, this will bring some inflation but its better than the alternative that is IMF austerity.
