Okay this is gonna probably make absolutely zero sense, but I'm gonna try and explain:

(This might cause some brain damage and you might lose a few braincells from reading this)

For context, most of my family are US Citizens, we were all born in China.

My mom (and my dad, somewhat) is just so big on "Tough on crime", whenever there were alleged lootings during protests, my parents would be okay with them getting shot to death. Constantly blame "Democrats" for crime and the "migrant crisis". Also love their Wechat and constantly play (Chinese) nationalistic songs and other propaganda on the fucking speaker. Also, if you are dealing with severe depression, and temporarily can't work, they call you a "廢柴", basically the cantonese term equivalent of the term "useless eater".

My brother is into some crazy conspiracy theory that the Chinese Government is in a conspiracy to replace Han Chinese with, not only Chinese ethnic minorities, but African Migrants (like wtf dude), basically the equivalent of the "white replacement conspiracy theory" but in China instead (yea it sounds insane, doesn't it? Like... buddy, China doesn't even give permanent residency to foreigners, what the fuck is this insane conspiracy theory? Also, he's a US Citizen, why the fuck does he care?). Simultaneously, he opposes racism from white people in the US (... some crazy hypocrisy, isn't it? 🤨).

Tell me this isn't just me with the most insane family in the world.

I can confirm this is absolutely insane.

But sadly not the first time I heard about something like this.

Some of my friends told me on separate Occasions that their Parents ,they are 1st Generation Immigrants to Germany, support our far-right Party AFD. And are simultaneously angry with the racism they encounter.

Propaganda works.

[-] Pechente@feddit.org 19 points 1 week ago

Some of my friends told me on separate Occasions that their Parents ,they are 1st Generation Immigrants to Germany, support our far-right Party AFD.

Yep, I can confirm that. The most racist people in my wider circle of friends and colleagues are Polish and Hungarian immigrants themselves.

They are extremely religious too and I think the propaganda often builds on their beliefs.

[-] Zementid@feddit.nl 2 points 1 week ago

To spice things up, imagine them as Russian immigrants, completely immersed in the alt reality via direct Sattelite TV feed into their Living Rooms 24/7. There are people in Germany who are scared to death because despite living amongst us, believing the lies their TV tells them.

(E.g. Russo phobia in Germany, Gangs target Russians, Police helps or shit like that... Fox news but X10 turbo alpha beat down edition)

All I've got is, "Damn."

Wishing you the best.

My boyfriend and I were once snapped at during a family gathering because we dared to eat corn on the cob at a barbecue. The argument was something like, "A barbecue is only for meat, everything else is just greens, and the Greens (a german political party) want to ban our schnitzel!!!!1!1!" There's simply nothing else occupying these people's minds anymore—every topic, no matter how unrelated, somehow always gets dragged back to ThE gReEnS, CoViD vAcCiNaTiOnS, or whatever else.

When our health system breaks, those people are ripe with medical issues our system can't afford any more at that time.

If they willingly want to eat themselves to death by switching to ~~cheap shitty 2.50€ Aldi Hack Halb und Halb~~-protein only diet and avoiding vaccinations... and if a triage decision is needed, they will probably loose.

I don't want to imply anything, but a healthy lifestyle is the first row of defence against a short life in pain, especially considering our European future.

Edit(s): Lots... sry

I was gonna comment that this seems like basic ultra conservative nationalistic first generation Chinese American until you got to the Han replacement theory, which makes zero sense. I’m sorry this is really tough.

I’m happy for you that you have escape toxic Chinese and American nationalism. I’m sorry you have to deal with this.

My family can also be insane but dude, this is tough.

Edit: I want to add a comment that I frequently comment on Chinese culture and am sometimes taken the wrong way. I do not mean my first sentence in a rude or racist way. There is a weird trend of Chinese nationalism, and Chinese immigrants taking up pro China but extremely conservative positions that goes against minority rights while also being a minority in America. Chinese cultural is very conservative on its own but its blend with nationalism and political and social conservatives breeds wild ideologies in America.

My family is backwards, into ultra conservative religion and is deeply prejudiced in unconventional ways not (directly) racially. Meanwhile they are pro labor union to the extreme. My sister is all hardcore religious, and she is a deeply abusive and manipulative mach.

Religion has become my primary sign of insanity. Yesterday, the neighbor was beating his kid, so a few neighbors called the cops. When I told my fam, the guy was demon possessed and speaking in tongues. Like, dude drinks way too much some times, but how bat shit must someone be to diagnose a dimwitted drunk as demon possessed.

All I can say is peak leaded fuel happened in the 1980's. I'm from '84, so I'm not entirely free from doubt, but my parent's generation... They are generally everything that is wrong with the present, and everyone controlling the head of the dragon ATM.

[-] theangryseal@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Haha, demons. Good god, my hillbilly family loves to blame the poor old demons.

If you’re gay there's a demon in your peepee, rectal cancer there’s a demon in your butt. If you’re broke there must be demons in your wallet, If you’re hungry, there’s a demon in your gut. Tooth decay? You must have licked yourself a demon. Mental breakdown? Demons making you a nut! Every day we’re out here fighting all these demons, at night the sleep paralysis demons fight us!

Demons, demons, demons. Can’t get an erection? Must be a demon in your semen! Visit your local faith healin’, money stealin’, shandra maw hyba maw heep ahbba makoyata dahba sheenda tongue talkin’ preacher tuhday!

[-] FeloniousPunk@lemmy.today 13 points 1 week ago

Yeah man. Everybody’s family is insane on some level - some more than others. Lemme put it this way, there was a reason why I moved 3000 miles away from mine.

[-] kowcop@aussie.zone 12 points 1 week ago

Yeah, a family member of mine was in a cult lead by a person who had everyone believing they were a reincarnated sun god.. and there were invisible planets travelling through the solar system on a collision course with earth, and aliens.. aliens living under the ocean near Japan, and they were thinking of taking over the world in response to Fukushima.. I lost touch with her when she was grabbing shovels and heading to the hills to live in a region that had been calculated as ‘too far for the non-believers to make it following a tsunami’..

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 9 points 1 week ago

Like wow. My family is insane in their own way but the stories in this thread are twisted. Yikes.

Someone mentioned leaded fuel. Makes sense. My guess would be additional burnout, undiagnosed mental issues and lack of education. At least thats the only way I can imagine this world being the way it is.

The most cruel part is the amount of gaslighting they deal out. I was told my whole life (not even youth but until my thirties) that I‘m overreacting while believing scientists.

I suggest searching for and joining international groups of likeminded people. Its what keeps me sane in this turmoil. Of course lemmy sometimes helps too.

Happy new year to those who celebrate it.

[-] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 9 points 1 week ago

All the fucking time, I'm older and just have very little to do with them, comes a stage when you just don't want to excuse their shit anymore.

But I own my own house at the other end of the country, so there is that.

"Family" are people I share a philosophy with on how to treat other people, each other and treat the planet . I have little to nothing in common philosophically with people I shared some random genetic materail with.

[-] bizarroland@fedia.io 7 points 1 week ago

Yep. I grew up in a crazy family. I was going through it a week ago or so and it suddenly clicked in my head that on my mom's side of the family all of the women in the family are sociopaths.

There's some weird quirk about their genetics or upbringing that prevents them from being able to care about or empathize with the emotions of other people.

Just for a run-down, if you had ever met my grandmother she would have gleefully told you the hilarious story about how when she was 5 years old she attempted to kill her dad for not taking her into town and buying her ice cream. And I'm not saying like you know poison or something like she picked up a rifle and fired it at his head and only missed because her body was too small to control the recoil.

When he ran up and grabbed her and shook her and said do you know what they would have done to you if you would have killed me, she said "yes, they would have taken me into town and bought me ice cream because my dad had just died".

[-] bizarroland@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago

My sister, when we were little kids when she would get angry she would take her claws and grab my arm and rake them down my arm to leave massive bleeding welts. My grandmother took me a side one day and said, you are bigger than her, "why don't you do something about that", to which I responded, I do.

She did not understand so she asked me what it is that I am doing, to which I responded, "I cry".

To her that was hilarious. That was a funny story to tell people. That was the ramblings of a mad child who just does not get it.

To me, when I hurt somebody else and I see them cry it hurts me. So me looking my sister dead in the eye and crying and showing her the pain that I am feeling should have been a punishment for her actions, but I did not understand that the women in my family do not feel the feelings of other people and so to her that meant nothing, to my grandmother that meant nothing. To my mother that meant nothing.

The only thing that that meant to any of them was the potential annoyance of having to listen to a child cry.

[-] bizarroland@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago

The men that they raised, myself included, were raised up around sociopathic women as the default, and so they are never given the coping skills they need to treat women like normal human beings.

It takes 20 years of being separated from the family and surrounded by kind and loving women to fix that fundamental flaw.

For instance, my grandmother was afraid that my cousin was gay. Why she was afraid of that, I don't know. My aunt, his mother, was a diagnosed schizophrenic and crack addict lesbian, and I would not mention her sexuality if it weren't for the fact that my aunt's girlfriend / significant other hated men and used to physically assault him when he was a small child. She would squish his testicles as punishments for anything she could possibly think of, so the fact there is a possibility that the constant childhood physical and sexual emotional assault by other women might have caused him to have issues with women so my grandmother, in order to address that when my cousin was 13, convinced one of her co-workers to sleep with my 13-year-old cousin while my grandmother watched.

She thought this was a good and healthy thing to expose him to.

She would rather personally observe a 13-year-old boy being forced to fuck a 40-year-old woman against his will than to have the possibility exist that he grow up to be a sexually well-adjusted gay man.

I guess, in her eyes, it was bad enough that we already had a brownie in the family, throwing a gay into the mix was just way too much.

[-] bizarroland@fedia.io 3 points 1 week ago

My uncle has no children of his own because the woman he married cheated on him multiple times and got pregnant with multiple other men's children and he never divorced her he never walked away he just assumed and has lived his entire life accepting and expecting the women that he loves and care about to cheat on him with other men and to never give him a child.

My brother got away from the family by joining the military which gave him structure and joining the church which gave him support and encouragement and he married a pretty decent woman who unfortunately is not psychologically equipped to comprehend the machinations of a cabal of sociopathic women, so she has no idea why she doesn't like my mother or my sister and why she cannot get along with them.

So yeah, I understand what it means to grow up in a crazy family. Not a cult, not a bunch of racist although my grandmother and grandfather were so racist that since my mother had the audacity to marry outside of her race and have me, a native American brown child, they reduced it to microaggressions like my grandfather never allowed me to enter into the main floor of his house. He told my mom it was because he was afraid I would steal from him but he let my older brother and younger sister who were blonde haired and blue-eyed white kids wander around freely.

He once relayed the story about how he got invited to a KKK meeting and he thought they were a bunch of swell guys and possibly misunderstood, and him being a child who was born on millionaires row in New York in the 1930s, I looked up his address from the census at that time and the house that he grew up and doesn't exist anymore but the street that he grew up on the least expensive house available as of right now is 18 million dollars.

My mom has childhood memories of going to their house in New York and like the fucking Addams family having rooms where there were just filled with gold coins and jewelry and she would be allowed to take a piece home with her from time to time.

But, he was a greedy stingy bastard who wouldn't work to save his life. Mom has fond memories of Christmases being things like them getting cans of vegetables out of the pantry because my grandmother and my grandfather forgot to buy them Christmas gifts but they of course bought themselves Christmas gifts like mink stoles and new cars and fun vacations that they took without the kids, leaving them to fend for themselves.

[-] bizarroland@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago

My mother is racist also, but she's that like woke racist, the kind that believes that they're not racist but then also assumes that any time they have to work with people of color that the people of color are "ganging up on her" when there is a disagreement, so much so that she quits several good profitable nursing jobs where she was the boss of people of color because of her own mental conception that her subordinates were against her.

Now that I think about it there is a chance that they were against her once they all realized that she was racist, idk.

The kind of person who say they don't hate black people but won't vote for a black president. She thinks that because she dated and married and a native American and gave birth to a native American child that exempts her from racism just like trashy white girls do when they date black guys and thinks that gives them the n-word card.

Okay. Sorry for rambling so much just apparently I had a lot on my plate and it's a new year and it's time to leave the past in the past so thank you for perusing my trauma dump.

I hope your next year is as much better than the last year as it possibly can be.

And always remember, no matter how fucked up your family is, when you become an adult you have the right to leave them in the past where they belong.

[-] theangryseal@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Damn man.

That part about grandma getting the coworker was insane.

My grandma kept playboy magazines in the bathroom because “boys are gonna see it anyway. Might as well be here where they can ask about it.” And so they “wouldn’t be queer.”

She was nuts, but not that nuts I don’t think.

She shot a man in the back and got away with and I still think she had more marbles than your grandma haha.

In my family my sister is an antivaxer, so my niece is unvaccinated and has been through some sicknesses - from my perspective unnecessarily. Good that she didn't get anything langlasting (yet).

[-] Boozilla@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

Unfortunately I think most people have family or at least friends like this here in the post-truth world.

I think what depresses me the most is that once the MAGA leopards start eating all of our faces, they will still do the mental gymnastics to blame all of the MAGA-induced suffering on "liberals". Even though the Democrats have basically zero power (and are right of center) they will still blame "the left" when a gallon of milk costs $18 and is full of dangerous bacteria.

[-] scottmeme@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

Most of my family is just bat shit insane

[-] ElPussyKangaroo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I have no advice. I just hope you and your kitty find peace and calm soon. 🥲

Oh you recognize my username lol. I think my cat is fine, like she doesn't attack anyone, there's no reason she'd get hurt (hopefully). My parents actually like the cat, I wish I got the same love as my cat gets 🥲

[-] Wytch@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

Given what a shit state the world is in and seemingly headed for worse, I'd wager you're far from alone in having family that believes in absolute rubbish.

[-] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

It's kinda amazing how people are just so casually racist among people who they have more in common with than not, but skin color means so much more.

My mom was like that. Despite "having black friends" and all that rot, towards the end of her life after I moved out and left her homeless, she was so racist against POC. Like I distinctly remember the day my wife and I had stopped my and taken her to lunch out of pity, and we discussed her situation. At one point, when asked why she wasn't willing to try to get into public housing instead of living in a tent city, she told me she "didn't want to be a light in the dark."

If, unlike me at the time, you're baffled by what that means, she was saying she didn't want to live around black people. Despite having had black friends as roommates within the previous handful of years. I still played dumb and made her spell it out for me in crayon, because man is it fun to make 'not racist' people explain their racism in no uncertain terms and make them squirm as they try to dance around it.

[-] _cnt0@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

They say insanity runs in the family. But it more like takes a stroll and takes its time to really get to know each one individually.

[-] veganpizza69@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Welcome to dangerous bullshit awareness. Strap in and start reading, it's going to get worse.

Naomi Klein has a bunch of nice contemporary books to start to get a grasp on it. I don't of a book that's specific to your case, but I hope that you'll understand that you're case is not that specific.
