An image of the wildfires in Rhodes, taken on July 23rd, showing the flames and the plume of smoke.

Greece, in late July, faced a heatwave in which over 8 million people experienced temperatures about 41C, with some areas reaching above 45C - all in all, both the longest heatwave in Greek history, as well as some of the highest temperatures on record.

Due to these high temperatures, Greece was then struck by hundreds of wildfires this summer, affecting nearly 200,000 hectares. About half of the total burned area was in the north-east of Greece, in the Dadia national park near the city of Alexandropoulis - the single largest blaze that the EU has recorded. Other parts of the country were also struck, such as Attica, Magnesia, and islands like Corfu and particularly Rhodes; the last one prompted an evacuation of 20,000 people, the largest evacuation operation the island had ever seen. Of course, this is just one country of many that have been caught in the European wildfires this year, of which the total burned area approached 500,000 hectares - the only consolation is that this was less than last year.

Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkiye were impacted in early September by flooding caused by massive storms bringing a deluge of water - in Greece, this mainly impacted Thessaly, in the centre of Greece.

Luckily for Greece, despite being a very earthquake-prone country, they have experienced no significant quakes lately to round out the four (I hope I haven't jinxed it) - though, of course, earlier this year, a major earthquake struck nearby Turkiye, killing 60,000 people and injuring 120,000.

The Country of the Week is Greece! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Very sad news from Iraq. Noor BM, who is perhaps the most famous trans woman in Iraq, has been sadly killed in the street by some nutcase delivery driver who was carrying a gun. Noor's birth name was Mohammed Noor, but she later adopted the name Noor BM after coming out. The backlash against her was quite harsh in the beginning, which forced her into dark circles associated with prostitution and organized crime. Despite all the darkness, she still had some loyal followers and many people supported her and asked people to leave her alone. Everything had calmed down recently and Noor managed to live a relatively normal life, making money from TikTok Live and stuff like that. The way her life tragically ended today so suddenly is really sad, most young people in Iraq are mourning her on social media.

Hello from Damascus, Syria. Still working under my faithful Turkish VPN. Visited Aleppo and Homs in the last two days, which has to be the most traumatic experience of my life. What happened to this country is a tragedy, and honestly Bashar Al Assad despite all the Lion memes that we like, was responsible for a large portion of the crimes here. The scale of the destruction and suffering is just crazy, entire neighbourhoods have been obliterated from the fighting and the bombings. A relative of mine lives in an Aleppo suburb and I visited her while I was there. Her house is still half rubble, which she has "sectioned off" with rags and old wood, so that the kids don't wander there. She lost one son who was out protesting the government in 2011/2012, and then got arrested and tortured to death by the government. Another son got drafted in the SAA and got wounded in the Aleppo battle in 2016, he still can barely walk and gets something like 30$ a month from the government as a pension. Her youngest son managed to escape to Germany via Turkey. Just pure despair from all angles. She made us delicious warak anab though. Full trip report coming next week when I'm back in Beirut, I need a few days to gather my thoughts first.

It's incredibly annoying to see a lot of radlib spheres treating the whole Canadian parliament applauding an SS war criminal shit as some act of innocent naivety when it's pretty fucking obvious what side someone who fought the Soviet Union in WW2 was on.

Reddit’s world news banned discussion or posting it until an editorial presenting it as “an accusation from Russia about a war veteran” was finally put up a day later. Somehow they found a worse take than banning discussion outright.

Of course all the comments were saying Russia is evil and has no ground to stand on, and not engaging with the reality at all.

These people are propagandized to the extreme, unfortunately.

Is the West purposefully setting up the conditions for the rise of the far right in Europe? The parallels between now and 100 years ago are mind blowing. Destroying Germany's economy while the AfD is on the rise. Dog piling on Russia. Media openly praising literal Nazis. Ala Adolph Hitler, Time's man of the Year.

Does Zelensky do anything other than throw whiny tantrums, beg for money, and pimp himself out on photoshoots for the Nazi clothing brand as le epic anti-Russian democracy warrior?

He’s completely indistinguishable from the thousands of other corrupt bureaucrat compradors, except that he lucked into being the MSM precious baby darling who can do no wrong and is literally Harry Potter.

Do you know how hard it is to get a 98 year old anywhere? It took a concerted effort for the cretins in Canadian parliament to find a geriatric pre-flood nephilim of racism and parade him around as a freedom fighter. These liberal meritocrats, who justify their positions with elite academic credentials, somehow "made a mistake" in finding this guy?

Either they're ideological fellow travelers with nazism or they're too ignorant to google "first galician", maybe it's a mix of both. Either way these people are supremely unfit to rule.

I think it’s great that pretty much every major and relevant power, supernational or regional, is treating the expulsion of 120,000 people by the Azerbaijani government with the threat of violence for not doing so (as textbook ethnic cleansing as it comes) with little more than some fetid hand waving. Truly amazing.

Moon Of Alabama has found this gem of a sentence from the US regime-affiliated think tank ISW:

Putin may have ordered the Russian military command to hold all Russia’s initial defensive positions to create the illusion that Ukrainian counteroffensives have not achieved any tactical or operational effects despite substantial Western support.

What a devious propaganda technique, winning just to give people the idea that you are winning.

Within a couple of months in 2022 Ukraine went from a slightly radioactive slush fund occasionally seen in VICE documentaries about nazi paramilitaries to a load bearing pillar of every single liberal party west of the black sea.

I had assumed early on that the liberal apparatchiks were just cynical ghouls who didn't really believe in anything they were saying, but this really seems like something different.

The decision to dredge up and applaud SS criminals as Ukrainian freedom fighters and publicly engage in crackpot holocaust revisionism is the geopolitics equivalent of calling someone the n word because they're beating you in a video game. Ukraine's failure to deliver anything that could conceivably be called a victory has wounded people who normally seem bloodless.

Ukraine’s democracy is facing a wartime election test

Russia and Ukraine are both supposed to hold presidential elections next March. Autocratic Russia will go ahead. But for democratic Ukraine, under constant threat of Russian attack and constrained by martial law, it is a lot more complicated. Parliamentary elections due next month have already, in effect, been cancelled.

After the Canadian Nazi celebration bullshit, a side topic that has emerged is what happened to Eastern European Nazis who remained in Eastern Europe. And here's what liberals believe:

the nazis of 1945 just became communists in 1946, basically no one was prosecuted, apart from a tiny few

So Rakosi executed Szalasi and his government along with Sztojay et al., many Hungarian fascists went to prison/gulag, but Rakosi made the decision to let the insignificant ones live regular lives. Unless you know, if they committed war crimes. Then they were executed. (There was a famous trial in the 60s where war criminals, one of them an insignificant party member, were found out - a victim came forward after recognizing the nazi on the street - then they executed the nazis.)

In summary:

  • If you are Tito with barbara-pit then you are an unconscionable monster
  • If you only execute the top 200 fascists, imprison 10000, like the Hungarian comrades did, then you are soft on nazis, in fact you love nazis

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have signed a mutual defence pact, as the three Sahel countries aim to help each other against possible threats of armed rebellion or external aggression. The charter, known as the Alliance of Sahel States (ASS), signed on Saturday binds the signatories to assist one another – including militarily – in the event of an attack on any one of them.

I have a personal theory that Western neoliberals are incapable of caring strongly about a major issue for more than 2 years, after which point it is very likely to be replaced by the next big thing.

This theory is mostly based on how in 2018, Climate Change became a big topic again, which was then quickly substituted by Covid in 2020, which then got substituted by Ukraine in 2022. None of these problems are actually resolved, libs just don't give a shit anymore.

We're due for another focus change in 2024, and I think the presidential elections are going to be part of it.

Because Ukraine cannot survive without strong Western support, this is also why I personally believe that the war is going to end in 2025. By that point, Westeners won't care at all anymore, Biden or Trump will be in their second term and thus don't need to care about optics, and Ukraine's supplies will have dwindled to a critical level.

And Zelenskyy, who comes from a Jewish family, gave a standing ovation to a man who willingly took part in the extermination of Jews.

Zelenskyy's grandfather fought in the Red Army and against the people he gave a standing ovation to. Zelenskyy's great grandfather and three of his brothers were all killed during the Holocaust, he himself said last year that their village was burned down by the Germans. And he gave a standing ovation to a Nazi.

The westerners are just dragging this fool through the floor just because they can. This is very sad to see, they completely humilliated this man and his entire family just because they can.

r/worldnews moment. "Iran" targets US military helicopter with a laser, westerners in the comments demands for full obliteration of Iran.

Imperialism is not done only by soldiers, tanks, capitalists and journalists. It is also done by common people, those whose brains are poisoned by orientalism and western supremacy. Nowhere in the comments one of them will ask themselves "Why there is a US military helicopter so close to Iran?" No, it's definitely the Iranians fault.

And it's very amusing, albeit very irritating as well. One r*ddittor says that "this doesn't help Iran achieve it's diplomatic goals" (?????, rules based world order moment?) and that "their seizing of ships is a good indicator". Which is extremely funny, considering the US engages in actual piracy in the Persian Gulf lmfao. They're nothing but pure projection.

May the West die. From the oppressed peoples of the Global South: We will dismantle this hideous monster that is "The West".

The Swedish libs are such spineless cucks that their foreign policy goals of joining NATO gets derailed by a gaggle of mouth breathing neo-nazis who mostly grew to power by plastering toilet stalls with racist stickers.

Meanwhile, the libs have completely fallen for the "Muh free speech" absolutism meme and refuse to do anything against the surge of neo-nazism in Sweden because resisting fascism in any way would be uncivil or something.

Absolutely idiotic country. Getting bullied by Turkey and Hungary is exactly what Sweden deserves and I hope my own bullshit country gets the same treatment soon too.

On September 26, Polish education minister Przemysław Czarnek stated that his government may seek to extradite Hunka as a war criminal. In a post made on Twitter, Czarnek said: "In view of the scandalous events in the Canadian Parliament, which involved honoring a member of the criminal Nazi SS Galizien formation in the presence of President Zelensky, I have taken steps towards the possible extradition of this man to Poland. #NOForFalsifyingHistory!"

Ukrainian teams to boycott UEFA competitions after ban on Russian youth sides is lifted

Ukrainian football teams are set to boycott UEFA competitions after the European governing body decided to lift a ban on Russian youth sides. Matches involving Russian teams will be held without the country's flag, national anthem, international kit and outside the territory of Russia.

Restrictions had previously prevented Russia from taking part in tournaments including the Women's European Championship and the World Cup qualifiers. UEFA said in a statement on Wednesday that children should not suffer because of the actions of adults, but clarified that senior teams at club and national levels would remain banned due to Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) urged UEFA to maintain the blanket ban and added that the decision is groundless and tolerates Moscow's aggression.

I'm sorry, but every single Russian citizen, even children, now possesses the original sin of Russian aggression and must be punished for this.

...no, what the fuck are you talking about? Just because a German citizen freely and knowingly volunteered to join the Waffen SS, that doesn't make them an evil Nazi! How unnuanced!

Historic move as Macron offers Corsica autonomy 'without disengagement from the state'

France's President proposed a constitutional text to Corsica's elected representatives to build autonomy for the island "without any disengagement from the state".

"It will not be autonomy against the State, nor autonomy without the State, but autonomy for Corsica and within the republic," he explained.

This unique proposal comes at the end of several months of discussions between the government and local political leaders.

Even 78 years after Hitler's suicide in the bunker of the Reich Chancellery in Berlin — with which he evaded all responsibility shortly before the unconditional surrender of the German Army — there are still discussions about the use of his birthplace. Austria is struggling with the recognition and would like to get rid of the neo-Nazi pilgrimage site.

That is why a police station is now to be housed there, but this is being met with resistance.

It's kinda wild how the West built this image of South America (especially Argentina and Brazil) as this safe haven for Nazis and other shitty people. And to some extent, it is true, South America became a hiding spot for Nazis. But this isn't the case because we're "naturally inclined to protect Nazis because muh grandfathers", it is mostly due to the fact that these Nazis used to settle in remote areas, away from public eyes. But now it turns out that the West itself not only employed a large number of Nazis in government and it's agencies (like in many government positions in West Germany and the CIA), but also a lot of them got to live completely free of any punishment in bastions of Democracy and Freedom like the United States and, especially, Canada, who knew they had Nazis living within their borders and they did NOTHING about it.

So the West, with their shitty "don't ask an Argentinian what was his grandfather doing in 1941" memes can suck my entire fucking cock. It's always projection from them, oh it's the silly south americans with their silly authoritarian tendencies who kept hiding Nazis because whatever the fuck, instead us, The West (TM), we definitely didn't employ Nazis in the CIA to hunt down Communists and Human Rights Activists in the Global South and we certainly didn't put actual Fascists in charge of countries like Chile and Argentina. Motherfucker, we put our Fascists to trial, we jailed our US-imported fascists, we did more Denazification than West fucking Germany. May the West die.

Is this what they call cute smol bean freedom loving democratic... checks notes Tesla factory? I want to see some dipshit lib turn around and say Nazism is bad now that it is inconvenient lol.

US agency sues Tesla as Black workers report “swastikas, threats, and nooses”

Black workers heard slurs “almost every day” According to the EEOC lawsuit, Black employees of Tesla reported hearing other workers use racist slurs "almost every day."

"One Black worker observed that 'people were using the N-word all the time, especially men, and particularly White men.' Another worker described her non-Black colleague repeatedly saying the N-word, 'a lot,'" the lawsuit said. Non-Black managers and non-managerial workers "alike directly addressed Black employees individually and collectively as N-words," the lawsuit said.

"One worker described the N-word as both his White co-workers' and supervisor's preferred pronoun on the production line," the lawsuit said. Non-Black employees also began "otherwise innocuous interactions with Black employees with phrases" including the word, using the racist slur as if it was "casual and normal," the lawsuit said.

"Black employees faced other race-based slurs and insults, as well. Non-Black workers have referred to Black employees as 'Black bitch,' 'Black ass bitch,' 'boy,' and 'monkey,' among other slurs. Non-Black workers have also mocked Black employees by making 'monkey' noises," the US agency alleged.

Black workers were allegedly called "lazy" and "smelly" in other examples of racist stereotyping. "A worker described how her White co-worker would claim, '[N-words] always be late,' after a Black co-worker arrived five minutes late," the lawsuit said.

Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --
