Hello comrades and welcome to the fifth improvement megathread of September! bonfire

Only two more days until October, it's a good time to make some plans for the following month.

As usual, some discussion ideas:

  • Do you have any plans for October?
  • Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.
  • Do you have any goals or plans for next week?
  • Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
  • If you don't have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
  • Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

Good luck with your goals! unity

Self improving Hexbears is what the systems fears the most. That and organized citizens crossing over social/racial/Religious/cultural barriers to come together to defeat the vampires at the top in order create more equality and equable world

It's been my 11th week in a row working out for 1 hour or more at least 4 days a week, as well as my 10th week doing at least half an hour of French and German lessons every day. 3rd week in a row studying medical literature at least 2 hours a day Monday to Saturday.

My plan for October is to engage in party activities for an ongoing campaign, as well as try to consolidate my studying routine. In November, I will reduce workout time to 3 days per week, and not go much over an hour each day (currently I spend about 1.5 - 2 hours), so I can focus more on medical literature and improve fast on that front.

So far off drugs (except caffeine and some alcohol) for 3 months, psychologically stable (I think?). Will quit coffee starting in February, or sooner if I become unstable again before that.

Those are some powerful streaks, keep it up rat-salute-2

Have you tried to substitute coffee with green tea or yerba mate? Those also have caffeine but they are much healthier than coffee

Thank you for the advice! I have some green tea lying around at home somewhere, it's been literal years since I last had it lol. It's definitely time.

Trying to clean and reorganize my bedroom this week, it's been a mess for ages and I want to round up clothes I don't wear anymore and donate them and clean up my dresser and stop doing the doomer "move pile of clean laundry from a chair to the bed to the chair again at bedtime" thing I've been stuck in

Washed the bedding and did that already

Need to dust and vacuum and declutter still

Need to put up new lights and get replacement bulbs for a couple lamps

First post in one of these threads.

I left a Discord of friends I've had for around 15~ years because I got sick of endless discussion of anime, manga, and video games and people going silent any time anything real was being talked about. It's isolating, since I don't go out much, but has left me with a lot of extra time that I'm trying to make better use of.

I literally just started like 3 days ago, but I'm taking formal Mandarin Chinese lessons and a class on music theory. I've always wanted to speak Mandarin. Music is a relatively new interest of mine, but I frequently listen to music actively for hours at a time, not while multitasking. So I don't think it's another 'side quest' like other hobbies I've explored. I bought an electronic keyboard a few years ago I never really touched but I'm fiddling with it while I learn about music notation, keys, etc. kirby-jammin

Chinese tones and syllables are hard, but I'm just drilling as much as possible between work. I only got xué correct once and had to move my mouth awkwardly to do it. Hello Chinese is a nice little app that tells you if you're saying things correct or not, so I've been using that until we get partnered up with some people.

Picking out the key of a song is also difficult, especially when there's no obvious instrument like a bass guitar to hone in on. I'm pretty okay with rhythm, I think.

I've learned a lot in the past few days and am feeling much more curious and fulfilled than when I would spend late nights chatting in voice calls or whatever. Re-discovering who I want to be and what I am interested in doing.

Plan is continue with these two things for the next 3 months and not let other things get in the way so I can continue beyond that. Need to also add some exercise into my routine somewhere.

Thanks. Spent part of the day drilling consonants again. I saw you also stopped interacting with some long-time friends. Probably a different situation, but similar feelings. Just not interested in the same conversations and time spenders as I was 15 years ago, but no real ill will involved. Hopefully you're able to take advantage of that time too and keep the gamedev rolling.

Do you have any plans for October?

My big plan for October is to do a game jam. Something small and get my foot in the waters of game development with others or in some form of "community". I want to continue to expand my skills and abilities with Godot and game programming and I need to challenge myself to force myself to grow.

Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.

I let go of some friends who were really not doin' shit. Not in the "they are content with their lives and are keeping it lowkey" but more so "yo you have been the same dude since we graduated high school, I can't rock with you anymore because I have changed a lot and you have not. You're the exact type of dude I don't want in my life and yeah man I don't think we can really be homies like that anymore because I don't respect people who don't grow". It was an emotional complex realization and conversation.

Do you have any goals or plans for next week?

Find a job/job hunting

Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.

I actually lost my streak of programming everyday but I'm building it back today. Day 1 again, this time with feeling. I am not deterred though. Losing some momentum happens in all endeavors, the key is to not stop. Slow down sure, even go in reverse sometimes in life hits you like that, but don't stop.

Giga cut has been going well, this is the second one i’ve done so it’s a lot easier this time around, definitely feeeling more stomach hungry this time around the mental strength is there and i feel a lot more energetic this time around. I’ll continue the cut until the last week of october and then during october i’m also going to do a three week t-break from weed. Probably should’ve done the t break when i started the cut but that might have been too much change. Overall I’m feeling good about these and they’ll be a good setup for me to go into the next month. Keep at it proles

[-] Rojo27@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

Chugging along with my workout routine, so mainly just looking to keep it going.

For October I just want to see if I can lose some weight. Jumped up a bit after getting to where I wanted so I just want to take things a bit slower, but also build habits I can actually keep.

Chaotic week due to personal stuff, but I still walked a lot unintentionally, even increasing my average. I won’t go into detail, but it’s worth celebrating, which also means I have to host a party, which I’ve literally never done.

Self Improvement

259 readers
2 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
