The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) confirmed it has launched an investigation into the arrest that happened Jan. 31 in Mosakahiken Cree Nation.

A portion of that arrest was captured on video and has since been shared on social media. It shows an officer standing on a man’s chest. The man, whose hands appear to be restrained behind his back, is heard yelling about his heart.

In a release, RCMP said they are aware of the video but said it shows a “small portion” of the arrest, and confirmed the IIU had been notified.

This should lead to immediate termination of the Officers involved. There is never a reason to do this as a police officer, and having it happen once is too much.

There has been worse events and the RCMP never face consequences. We need more French blood, where people take to the streets until change happens

The RCMP aren't a problem in Quebec?

The RCMP aren't a problem in Quebec?

Nope, because Quebec has its own provincial police force -- the Sûreté du Québec -- just like Ontario has the OPP instead of the RCMP.

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Having lived in Ottawa and been cautioned not to mess up and have to talk to the SQ as an Anglo, after having the "OPies are RCMP washouts" talk, I hope you're not holding either as a metric by which any success should be measured.

[-] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Nope. Just clarifying which PDs are in charge of which areas.

As always, ACAB.

We have been in Quebec since 1920. Back then, our officers used to enforce 40 federal statutes or so. One hundred years later, our mandate has evolved.

We lead major investigations in various fields, including: national and border security, financial integrity and organized crime. We share criminal intelligence with our partners in Quebec, Canada and worldwide. We protect Canadian politicians and foreign dignitaries while in Quebec.

We are proud to serve you throughout Quebec!

The RCMP "C" Division is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police division responsible for federal policing in the Province of Quebec. Approximately 1,500 police officers, civilian members, and public servants work to a number of different lines of effort, including financial integrity, national and border security, and organized crime enforcement.

Their power in Quebec is limited, ie: they don't do traffic stops, etc.

I give you a direct source and you give me a wikipedia page?

Go troll elsewhere, we are done here.

HellsBelle isn't even trolling here.
The RCMP does exist in Québec, but the vast majority of enforcement is done by the SQ.
Here, an arrest like the one in the OP would most likely be done by the SQ and not by the RCMP.

"Vast majority" and "Most likely" supports my point, so thank you for the assist in demonstrating that 100% of provincial policing is not done by the SQ.

[-] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Please show me where I said that the RCMP doesn't exist in Quebec.

If you can't, and just read what you thought was there, it would be a good time to stop arguing.

Please show me where I said that the RCMP doesn’t exist in Quebec.

If you can’t, and just read what you thought was there, it would be a good time to stop arguing.

Okay.

My question, posed to someone who isn't you by the way:

The RCMP aren’t a problem in Quebec?

Your response:

Nope, because Quebec has its own provincial police force – the Sûreté du Québec –just like Ontario has the OPP instead of the RCMP

Since I can easily show you exactly where you said it, it would be a good time to stop arguing eh?

Please show me the stats that proved the RCMP have the same problems (ie: in-custody murders, use of excessive force, etc) in Quebec as they do in the rest of Canada (except ON ofc).

I literally gave you a link directly to the RCMP.

Use that to find what you are looking for, and jog on in the meantime.

I mean France French, not Canadians. Canadians are docile compared to Europeans

Where do you believe people from Quebec got their "French blood" from, and what makes you believe that you aren't being an ignorant bigot right now?

[-] BCsven@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Have you seen people from Quebec storming the Parliament? Have you watched France's protests. Big difference between cultures even though they are a lineage. Genetics is not the only thing that defines a people, adopted culture is.

[-] Arkouda@lemmy.ca -5 points 1 month ago

Doubling down on bigotry I see. We are done here.

[-] BCsven@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

How is any of this bigotry? I think you are confused, and the downvotes support my conclusion. The French in France are known to rebel, there is a history. Canadian French might be passionate but they are still passive apathetic Canadians like the rest of us in Canada as a whole. Can not see how you find bigotry here. Absolutely ridiculous conclusion.

You are making broad generalizations about entire countries and continents. You have compared the entire population of Canada to the entire population of a continent with numerous countries and ideologies using those broad generalizations, as well as comparing the entire country to a single province with clear cultural differences. There is a history of violence in Quebec as well, which you need to ignore in order to make your prejudiced opinions work.

Hope that helps.

[-] BCsven@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Not really, I never brought up Quebec , you did. If you do some research and history checking you will see the French beheaded their monarchs, and throughout modern history have risen up to combat their governments over reach (and that does not mean violently) in small and large matters. The French have a culture of standing up for themselves, and as Canadians we have not, we have let the government do things and we just say meh oh well. There is no bigotry here, it is historic fact.

If you were to reread from the beginning I was giving French citizens kudos for standing up for what is right. Canada needs more of that. How this turned to bigotry is some odd projection from you only, everyone else understood the context.

The lady doth protest to much, methinks.

[-] BCsven@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

:) protesting is good. Have a nice weekend.

[-] Arkouda@lemmy.ca -2 points 1 month ago

Depends on the protest. Have a miserable weekend.

[-] x00z@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

Whenever you do something wrong, even a small offense, the police will use it to justify whatever they want. They'll use force instead of words, and when you respond to their force with resistance they'll use even more and treat you like filth. They use methods to provoke you. They act like assholes because the moment you respond to that, they can justify being the assholes.

Fuck cops. They need to be held to the highest of standards and should be jailed for abuse.

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

Seems context is crucial here. I'm interested in hearing what could possibly make this acceptable.

No no, I'll wait.

[-] Slax@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

Not sure if there is ever a time someone should be standing on someone's chest... There are better ways and those methods are the ones they train.

[-] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

All cops are vindictive assholes all of the time.

[-] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

Just from the title, I knew the man that the cop was standing on top of is indigenous.

[-] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago

Imagine the sadistic mindset to do this to anyone in most any situation.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Hopefully Wab Kinew kicks out the RCMP crooks from Manitoba!

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

There will be people who insist it's fine, because they'll excuse anything done by rightful authority.

Cut these people out of your life. Tell them why.
