Image is of China's ambassador to Afghanistan, Zhao Sheng, meeting Taliban Prime Minister Hasan Akhund in September 2023.

I know the Rambo title card is a hoax.

The COTW was chosen in the wake of the aborted sequel to the attempted assassination of Trump being performed by a guy who is VERY enthusiastic about Ukraine, to the point of trying to sneak Afghan soldiers into Ukraine by setting up a house in Pakistan to house them and then further transport them. He also apparently offered to send thousands of Afghan soldiers to Haiti to help them combat gang violence. Whomst among us doesn't have the numbers of thousands of Afghan soldiers on speed-dial. Do you reckon there's a group chat?

Anyway, while there is still no official recognition of the Taliban's government by any country, China has taken a different course than the late USSR and the US - forming economic in-roads, rather than trying their own invasion. This has been a big boon for the struggling country, with various mines and oil and agriculture deals helping keep things barely afloat. A total disintegration of the social fabric of Afghanistan is not in the interest of any of the powers that border it - China, Pakistan, and Iran, with Russia not too far away - so an interesting dynamic of helping-without-official-recognition has been established. I wonder who will be the first country to fully recognize them?

The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.

The Country of the Week is Afghanistan! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.

For all it's worth, at least the would be trump killer got fed up and decided to take matters into his own hands. He got tired of nobody killing trump so he took it upon himself. He didn't just sit on his fucking ass all day complaining how trump is a threat to NATO, Ukraine, Taiwan and Democracy (TM) on r*ddit, finally, a lib got on the move for once.

he's a terrible shot and even worse at planning assassinations anyways.

US provincial governor of Kentucky signs an executive order banning conversion therapy for children. He cites his religion for the policy, saying that all children originate from the divine, and that the brutal practice hurts children and thus goes against his religion.

We can unfortunately assume this will only be a temporary victory as Kentucky is a huge red state and his election as a democrat was a fluke due to strong mobilization from labor unions against the previous governor in the 2019 election. Crossing my fingers that this might hurt the organisation of the christofascists enough to slow them down a bit but I'm not holding my breath.

Huge fires in the north of portugal (again). Haven't looked into this in a while but usually I see the huge, dry, eucaliptus plantations as the reason for the rapid spread of these fires, there's been a major increase in that because it's an export crop that portugal carved out a small niche for itself in the eu market.

Last week the defense minister (from a party that can't even get elected to parliament anymore outside of a coalition with the main center-right party), said something about Olivença being portuguese and Portugal not abdicating sovereignty over it, which is a small 11k people city on the frontier with spain that was supposed to be given back to portugal after the napoleonic wars (there was a treaty or something), but never was (I think this is a trueanon rule) and just kept being spanish. He was mostly mocked because no one really cares, and imagine being from Olivença and seeing your minimum wage reduced from 1k euros to 840 euros.

Ukraine is now losing ground in five different sections of the front line simultaneously. In Kursk, near Kupiansk, around Chasiv Yar, near Pokrovsk and near Vuhledar.

CNN Portugal (a disgusting rag that installed itself here a few years ago) guy almost hit by explosion during fires.

Also check these stats, 84% of forest area in portugal is privatized, community-held area is 13%, only 3% is owned by the state.

Closed: All Taco John’s Michigan locations shutter

Franchise owner Meritage Hospitality Group has closed all of its locations, including the Taco John’s in Wyoming, Hudsonville and Caledonia. Those three locations all opened in February of last year.

“We did make the difficult decision to close our Taco John’s restaurants. We appreciate our employees’ commitment and hard work as well as the community’s patronage as we have endeavored to make this concept a success,” a Meritage spokesperson said in a statement to News 8.

This is a pretty bizarre story of Russian billionaire stuff. Husband and wife dispute over a major Russian tech company merger which seems like a terrible deal, the worst deal folks, he doesn't want it to happen and comes to the office, there's an altercation with security and 9 people get shot. It's hard to tell what's going on here

RE: Federal interest rate cut.

Okay so the graph shows that a cut in interest rates precipitates a recession. While that's true, I think we're still in uncertain waters because the US economy is unlike it's ever been. The 8 years of near zero interest rates was unprecedented and shifted so much of the capital into assets rather than real production. So I don't know if the typical rules about borrowing and reinvestment will apply.

Do the high priests of the economy think a recession is coming? They're saying they don't think so, but they also could be lying. The rate hikes were intended to slow down inflation, which they largely did. But prices are still high compared to wages. What will people do with lower interest rates? Is it enough to boost general consumption? Or just enough for financial types to move money away from production and into financial instruments. I don't know.

perfect example of radlibs thinking they exist outside of time and space, on a perfect pedestal in the heavens from which they can judge all mankind.

She doesn't realize by doing this she isolates herself from any allies and furthers warmongering for no benefit. There's no strategic benefit for her putting out this statement. The NAFO freaks aren't going to hand one to her and give her any credit, and anti-imperialists now just see her as a squishy windvane.

A lot of rumours going around that the pager attack was indiscriminate and that it was 5000 pagers? Any confirmation of this anywhere that could be lib-friendly?

EDIT: Also if you have a phone, walkie talkie or pager it might be worth opening it up and giving it an inspection for anything that weighs 20grams that looks out of place. I assume it will likely be touching the battery as it requires heat as the trigger mechanism. The explosives used in these devices were 20grams of PETN.

EDITEDIT: Another thing I'm not understanding is how the trigger mechanism works actually. The temperature detonation point of PETN is 4230°C

EDITEDITEDIT: My guess is they are connected to the circuit. So there must be electronics added too. The energy needed for direct initiation by electric spark is 10-60 mJ.

EDIT4: Another question that needs answering is how the trigger was delivered to devices simultaneously. If the devices were triggered via the pager's own network transmissions then the pagers that are turned off would not have exploded, meaning there's tonnes of unexploded ones out there. However it might also have electronics added that are independent of this and pagers that were off may have also exploded. I suspect this is the most reliable explanation.

MEE - Houthi 'hypersonic' missile attack on Israel: What we know so far

Yemen’s Houthis on Sunday claimed a ballistic missile attack that hit the centre of Israel.

The attack by the long-range missile sparked a fire but did not cause any direct casualties, according to the Israeli army.

The Houthis, who control most of Yemen and the capital Sanaa, said the missile was a hypersonic one. The Israeli military denied it was hypersonic.

...

It is not clear how the Houthis may have developed or acquired the missiles.

Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday said his country had not sent hypersonic missiles to the Yemeni group.

“We don't have such missiles to provide to Yemen," Pezeshkian said in a televised speech. But Iran last year showcased what it described as the country’s first Iranian-made hypersonic ballistic missile named "Fattah".

...

Hamas welcomed Sunday’s attack, and said it considered it a “natural response to the Zionist entity’s aggression against our Palestinian people”. It added that Israel “will not enjoy security” until it ends the war on Gaza.

By the fucking way, does poland still ban abortion? I remembered their great euro party was elected to dump that law, but i'm checking it now and its still banned?

It does, fucking incredible:

On July 12, however, Tusk suffered what looks like an ominous defeat when a parliamentary vote to stop prosecuting people who assist with abortions failed — by a wafer-thin 218-to-215 margin — because of conservatives within his ruling coalition.

Coming to democrats near you, seppos
