Holy shit that is an absurd amount of money. Even a fraction of that amount could overhaul and upgrade their education, healthcare, housing, etc

Literally pissing your taxpayers money down the drain.

This is just crazy.

How about you use this 60B to fix the healthcare system you dumb irresponsible fuck...

[-] Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 month ago

Probably because his buddy Galen weston promised to help with the healthcare thing and his bullshit maple horseshit.

[-] kbal@fedia.io 32 points 1 month ago

For that kind of money you could give away electric bicycles to everyone in the Toronto area who wants one for the next hundred years.

Or make the TTC free for 40-50 years. Or buy the 407 outright and make the TTC free for a decade or so.

Well don't get silly.

[-] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

I imagine that'd cover free public transit as well which would get more people off the roads

[-] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago

The only solution to traffic and gridlock is providing viable alternatives to driving. If you're gonna spend all the money on a tunnel, at least put a train in there. A double track would have a way higher throughput than even 10 lanes of underground traffic.

[-] Eczpurt@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

I don't think I'll ever comprehend why alternatives to driving are never explored properly. I think roads or equivalents have to be so much more expensive to construct and maintain than a rail.

Heck even a roundabout once in a while helps with traffic flow from what I've seen.

[-] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

It’s not that hard to understand. Cars and oil are big business. Cheap/good transit would cut in to that business. Liberals and Conservatives are in bed with big business.

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Liberals and Conservatives are in bed with big business.

That's like saying Paul Reubens and Jim Jones were both criminals. There's some room for nuance.

[-] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

There's a poor attitude towards transit because we don't have a lot of quality transit. Why give up your automotive freedom and ride with the poors??? If only more people realized how freeing good transit actually is

[-] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 27 points 1 month ago

How about we make sure everyone has a doctor before we spend 20 years digging a hole that will only reduce how long it takes to drive to work.

[-] DoYouNot@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago

Bold of you to assume it would actually reduce how long it takes to get to work in the long run...

[-] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 month ago

As yes, the party of fiscal responsibility promising a $60 billion tunnel nobody needs or asked for

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 month ago

Okay buddy.......... really trying to throw $60 billion into a hole!

[-] Trex202@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Literally down a hole. A hole that the public won't be able to see the progress of.

[-] yonder@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 month ago

A hole that further entrenches the dominance of Cars. Oh, but don't worry! This time, the new lanes will definitely fix the congestion.

[-] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 1 points 1 month ago

What better way of keeping the devil down in a hole than with throwing 60 billions into it.

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 month ago

Fucker, we need healthcare and help for the homeless.

[-] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 month ago

The tunnel under the 401 would take at least 20 years to build

Wow, just wow.

Also, is this for cars? Cause it would the have the same energy as “just one more lane bro”

[-] TheFin@leminal.space 4 points 1 month ago

no, the experts are not only not happy, they can't stop laughing

[-] pedz@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Is he inspired by the CAQ in Quebec or something?

The CAQ have been juggling with the idea of a third bridge or tunnel between Québec City and Lévis because, comgestion, and in case one of the two already existing ones becomes unusable.

So we have cuts in education and health care, they can't possibly give money to social programs, BUT, there would be 10 billion somewhere to build this "third link".
