I like this prediction too!

Incredible. We haven't changed much, have we?

[-] casmael@lemm.ee 15 points 2 years ago

So civilised

[-] jeena@jemmy.jeena.net 72 points 2 years ago

Cute, they thought that it would only grow in one dimension while in reality it did in two.

Why I prefer this prediction:

[-] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 50 points 2 years ago

How have I never seen this lol

[-] LordOfTheChia@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago
[-] Klear@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 years ago

...but it checks out, sir!

[-] Num10ck@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

if you include the Vision Pro then the viewport has gotten even bigger than this

[-] samus12345@lemmy.world 24 points 2 years ago

They couldn't predict that he wouldn't be around any more by 2012.

[-] Hoomod@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago

I guess people thought "the genius Steve Jobs" wouldn't go a homeopathic route to treat his actually treatable pancreatic cancer

It's so incredibly rare to have a treatable version of pancreatic cancer, normally it's a guaranteed death sentence.

Also he got a liver transplant because having access to a private plane meant he could be on all the lists. Only bought him like another year though.

The Iboard is just a touchscreen Mac.

[-] jol@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 years ago

Reality is disappointing.

[-] CeruleanRuin@lemmings.world 2 points 2 years ago

But it also shrank in a third.

[-] Exusia@lemmy.world 71 points 2 years ago

I like how at the time we hadn't even considered the entire slab would be a screen, like the memes still have the home button at the bottom. I get that it's a meme but still.

We also probably assumed the headphone jack would never go away either so.

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 14 points 2 years ago

It was my prediction. We've even got ones with a screen that wraps onto the side. A screen on the back side hasn't happened yet, though.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/09/xiaomis-crazy-new-2800-phone-has-display-on-the-front-sides-and-back/

But it's just dumb, so it hasn't caught on.

I hate phones with glass backsides, I've replaced the back of my S20 a dozen times before switching to a phone with a plastic back. Yes it looks nice (if you use it without a cover), but it breaks so easily. It's always super thin glass, not the thick gorilla glass like the front. If you look at it wrong it cracks.

[-] Fogle@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 years ago

Pixel 5 had a metal back coated with some resin thing. Best phone design in history.

[-] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.de 1 points 2 years ago

...Except the battery replacement is crazy difficult.

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 years ago

I mean it is kind of dumb, especially if it's as delicate as the front. I was young and I didn't really understand the manufacturing realities. I'm guessing phones will keep looking the same for the next bit, with a slim chance Apple's goggle thing will actually catch on a bit.

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Yeah we have. We even had a phone that had an e-paper display on one side for low power usage. Almost all the folding phones have a screen that is on the back when unfolded.

[-] Poob@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 years ago

You could argue that folding phones have screens on the back, just not the full thing, and not always the back

[-] ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 years ago

My zFold would like a word

[-] notatoad@lemmy.world 35 points 2 years ago

I’m not gonna do the math myself, but in terms of total screen size it’s probably pretty close to accurate.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

I can fit 24 rows of apps ON MY DICK!

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

The iPhone Pro Max is a big boy

[-] CeruleanRuin@lemmings.world 27 points 2 years ago

This is a really great illustration of how mere extrapolation can lead you to shitty conclusions.

[-] Synthead@lemmy.world 21 points 2 years ago

This is basically the slippery slope fallacy in a picture.

[-] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

Make it foldable and it's pretty much exactly what happened.

[-] aeronmelon@lemm.ee 18 points 2 years ago

The 10 didn't get that far, but the current biggest phone is not much smaller. Just wider instead of taller.

They just keep getting bigger...

Who remembers the lg chocolate or whatever it was called with like a 25:1 aspect ratio or whatever lol

[-] sebinspace@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I remember the LG Wing having an aspect ratio of fuck:you

Someone brought one into my shop to be fixed. Sorry, bud, no. Not touching that.

[-] FUCKRedditMods@lemm.ee 4 points 2 years ago
[-] sebinspace@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

Good god can you imagine 25:1? Fucken pencil-shaped display

[-] casmael@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

Okay how about this: Apple Pencil but it’s got a display on the side bang I just made Tim Apple another 6 billion dollars 💵
