phoenix-think Is this all just some type of elaborate ruse with all the splitting and legal cat fighting?

popcorn-time Hope someone makes a documentary of this. Why hasn't a -gate suffix been added since it's freeze-gamer drama?

Disco-gate? The Elysium-gate? We need a title to brand this you know.

I’ll end up buying whichever one the capitalists try to suppress

The Disco Elysium successor drama is the REAL sequel

Weird story. No news yet on what contract terms were broken, but supposedly a judge has already ruled that Tuulik cannot work on the game until April 2025. The millionaire who sued him says ZA/UM is not involved but their lawyers sent something to Tuulik. Said millionaire is also involved in two of the Disco successors, neither of which is Summer Eternal.

Very messy situation, but if the worst of it is that Tuulik can't officially work on the game for six months, that's not too bad?

I will simply play disco elysium again

SUMMER ETERNAL IS THE RIGHTFUL HEIR, ANYONE WHO DENIES THIS IS A CAPITALIST ROADER AND WILL FACE THE FIRING SQUAD

So I guess that confirms which one is the good DE studio lol

Jokes aside, it's really crazy how ZA/UM created something so truly 1 of 1. I feel so bad for everyone involved it all seems like a giant mess of IP law and interpersonal drama and all of that multiplied cause real money is on the table. All the while Amazon of all place is making a TV show or whatever of the game. Seems really bad, and one of those things that once it's over everyone will feel like they lost.

pretty sure the amazon show is dead

For the best

wouldn’t whichever project comes next from kurvitz be the true successor?

[-] Bureaucrat@hexbear.net 10 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Depends. He was responsible for a lot of the lore and world building and is definitely the figurehead, but people like Tuulik did a lot of the actual writing in the game as well. They talk about their contributions in the documentary about the whole scandal. One of these projects has the art director, I believe.

Kurvitz didn't do it alone so I'd personally go with whichever company has the most former employees that worked on the parts most relevant to you or that were generally the highest quality.

Which right now is Summer Eternal.

I understand that making a game requires a team of talented people & all that. But generally I feel like the most impactful narratives come from games where there is a singular passionate artist steering the whole thing. Some games like that are almost entirely a one man show like Undertale for example. Dark souls you only ever hear Miyazaki's name really. I don't really have overwhelming evidence off hand for my theory here it's just kinda a vibe. I'm sure one could whip up examples of splintering artists surpassing the previous project as counter examples

[-] Esoteir@hexbear.net 6 points 20 hours ago

dark souls was written by a team of people, and the counter example exists within the same franchise: dark souls 2 had the best narrative and miyazaki had barely anything to do with it shrug-outta-hecks

i’ve been owned i probably have the most hours out of the dark soulses in ds2 bc of sotfs

[-] TomBombadil@hexbear.net 6 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

The projects I'm interested in are summer eternal and the one Kurvitz is with which I believe is Red Info or something like that.

Of course if Any of these studios produce a game we'll see which is good. But those are the two that seem most likely to hold the torch so to speak

[-] darkmode@hexbear.net 6 points 21 hours ago

defo, there should have been another RPG of this type years ago already

[-] HiImThomasPynchon@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

Damn, leftist infighting just like real life.

[-] CredibleBattery@hexbear.net 32 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

you can't call it that, please stop calling it that, leftist-infighting would imply that any of these feuding studios besides Summer Eternal are actually leftists, they are not. calling it ''leftist-infighting'' is an actively hurtful narrative that muddies the truth; a bunch of big shot financiers wearing the skin of Disco Elysium are doing everything they can to smother out their communist competition before it even launches a single project

[-] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 5 points 20 hours ago

it's also just a tired joke. it was funny the first few times but it's every thread about it now lol

Mea culpa, I've only been awake for like 45 minutes and the thinking parts aren't warmed up yet
