I've put off mentioning it to anyone not to jinx myself but: I've been nicotine free for an entire month now! Dunno how long I can go, but anything is better than nothing and I'm actually trying hard this time 🤞

[-] kittin@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

If you made it a month then the physical effects are OVER and it’s purely mind game now.

When I quit, it helped to remember that cravings pass within one to three minutes. You white knuckle that long and it passes.

Also when you start noticing that cigarettes stink, you’re cured.

This is good to know, I feel like I've inadvertently lucked into doing this so far. Now I'll actually focus on it, thank you!

positivesGymrat shit has been going good

Down to my healthiest weight in a decade+

Noticing some real change around my tummy and face, and my legs are honestly looking pretty damn good and my hips are really getting defined. Feeling pretty good about that. Down about 11 pounds since 11/11.

Feel like I've gotten back to the maintenance phase where the muscle gains metabolic improvements take precedence and my activity level and diet make the fat loss easier now after the initial hard phase of "oh shit I haven't done this in years" getting back into the swing of things

negatives, self crit, alcoholism and nicotine addiction, mental health and relationshipsDespite feeling pretty good about myself physically, December 2024 was easily my worst month in a year mentally. Relapsed on alcohol and cigarettes, had several ugly arguments with my POS dad, lost my temper several times to the point of injuring myself raging at inanimate objects that were fucking with me like my shitty car's trunk and hurt my hand punching it because the trunk wouldn't latch and it doesn't hold open anymore and after a rough day that was the straw that broke the camel's back

Gonna try making it through 2025 without buying cigarettes or booze but it's been a struggle

Feeling really burned out and low and lonely and frustrated

Need a career instead of a job. Need a new car. Need irl friends and a partner and physical affection from human beings instead of cats. Need to be kinder to myself mentally and rest and eat better instead of impulsively wanting to make drastic changes overnight. I'm gonna commit to reconnecting with IRL ppl and finishing my degree and finding better work and getting to a point where I at least feel okay about how I'm doing personally vs my circumstances. 2025 might be the year I finally get my shit together to an acceptable degree. It's so much work and I started in such a low place and it's fucking exhausting but I've at least hit the point again where I can't not put in the work now without it bothering me more than putting it off, so I'm building better habits and making progress

Want to get back into practicing and making music too,.a creative writing/game mod project, build a new PC, learn how to ice skate and play pickup/rec league hockey and go snowboarding and hiking/mountain climbing again

I feel simultaneously incredibly bleak about the immediate future and state of the world and better about my own life and prospects than I have in more than a decade and it's a strange feeling

I may be a weird queer mess but my legs are very strong and I have some real "not one step back" ass willpower lately

You already started improving so you might as well finish

48 hours to join a gym and do a rowing machine set.

[-] kittin@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

FOLKS I DID IT

Well I did a rowing machine set. I inquired about a day pass to evaluate the gym and they let me in for a day for free.

[-] MoonElf@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

hell yeah way to go!

[-] Rojo27@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

More of the same this week. Didn't go to the gym. Worked out just a bit at home. Feeling all over the place in general, just waiting for the holidays to pass.

For 2024:

Ws:

-Finally found some consistency midway through the year up until more or less a week ago in so far as working out. Lost between 15-20lbs (6-9kg for all the metric system heads). Seeing some changes in my body as well, but still have a long way to go to hit my goal of being part of the swoletariateswole-doge

-Went on my first date in a years. It went well and I have memories from it that I'll hold onto forever.

-Had a few moments where I finally opened up about my emotions to my mom. Its something that I'm still working on, but I'm glad I was able to to the extent that I had.

Ls:

-Still struggling with social anxiety. I was hoping to advance my relationship with my crush after my first date and I can't help but feel like I've stalled. I'm also just still struggling with staying in touch with my old friends and even the ones that I have haven't inspired confidence in my ability to maintain friendships because they end up ghosting me when I suggest we hang out.

-Kind of piggybacking on that, I feel like I try way too hard to make up for my deficiencies in socializing by being a people pleaser, especially in the work place. I'll often work solo shift to give my crew an opportunity to have a social life and that comes from a sincere place, but I also do it so much that looking back I feel like I'm just burning myself out way too much.

Resolutions/Goals for 2025:

-Take better care of myself. I really need to go to a doctor for a general checkup because its been forever. I've also really dragged my feet on trying to get therapy. Also considering getting diagnosed for ADHD/autism to get a clearer picture of what I can do to better live with some of the things I feel.

-Continue to lock in at the gym and lose just a bit more weight.

-Grow my relationships and be consistent with it as well.

[-] MoonElf@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

looks like very steady progress, and even in your L's you're taking ownership and looking for the route to betterment. Nice job I hope 2025 continues to stack wins for you comrade!

[-] kittin@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

I love your progress

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

My 2024 was a mixed bag but it was still the best (least miserable?) year since 2018. I had some health issues which lasted for months but I still managed to make progress. I finished reading How Not to Die and massively improved my diet. I am now eating a whole-foods plant-based diet 90% of the time. I also did a lot of running, meditating and reading this year, more than previous years.

Some plans for 2025:

  • continue running regularly (at least 1x per week, preferably 2x)
  • run a 5k race
  • practice bodyweight exercises (at least 1x per week)
  • start doing some basic strength training with dumbbells

  • touch grass and hang out with friends regularly
  • continue reading regularly (at least one page every workday)
  • continue meditating regularly
  • practice guitar, drums and songwriting

I'm probably gonna add more stuff to this list but this is the basic outline. Hoping everybody has a good 2025! Let's make some progress solidarity

sounds like a good year with a lot of solid progress! Nice job! And I know you can hit these goals.

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

Thank you comrade soviet-heart

I have had a wonderful week and a fantastic year.

W's for the week: Helped the people close to me have a lovely christmas holiday. Mostly ate vegetarian. Went to physical therapy and got some basic exercises including squats. Switched from E patches to injections!! working towards monotherapy and no anti androgens.

L's for the week: Had alcohol and regretted it. Had meat that i probably could have avoided and feel guilty for that. freaked out on my girlfriend a couple times. Misgendered a friend at my poker game. Going to be working hard at all of these this week.

For the year my big wins are learning to love and accept myself. Becoming a woman. Losing 75lbs. Cutting my cholesterol in half and changing to a mostly whole foods diet and giving up most meat and dairy. I'm very, very happy with this year!!

In the next year i want to get my room finished, get some projects done, establish a solid workout routine and learn to make more vegan dishes especially with mushrooms.

For the next week specifically i need to clean my room and work on my server project and do my pt and not drink and not eat meat.

I love you comrades thank you for the support and encouragement!

[-] kittin@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

💪 whole food diet

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

Glad to hear you had a fantastic year soviet-heart

For vegan dishes, you can download the free PDFs of "How Not to Die" and "How Not to Diet" cookbooks from Anna's Archive.

Wishing you a great 2025 unity

  • Walked slightly more than half my goal.
  • Still hooked on that Mobile Game™ but it’s down to a couple hours/minutes per day instead of literally all day and night.
  • Ate real food maybe 4 days.
  • Got some new clothes.
  • Did a lot of laundry.

My W this year is I developed a friendship with my crush. My L is that it drives me crazy not daring to take it further.

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Be courageous! 2025 is the year to shoot your shot brace-cowboy

[-] blight@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah I know, but I was kinda thinking 2024 could be the year to let the shot be fired in, that way we can say “that was an entire year ago” if it doesn’t work out and gets awkward

[-] MoonElf@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

good job on the progress! What's your favorite new clothing?

Self Improvement

312 readers
60 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
