Maybe we should be barring these companies that dump their teams after releasing a game from winning awards?

[-] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Or give the awards directly to the credited teams, and not to the companies.

We don’t give Oscars to film companies. Imagine if an actor won an Oscar for a movie role, but didn’t walk up on stage to get it because they were already working on another movie. Sounds asinine, right? So why is it accepted in the game dev community?

You right. I was talking to my partner the other day about the injustice of record labels taking the artists' achievements as their own, putting the artists' triple platinum record on their walls as if they did more than advertise. Authors too - some authors sign predatory contracts with publishers that completely castrate their earnings but the publisher gets rich. Creators of media, for the most part, get completely wrung dry unless they manage themselves. I'd say movies are one of the only sectors of the industry that don't leech the artists as far as I know

Totally fair. Why should the business get the award when the people that made the thing that won the award no longer work for the business?

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 57 points 23 hours ago

We should. This is fucking bullshit exploitation.

At the marketing circle jerk that is the other game awards, I would expect this. At the Game goddamn developers choice awards, yeah, show some support for the people. OR, make the effort to reach out to the people that made the game - some of them were actually at the GDC! It's not like they dropped off the face of the earth after being laid off.

Imagine a best actor award at the Oscars not having anyone come up because the actor left Miramax to join Universal afterwards - but the fucking guy is sitting in the audience.

What an embarrassment.

Thinking Max likely isn't returning then as promised at the end?

[-] Ashtear@lemm.ee 5 points 12 hours ago

The series is definitely in trouble. Who knows, maybe SQEX will shuffle it off to a different studio again.

[-] Psythik@lemm.ee 2 points 11 hours ago

Not surprised. I never finished any of the spinoffs or sequels (other than Before the Storm). The characters are boring, and removing the time rewinding mechanic is lame as fuck. I just want more Max and Chloe.

I didn't hate DE and really liked most of True Colors, but the first game really was lightning in a bottle. They haven't come close to it.

[-] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 8 points 18 hours ago

I liked life is strange, we ran off together and said fuck the town

[-] FeelzGoodMan420@eviltoast.org 8 points 21 hours ago

Everything I read says that this game is dogshit. Just goes to show how fucking useless "video game awards" are.

[-] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 8 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

Don't know anything about the game, but from the article it sounds like it was a commercial flop? Which would make it understandable that a lot of the dev team got laid off. This would be a different situation from those companies who had successes and then proceeded to lay off their dev teams anyway.

[-] Hubi@feddit.org 14 points 22 hours ago

Looking at their most recent releases it seems pretty much every game aside from the original Life is Strange has been a commercial flop.

[-] DontTreadOnBigfoot@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago

I never played 2, but I loved the original, and really liked both Before the Storm and True Colors.

They're really good at making me care about their characters

[-] tatann@lemm.ee 1 points 14 hours ago

You should play LiS 2, it's a really good one. I prefered it to Before The Storm and thought it was on par with LiS 1.

Also play The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit before, it's free and serves as a short prequel to LiS 2

[-] accideath@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Loved 2, but am a bit biased, being an older brother myself.

Can also recommend Tell Me Why. It’s essentially a life is strange game by don’t nod but published by Microsoft instead of Square Enix. Is usually free during pride month as one if it’s protagonists is transgender.

[-] Strawberry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 17 hours ago

2 Was the best tbh, even though I'm biased towards the others for queer reasons

[-] DontTreadOnBigfoot@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

I'm a full on rural cis hetero gym bro, but I have such a soft spot for disaster lesbians.

[-] rikudou@lemmings.world 2 points 20 hours ago

2 was really boring. Though I didn't like even True Colors. But the original and Before the Storm are some of my most favourite games altogether.

[-] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 3 points 22 hours ago

Yeah, seems like a standard case of unwarranted internet outrage.

[-] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 5 points 20 hours ago

That's just Square Enix coding. All of their games are flops by their records.
