When a critical mass of people lose the thrill of living, that's when it gets dangerous for the establishment and people start thinking of revolution.

This is why the oligraphs artificially created a middle class.

When does the thrill start

That's why you gotta always find new things that excite you. Perhaps try activities like writing poetry in reverse, robbing banks, or knitting tiny scarves for your pet mongoose.

We used to have a local band called "John Cougar Concentration Camp", and it's still one of my all-time favorite band names...

I think of it every time one of this turd's mid-life crisis jams come within earshot.

Why is this guy a "turd"?

[-] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Is this Bruce Springsteen now?

Oh yeah. He's the one that sang that Diddy about jack and Diane. In my mind they are from the same generation but that may not even be the case.

Yeah they're both in their early to mid 70s now. Both had music out in the '80s & '90s, and both embraced a blue collar vibe, albeit in different ways.

My favorite Mellencamp song is Authority Song

[-] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Oh shit I love that song. I might go through his hits and see if there are more I like. My parents didn't listen to that kind of music and by the mid to late 90s that style seemed old to my kid/preteen ears. I found one Springsteen song I liked over the years, The Ghost of Tom Joad, but never connected with the wider body of work.

Apropos of nothing my thoughts on Mellencamp were always perfectly encapsulated by The Hold Steady's lyric in Stevie Nix "...you remind me of Rod Stewart when he was young You've got passion and you think that you're sexy and all the punks think that you're dumb" but that's just because I was an obnoxious young punk once upon a time. Thanks for the recommendation.

Haha we were all obnoxious young punks at one time. Probably why I love Authority Song so much.

I'm glad you like the rec!
