Russia is “fully ready” for a conflict with NATO in the Arctic, the country's foreign minister warned.

"We see NATO stepping up drills related to possible crises in the Arctic," Sergey Lavrov said, according to Russian state media, in comments for a documentary series that were first reported Friday.

“Our country is fully ready to defend its interests militarily, politically and from the standpoint of defense technologies," he added.

His comments mark the latest round of saber-rattling by the Kremlin, which has repeatedly... threatened ... to ... unleash ... nuclear ... war on NATO and its allies in recent years.

The Arctic is the northernmost point on Earth and includes territory belonging to eight nations: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Canada, the United States, Iceland and Russia. All except Russia are NATO members.

tbf, that wasn't true before the current phase of the Russo-Ukrainian War.

For real, though, from a purely realpolitik perspective, what a fucking disaster this has been for Russia. Fuck them, though. And fuck them even harder than they're currently getting fucked, until they get the fuck out of Ukraine.

I think we should just keep fucking them until Putin is no longer in power.

Does anyone remember when Sadam Hussain ruled over a very advanced country with an army and such?

[-] slaacaa@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Yes, they could have easily been like Saudi Arabia is today

[-] EvilBit@lemmy.world 90 points 1 month ago

They weren’t even ready for a war at Kursk, which they had been warned of, against a country that was already busy getting attacked by Russia.

[-] foggy@lemmy.world 55 points 1 month ago

They weren't even ready to surprise Ukraine with a war. And they planned it.

[-] tired_n_bored@lemmy.world 69 points 1 month ago

They weren't even ready for the war they started themselves

[-] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 52 points 1 month ago

russia wasn't even ready for war when they invaded Ukraine.

[-] i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca 50 points 1 month ago

Sounds right, and I’m sure worried. They rolled through Kyiv in 3 days because they’re so prepared!

[-] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 31 points 1 month ago

Don't forget how perfectly adequately the troops were supplied. Real body armor, real semtex, real reactive armor, well maintained small arms, plenty of food and warm clothes.

I am terrified about the prospects of an artic war with such a well supplied army.

[-] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

and they sure have their navy on lockdown, no problems with ships randomly setting on fire or anything like that.

[-] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 10 points 1 month ago

Largest permanent submarine fleet in the world...

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

New submarines added all the time, even.

[-] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

Their joint venture with Ukraine is laying down new submarine hulls left and right!

Dont have to have much of these if the population is brainewashed and manipulated enough to die by the thousands for zero reasons.

See the west has a preset kill limit.

[-] CheeseNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Well you see Ivan, if send enough people to freeze to death in Arctic eventually heat from decomposing bodies will warm terrain.

[-] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 37 points 1 month ago

"We are ready with our malnourished troops, six tanks series of explosions three tanks, and 2 leaky ships and a submarine in dry dock explosion is heard no submarine in dry dock.

2014: second strongest army in the world

2022: second strongest army in Ukraine

2024: second strongest army in Russia

2026: eighth strongest army in the Arctic (between beluga whales and snow owls)

Russia, the second most powerful military force within Russian territory, is prepared to take on NATO, the largest military force in the history of the world, in a war in the arctic.

They're having a hard enough time "fighting NATO" in Ukraine...

And NATO haven't even turned up yet

[-] EndOfLine@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

After the rousing success of their military action in Ukraine which was predicted to be concluded in a matter of weeks, more than 2 and a half years ago, I don't see why they wouldn't be eager to fight multiple opponents on multiple fronts. How could that possibly go wrong for them?

To quote the kids on the playground: "You and what army?"

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 23 points 1 month ago

Keep in mind the challenges of fighting in the Arctic, for both men and machines. Even a top-tier military is going to struggle and Russia thinks they have a handle on it?!

[-] IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago

Russia is “fully ready” for a conflict with NATO in the Arctic, the country’s foreign minister warned.

Yeah? Nobody asked, silly country.

[-] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 month ago

They weren't even "fully ready" for Ukraine....

[-] PetteriPano@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Last time they tried to wage arctic warfare they lost more men to the cold than bullets and artillery.

Cosmoline, they have cosmoline for military lubrication.

[-] poo@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Russia is weak and pathetic

[-] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 2 points 1 month ago

yeah its like after completely failing in far milder conditions they are going to just excel in the artic. lol.

[-] AtomicHotSauce@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Holy shit, grab your popcorn. I'm not sure they're even ready for a runner in their pantyhose, let alone war on another front. What the fuck?

[-] Hegar@fedia.io 7 points 1 month ago

Perun on YouTube has a recent video looking at how the warming atmospheric and military climates are affecting the world's arctic powers. If anyone wants more detail than just 'lolrussia' (but also still some lolrussia).

[-] YeetPics@mander.xyz 6 points 1 month ago

Maybe finish your half-baked imperialistic land-grab before you go for dessert (the kind of dessert that leaves your army rotting in the fields)

[-] rustyfish@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

To quote my DM when I’m about to cause a near TPK: „You can certainly try.“

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

They are not even ready to defend their own country being invaded on foot...

[-] mvirts@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago
[-] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago

His comment, or the country as a whole?

Both are complete fucking jokes at this point.

[-] Magister@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Lol, even Canadian Army would be able to win this (I hope...)

What does NATO want in the Arctic? Its fucking cold there

[-] Archelon@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

https://geology.com/articles/arctic-oil-and-gas/

This makes the Arctic an incredibly rich area. It is about the same geographic size as the African Continent - about 6% of Earth's surface area - yet it holds an estimated 22 percent of Earth's oil and natural gas resource.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-021-01087-6

A more accessible Arctic will create new opportunities for shorter, potentially more economical, northern maritime trade routes imagined by global leaders for centuries.

Not to mention the strategic use of the Arctic, aka, the reason NORAD is a thing.

[-] el_bhm@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago

Oh, look, similar reasons Ukraine got attacked. Who is russia rescuing now? Is russian ice endangered?

[-] Jumi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

But still, I can't imagine fighting in an inhospitable and remote area like that would be worth the cost whatever the price is.
