This is honestly the first time I've seen pretty much anything about it.

Nope, I haven't seen a single news article about it. Guess our propaganda machine is better than we thought it was.

[-] sp3tr4l@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

Seems like it hasn't been this bad since when Bush launched Iraq war 2... basically every major city in the US and Europe had huge protests, and it got almost exactly 0 coverage outside of local news covering your local city.

Now all the local news in the US are just Sinclair subsidiaries/franchises.

[-] jason@discuss.online 1 points 4 weeks ago

I don't think it's the propaganda machine (or maybe this is), but in the US, almost nothing is reported from other countries. If 100,000 people died in some wild natural disaster outside the US, we would get almost no real details, but we would get the full life story of the one American that was killed who was from New Jersey. It's just the way our media is. No real information. Just dumb sap stories.

It's the same reason the Republicans haven't been able to identify when they're ingesting blatant Russian propaganda. They've never seen or heard it before outside of their favorite American talking head.

Meanwhile in the rest of the world the news was flooded with information surrounding Trump. It’s a weird time we live in.

[-] danc4498@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It wasn’t showing up on Lemmy either.

[-] Carnelian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I’m seeing it on lemmy right now

[-] danc4498@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Did you see it on Inauguration Day?

[-] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I didn’t see shit about this on Inauguration Day

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Scary part is that the protests within America were not covered, or were barely mentioned.

The 20th was Trump's inauguration + MLK, so a LOT of people marched across the US. That said, most of the coverage is from small local papers and broadcasters. The big new orgs shied away.

[-] chilicheeselies@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

The revolution will NOT be televised

[-] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 1 points 4 weeks ago

What the hell, I had no idea. I heard nothing.

Now everyone will hear something.

[-] Glide@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Saving this one for the next time I'm hit with the "the whole world thinks we're a joke with [democrat] in charge. This is why Trump is great. The world respects us with him leading."

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 0 points 1 month ago

I'll be honest: The world thinks y'all are a joke no matter who's in charge, though Trump is a worse joke.

[-] Chefdano3@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

When Clinton was president, we were a sex joke. When Bush jr. was president, we were a funny joke. When Obama was president, we were a meme. When Trump was president, we were a sad joke. When Biden was president we were a dad joke. With trump president again, we're now a sick joke.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

With trump president again, we’re now a sick joke.

Sure seems like we're heading towards literal gallows humor. (Whose gallows remains an open question.)

[-] Tarquinn2049@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

We liked Obama, what's he up to now? Think you could convince him to grey his hair a little more due to actually taking the job seriously?

[-] BrokenGlepnir@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Unfortunately he respects the rules to much to run for a third term

[-] Tarquinn2049@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It's ok, trump is fixing that rule, so Obama can come back even following the rules. But even if not, I bet there is probably at least 1 more person that would be a good president, we haven't seen much evidence of that... but they must exist.

[-] anas@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

Trump is changing the rules so that only he can run again

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 weeks ago

I saw nothing about this as an American living in a blue state.

[-] nooneescapesthelaw@mander.xyz 0 points 4 weeks ago

No but I don't really care what non-americans think of my president

[-] Draedron@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 weeks ago

Proofing again how dumb and ignorant the maga cult is

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago
[-] nooneescapesthelaw@mander.xyz 0 points 4 weeks ago

I stand by what I said, what is wrong with it?

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

You mean apart from the bigotry and hate?

Because there's also the "how dare you care about your child more than people you aren't personally responsible for!" thing.

[-] nooneescapesthelaw@mander.xyz 0 points 4 weeks ago

There is no bigotry or hate, just a lack of empathy from the person I'm replying to. It sucks what's happening to their son, but what's happening in gaza is 10x worse by any metric.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago

No, a lack of empathy is telling someone they should care less about their own child's life being at risk, and who cares because they're trans, than people on the other side of the world.

That is about as unempathetic as you can get. And I'm amazed you don't realize it.

[-] nooneescapesthelaw@mander.xyz 0 points 4 weeks ago

The premise that parent puts forward is that I should be OK with genocide as long as his kid is ok. That's unemphatic. By any metric of the situation, one issue is far more important and extreme than the other.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago

They said nothing of the sort. That's just a lie.

And no, by any metric of the situation, a person's child is far more important than anything else in their life. Or should be. Because that child didn't ask to be born. They are owed everything.

And in this case, this child's life is in danger because of a genocide of trans people that is already well underway and that you apparently don't give a shit about. I guess there's only one genocide that matters.

And what exactly have you done about it other than berate people for caring more about their own children than they do the genocide in Palestine? Because I spend hours each week contacting politicians for JVP. Before I escaped on Monday with my own queer child (who you probably think I should also not care about), the staffers at Larry Buschon's regional office were sick of me going there twice a month.

Have you done anything other than sit on your ass and tell people not to care about their kids?

[-] nooneescapesthelaw@mander.xyz 0 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

You need to go through the entire thread.

This guy is saying we should've left the gazans to their fate in exchange for his child's gender identity.

Also trans people are not being genocided. They are not being chased in the streets and killed, nor are they being rounded up in camps, nor are there bombs getting dropped in their gathering places. What's happening to gazans is genocide, what happened to the rhoyinga is genocide. When shit gets even close to that level, then it's genocide.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago

That's what I thought, you have not done a single thing about the genocide in Palestine other than berate people. Not one email to one politician despite there being easily accessible form emails. Very eager to berate others, too lazy to do anything yourself.

Also, you do not understand what genocide is.

https://spartanscoop.org/2023/04/the-steps-of-genocide-and-trans-americans/

Alternately, you do understand what genocide is, but you're okay with it when it is happening to queer people. And I suspect that's the real answer considering you think a parent of a trans kid shouldn't prioritize their safety.

[-] nooneescapesthelaw@mander.xyz 0 points 4 weeks ago

The articles you have linked to are a mix of rubbish and fear mongering.

What is currently transpiring with transgender people in the U.S. is comparable to the Holocaust or any true genocide that has taken place

That is fucking horrendous to say. Those two things are not even in the same sport much less the league.

What's happening to queers in the US is not genocide. It does not meet the legal definition of genocide (according to the wiki section you posted), going around saying stuff like that minimizes actual genocide

As for what I'm doing on Palestine, I will not respond to this question for the sake of my anonymity. Now you may just say that I'm using this a veil, but it's pretty easy for me to lie and say I've done so and so when I have not.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago

How did I guess? "Those lying trannies are just fine."

Also, "I'm not going to tell you what I do" is bullshit. You don't do a thing. I told you what I do and it in no way reveals my identity.

You have done nothing about the genocide in Palestine and we both know it.

Have you ever even talked to a Palestinian in your life and asked them what they would like you to help with? Doubtful. Too busy hating queer people.

[-] nooneescapesthelaw@mander.xyz 0 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

In Egyptian, I live in the US. I meet Palestinians everyday, there are Palestinians in my family. Palestine for you is an issue that popped up about a 2 years ago, for me it's been the struggle of generations. I have family members that have died in wars about this matter, thrown in prison and tortured. You don't understand what it's like to actually be in danger, so shut the fuck up. You are used to not having backlash whereas I've seen doors broken down and hoods thrown over people's faces over Facebook posts.

If it gets out that you sent some emails, who gives a shit. There is no risk for you, for me there is, therefore it's imperative that I don't discuss what I do, or don't do on the Internet. Emails aren't really that important, voting is far more important yet when that right is exercised people like you and the other guy bitch about it.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

Palestine for you is an issue that popped up about a 2 years ago,

Why are you lying about me? I've had a close Palestinian friend since I was six years old.

[-] nooneescapesthelaw@mander.xyz 1 points 3 weeks ago

Fair enough, guess I was wrong about that, still stand by everything else I said.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

I literally fled the U.S. this week because my lesbian daughter's life is at risk. If it got out that she's queer under Trump in a year or so, it's going to be straight to a camp.

So yeah, my life is not in danger, just my daughter's. Which is not a problem for me at all, right?

(If this conversation goes as they often do, it's now your turn to claim that queer people are in no danger under Trump.)

[-] nooneescapesthelaw@mander.xyz 0 points 3 weeks ago

They are not in any serious danger, let's wait a year and see if you are correct

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yep, that's what I thought. You think there's only one genocide that matters.

The queer genocide started before Trump got into office. You just obviously don't give a shit what happens to queer people.

[-] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago

Just wait for the German Fasching (Carnival) parades, we will bring back the floats depicting Don taking it up the ass from Vlad.

[-] samus12345@lemm.ee 0 points 4 weeks ago
[-] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

LOLOLO! That was one of the floats! Danke!

[-] samus12345@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago

They've got their work cut out for them this year! Now that the US government has gone full fucking Nazi I'm expecting some well-deserved brutally scathing criticism.

[-] JoshuaBrusque@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago

Because protests accomplish absolutely nothing in America without violence. The billionaires are nice and comfy in their ivory towers, they have no concern for the peasants on the streets. If they are comfortable then nothing changes.

[-] pingveno@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

The violent protests didn't do shit either, they just pissed off the rest of the citizenship. When protests turn to violence, all too often it's against the businesses that the peasants frequent.

[-] Kaboom@reddthat.com -2 points 1 month ago

No, I saw an article about it. It was just overshadowed by Elon.
