Summary

Walmart fired Dani Davis, a 6'4" cisgender woman, after a man who mistook her for transgender verbally threatened her in a women’s restroom at a Florida store.

Davis, visibly shaken, reported the March 14 incident to her immediate supervisor but was fired for not informing salaried management, allegedly creating a “security risk.”

Davis called the firing discriminatory. After viral backlash, Walmart offered to reinstate her with back pay.

Davis, a longtime employee, is uncertain about returning, citing fears of a hostile work environment.

So, a man went into the ladies' restroom to assault a woman because he's afraid of men entering the ladies' room to assault women.

Oh Florida... You constant shame on the republic.

[-] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 100 points 1 week ago

It's a constant shame on the empire now

This is the desired outcome. They want all women to be as gender conforming and submissive to men as possible. They know it affects women who do not fit the defined conventions of what women are meant to look like / act like / talk like etc. This is actually the main reason they want to do it.

Then Walmart fires her? WTF, the man should be banned from the store. Fuck Walmart.

It doesn't really matter if she is trans or not IMO. nobody deserves to be treated like that.

[-] YtA4QCam2A9j7EfTgHrH@infosec.pub 117 points 1 week ago

It does demonstrate the truism that transphobia doesn’t only harm trans people.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 70 points 1 week ago

That's the whole point. Any woman who doesn't conform to the traditional stereotype can be targeted. This is in no way accidental.

[-] OrganicMustard@lemmy.world 38 points 1 week ago

Even traditionally feminine western women. They can just point to a minor detail like a wider mandible, a bit of hair on the upper lip or arms, a more developed Adam's apple, etc.

“The voice was much louder than simply someone yelling in from the door. This man was fully IN the restroom, yelling something about” transgender women, Davis wrote.

Davis said the man yelled he was going to “beat" them and was going to “protect his wife/girlfriend from them” while his wife or girlfriend was pleading with him to stop and leave before he got into trouble.

Davis wrote she was scared and froze, not knowing if the man was going to physically attack her.

So to protect cis women, he is threatening and scaring cis women.

[-] SilentStorms@lemmy.dbzer0.com 91 points 1 week ago

Gotta protect women from “men” entering the women’s washroom, by entering the women’s washroom. Love it.

[-] Hellahunter@lemmy.world 74 points 1 week ago

What a total douche. Also, how does Walmart come to the conclusion that firing this woman was for the best?

Like they tried to save face and make up for it, but it was too little too late.

Walmart has been and will always be garbage.

[-] FreeHat@lemmy.world 47 points 1 week ago

I find it fascinating that guys like this usually have a wife/girlfriend who somehow excuses their behavior like WTF is in their head? Are they stupid or just as shitty as the person they're following around?

[-] grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org 42 points 1 week ago

I think it can be a (bad) cultural thing. When I told my mom I worried my cousin's new husband was abusive, my mom told me he was "a regular Kentucky man. They're just like that."

(My other cousin confirmed her sister's new husband was an abusive dick, but sister refused to leave him. Other cousin and I both went out of state for college, which helps break indoctrination. We were back in town for a funeral.)

Are people finally now realizing that transphobia affects cis people?? Even if you don’t declare yourself trans, but look any different than typically feminine or masculine, you’re a target for the folks who can “always tell”. It goes without saying that these people are unimaginably idiotic.

[-] finder585@lemmy.world 49 points 1 week ago

Are people finally now realizing that transphobia affects cis people??

Same for homophobia. Sadly, some folks don't realize until it happens to themselves or to someone they care about.

Hopefully, these stories will help wake some people up to that reality before that happens.

[-] theangryseal@lemmy.world 47 points 1 week ago

I am a straight man. I have lived as a straight man all my life. I have only been with women.

Yet, I was somehow bullied for being gay in high school until I just dropped out. I mean, there was more to it than that, but that was the reason I vomited when I seen the school sign.

Why was the man who was threatened by her in the women's room?

[-] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 101 points 1 week ago

Obviously he was just there to make sure everyone using the women's restroom had and honest, God-given pussy.

This story is so depressing on so many levels.

First and most obviously, we have a biological male entering a women's bathroom to harass and threaten a biological woman because he doesn't want biological males entering the women's bathroom to harass and threaten biological women. Dumb redneck stared into the abyss and it stared back, as it always does. Congrats, dickhead. You are the thing you claim to hate.

But then we have this shit:

Dani Davis, who is queer, took to social media on March 24 and wrote a post about what she said happened while she was at work. The incident occurred on March 14 at the Walmart in Lake City, Florida. She noted she was a nearly seven-year employee of Walmart and holds several other part-time jobs, including the “joy and privilege" of tutoring "special-needs children as requested,” describing herself as a hard worker who has never been in trouble.

How many more reminders do we need that Capitalism hates us and our employers don't even see us as human? A person should not have to work "several part-time jobs", one of which is with the biggest private employer on earth, just to get by.

Does anyone else remember the 'Hey Mon' sketch from 'In Living Color' about an immigrant family that all had like 10 jobs each? It was supposed to be a joke to have to work that much to make ends meet. We weren't supposed to make it a reality for everyone.

I hate this world.

This literally happened in the 1954 Lavender Scare. Coworkers could report you for being a "security risk" and you'd be fired because they assumed you were a lesbian.

It's why we have pride parades, to exercise that muscle and stamp out the fear of "otherness" in society.

[-] WhoIsTheDrizzle@lemmy.world 36 points 1 week ago

Before I read about the Lavender Scare, I didn't realize that Washington was a growing gay hub in the 40s/50s due to the expanded bureaucracy post New Deal. Also, that the anti-gay policies spread to universities and the private sector, which seemed to become the norm after that. Eventually, universities and the private sector cared more about sexual orientation than if you were previously a member of the Communist party. History is important and relevant.

So, she was fired because… some dude was wrong?

Our society really likes to shit on women all the time, doesn't it?

[-] GlendatheGayWitch@lemmy.world 57 points 1 week ago

She was fired because a man (without affiliation with walmart) entered the women's restroom and verbally assaulted her. He wasn't just factually wrong assuming that a woman can't be tall, he entered a space that he knew he wasnt supposed to enter.

  1. I used to work for Wal-Mart, this doesn't surprise me. They actually tried to have me written up for using a women's room as a transgender woman and decided not to only because I pointed out that that would be discrimination under the law (Trump wasn't president at the time) My days with the company were pretty much numbered after that. They're not looking for workers, they're looking for slaves; anyone who thinks they have rights aren't slaves.

  2. Isn't it obvious? The reason they want to criminalize transpeople, someone who's already an "invisible minority" is because any "Woke" behavior can be classified as "Trans" behavior... And anything the state doesn't like can be classified as "Woke", the Nazis actually did this by banning the teaching of any science and philosophy that was deemed to be too Jewish... Which was a net positive for the world for the sole reason of this meaning that Hitler never had the atomic bomb (He could have, but then he called the science behind it "Jewish Superstition masquerading as science." and ordered it halted)

Transphobia rots the brain. The fact the store still fired her is insane. I hope she just takes them to court instead of taking her old job back.

Not a shock that Rural Redneck Inc. has dipshits for managers, as the owners are some of the most unethical monsters ever bred in the capitalist culture of America.

WTF. For not informing salaried management? GTFO. She has a job to do and your bullshit corporate structure is dumb. Its a management failure for adding complexity where there shouldnt be any. Instead of any 360 introspection, they took what they thought was the easy way out. Salaried employee? Yeah, where was the manager when all this was happening? Great question. Not a brain cell fired, no pause at sanctioning harassment of employees. Walmart can suck it. Cheap disposable shit anyway. Leaches created the environment that requires their teet. Do all you can to shop direct and local.

In his dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson, John Marshall Harlan cited one of his objections to Louisiana's public transit segregation law as being that it effectively left the execution of policy to railroad porters. Homer Plessy was a light-skinned Creole man whose family was free before the Civil War. He would have enjoyed roughly equal rights to Whites up until the first generation of Jim Crow laws in the 1870s. Harlan pointed out that the criteria for "White" and "Black" for the purposes of segregation was not solid, just being whoever was in charge of the segregated facilities looking at them and determining what they are.

There is nothing new under the Sun.

Let me just state the obvious: They fired her due to the current US administration. She got harassed in the first place because of the current US administration.

Trump is effecting corporate decisions without even making in specific executive orders as well bolstering the common rightwing individual's boldness in harassing people.

How the fuck can you reprimand someone for not reporting an incident properly when they report it to their supervisor? The supervisor's responsibility at that point is to either inform the employee of the proper way to report it or report it on their behalf. If the report doesn't come through properly then the supervisor has failed to fulfill their duties, not the other employee.

I would boycott Walmart but I already started boycotting them over a decade ago. I understand some people in tight financial situations need the lower prices they can get from places like Walmart. And therefore they cannot so freely boycott such a place but if you're somebody who can avoid it I would advise steering clear of that shit hole. Their policies are trash and the family that owns it are oligarchical douche bags.
