Image of destruction in Mandalay, Myanmar, from Al Jazeera.

As if the ongoing civil war wasn't enough, Myanmar has now been struck by a very powerful earthquake, resulting in 2000 deaths and thousands more injured as of the time of writing. Estimates are that the death toll could reach 10,000. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are damaged, and the hospitals are overwhelmed. The earthquake struck during Eid prayers, resulting in even higher casualties as several mosques collapsed. 20 million people already required humanitarian assistance in Myanmar, and now the situation there will be even worse. International rescue teams have rushed into the country, and aid is being raised, though with USAID experiencing the... changes that it is, the United States will be of even more limited help than usual. So far, China has sent $14 million, while USAID has supplied $2 million. In Thailand, the death toll seems considerably lower, though there has still been significant damage; a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok.

Myanmar is located very close to the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In particular, the country is divided in two by the north-south oriented Sagaing fault. This fault is typically strike-slip; that is, each side of the fault moves horizontally past each other. The earthquake's depth was 10 kilometers, which is pretty shallow, and its proximity to the surface amplified the felt force of the earthquake. Additionally, the soft soil in this region tends to further amplify seismic waves through a process called liquefaction. Combine all this with the lackluster building codes due to many years of impoverishment and civil wars, and this explains why the death toll, and the expense to the country in general to repair damage, will probably be extremely high.

https://www.kjzz.org/fronteras-desk/2025-04-01/u-s-denies-mexicos-request-for-colorado-river-water-for-1st-time-in-80-years

The U.S. is denying Mexico’s request for Colorado River water for the first time since the two countries signed a water-sharing treaty in 1944.

The Trump administration said it will deny a special request to deliver Colorado River water to Tijuana.

The water treaty Mexico and the U.S. signed in 1944 compels the U.S. to share Colorado River water with Mexico, and Mexico to share water from the Rio Grande with the U.S.

But Mexico has recently fallen behind on water deliveries to the U.S. Climate change and drought have meant less water to go around in dry northern Mexico.

In a social media post, the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs said Mexico’s failure to deliver water has been “decimating American agriculture.”

Gaza civil defense confirms rescue workers 'bound, executed, buried in mass grave' | The Cradle

'They were killed by "Israeli" forces while trying to save lives,' the UN humanitarian chief stated

The General Directorate of Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip confirmed on 2 April that "Israeli" forces executed Palestinian first responders and buried them in a mass grave in the Tal al-Sultan neighborhood of Rafah, southern Gaza, on 23 March.

The General Directorate reported that the bodies of eight from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), six from the Palestinian Civil Defence (PCD), and one UNRWA worker were found eight days later, buried approximately 200 meters from where their vehicles, an ambulance, and a fire engine had also been destroyed.

Some of the bodies were found with their hands bound and with bullet holes visible in their chests and heads. One of the victims had been decapitated, while others had been disfigured and dismembered.

I found a few interesting excerpts from Pepe Escobar's write up on his recent visit to Yemen.

We were relaxing in the dewanya of our hotel in Sana’a, drinking tea and waiting for the daily televised address to the nation by Leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi when suddenly he entered the room, unannounced. We were speechless: that was none other than Yahya Saree, the spokesman of the Yemeni Armed Forces, who Prof. Ma told me is a superstar in China – actually all across the Global Majority.

[...]

In a private conversation with Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a member of the High Political Council and former head of the Revolutionary Committee, I asked him whether Yemen had diplomatic efforts with Russia and China. The response, in flowery Arabic with several metaphors – lost in translation - and a profusion of smiles, was priceless: yes.

[...]

That neatly tied up with leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi, on X, announcing “there is an upcoming surprise regarding the development of Yemen's military capabilities that may surprise the United States. It could be revealed after its use, as actions will precede words.”

Very large US military movements have been observed over the last 72 hours, with mainly large redeployments and airlifts from Osan Air Base in South Korea, to Isa Air Base in Bahrain. Over a dozen C-17 transport aircraft have made flights into Bahrain, along with a handful of C-5M transport aircraft, the largest aircraft in the US military. Ramstein in Germany has been used as an intermediary base. Osan is home to the USAF's 51st Fighter Wing, which operates A-10 close air support attack and control aircraft, and Block 40 F-16C/D multirole fighter aircraft. There has also been a redeployment of A-10 aircraft from the National Guard in the USA to the Middle East at this time, with 300 airmen making the trip. Osan is also home to the 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade of the US Army, which operates the MIM-104 Patriot air defence system, and battery D of the THAAD Anti Ballistic Missile (ABM) system.

So this airlift is suspected to be in support of the A-10 deployment, and transfering air defence systems to the region. The potential use of the air defence systems is obvious (combatting ballistic and cruise missiles launched from Iran), but the A-10s less so. Iranian air defence systems would shoot them down, and they are meant for close air support, not launching standoff weapons. I think the A-10s are being deployed to intimidate the Popular Mobilisation Forces in Iraq, they would be used against them in a potential conflict. A-10s can also be used to counter Iranian fastboats and slow flying drones if necessary.

Israeli PsyOps and propaganda are hyping these movements up as the "largest military action since WW2 is about to take place against Iran ". So I hope this post can provide clarity in the propaganda space.

If anyone wants an idea of how a potential conventional attack on Iran would look like, the twitter thread below by a suspected ex Iranian Air Force pilot provides a good breakdown. It's quite long and I'm not going to break it down myself now, so use translation software like Google translate, deepL, or even AI LLMs like ChatGPT or deepseek to to translate it. Also ignore any political commentary.

US airstrikes continue on Yemen for the 22nd night in a row, with four airstrikes reported in Saada Governorate, west of Saada city.

More airstrikes, 5 reported at Kamaran Island.

Horrific images coming out of Gaza now, yesterday the IDF announced the creation of a new "security corridor", the Morag corridor in Gaza. This corridor is set to separate Rafah from Khan Yunis. Artillery operations and airstrikes are underway to facilitate this, resulting in the leveling of buildings and mass civilian casualties.

Statement from the Yemeni Armed Forces:

Also some quick comments on the JASSM stealth cruise missiles that some news outlets say are being used in Yemen, and B-2 stealth bombers, after thinking about it last night. While it's true that the US Navy is not firing JASSMs from F-18s and there is no evidence to suggest such is happening, JASSMs could be fired from B-2s, for a "stealth standoff" capabilitiy. The B-2 is the only aircraft in the US fleet with stealth standoff capabilitiy, JASSMs don't fit in the internal weapons bays of F-35 aircraft, and F-22s are air superiority fighter aircraft. So along with the bunker buster capabilities of the GBU-57 MOP, stealth standoff is another unique capability that only the B-2 can bring to the US arsenal.

Stealth standoff capabilitiy was actually first used in active combat by Russia in the 11 April 2024 attack on the Ukrainian Trypilska thermal power plant, using stealth Su-57 aircraft carrying stealth Kh-69 cruise missiles in it's internal weapons bays. If the B-2s are carrying out stealth standoff strikes in Yemen, that is complete overkill and not necessary. The most likely explanation would be live practice, for preparedness for future wars against Iran in the short term, and possibly China in the long term, where such a capability would be necessary.

An update on the bombings of the "Amad Tunnels" in Yemen. Satellite imagery has been released, showing a 100m/330ft+ long gash in a mountain in the Amad area. Only one aircraft in the US fleet carries a bomb big enough to make such a huge hole in a mountain, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber with the GBU-57 MOP bomb. So B-2s are being used in Yemen now. This also explains the censored satellite imagery of the B-2s at Diego Garcia, they were being worked on for missions. Expect official confirmation soon from US news sources.

Twitter link showing the satellite imagery

Xcancel mirror

Image of the 100+m gash:

How the site usually looks like on Google Maps, the gash would be just below the pin. You can also see the tunnel entrances along the main road:

Attempt to provide a measurement for context:

Official confirmation just in from CNN. Abdul Malik al-Houthi (the leader of the Ansarallah/Houthi movement) also commented on the use of B-2s in his latest speech.

B-2 bombers out of Diego Garcia are also being used against the Houthis, and an additional aircraft carrier as well as several fighter squadrons and air defense systems will soon be moved into the Central Command region, defense officials said this week.

The CNN article makes an error in munitions use though, the US Navy is using SLAM-ER cruise missiles, not JASSM cruise missiles.

More confirmation: the uncensored satellite imagery of the B-2s at Diego Garcia has been released, weapons loading in progress:

~~Given that the bombing of the Amad Tunnels took place on the morning of April 1st, Rybar were correct in their statement about B-2 bombers being used in Yemen.~~

Just checked, Rybar said the bombings tool place during March 29-30, a bit early.

In assessing the military impact of the US campaign, I'd say that the US has stopped Ansarallah from launching ballistic missiles at Israel for now, countered the unmanned aerial systems (cruise missiles and drones) threat with new weaponry and tactics, and suppressed their air defences to some extent, but Ansarallah are still able to shoot down slow flying drones like the MQ-9 Reaper, and Anti Ship Ballistic Missile (ASBM) capability appears to remain intact, given that the US Navy Carrier Strike Group is not coming within 700km of Yemen. As long as Ansarallah have ASBM capability, they can blockade the Red Sea. This a key capability that Ansarallah cannot allow to be degraded or lost. It's the backbone of their ability to carry out naval blockades. Ansarallah are set to unveil a new variant of their "Red Sea" missile based off of Iranian artillery rockets (so around 140km range) just for this purpose.

All in all this is another warning shot to Iran, the US just put a 400ft long crater in a mountainous bunker in Yemen. The GBU-57 MOP is a serious threat to underground facilities. I did a post on it here.

American Troops Threatens Danish Labour Laws

In Denmark the union 3F warns that an agreement between regimes of Copenhagen and Washington to establish American military bases in the Nordic hermit kingdom will lead to social dumping and underpayment by exempting the bases from Danish labour laws.

Under the deal, the U.S. military could outsource tasks like construction, cleaning, and catering without adhering to Danish wage and working conditions. 3F argues this violates International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions mandating that public contracts should align with local labor standards. They fear the agreement sets a harmful precedent, allowing foreign workers to be exploited under American anti-worker regulations, exacerbating existing issues of social dumping in Denmark.

FH, the national conference of trade unions, criticizes the deal as unfavorable to workers but deemed it too late to influence. The nation's rubber-stamp parliament is set to pass the agreement on April 11.

US prosecutors to seek death penalty for Luigi Mangione - BBC

Article

US prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of shooting dead UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement on Tuesday that she had directed federal prosecutors to seek the penalty for the "premeditated, cold-blooded assassination". Mr Thompson was shot dead outside a hotel in New York on 4 December. Police arrested Mr Mangione, 26, days later in Pennsylvania after a nationwide manhunt.

He has pleaded not guilty to state charges, and has yet to enter a plea for separate federal charges. He is currently awaiting trial in a New York prison. In the press release, Bondi said Mr Thompson's murder "was an act of political violence" and that it "may have posed grave risk of death to additional persons" nearby.

Investigators say Mr Mangione was motivated to kill Mr Thompson, 50, because of anger with US healthcare insurance companies. A lawyer for Mr Mangione called the decision "barbaric", accused the government of "defending the broken, immoral, and murderous healthcare industry", and said Mr Mangione was caught in a tug-of-war between state and federal prosecutors.

"While claiming to protect against murder, the federal government moves to commit the pre-meditated, state-sponsored murder of Luigi," said Karen Friedman Agnifilo in a statement. Mr Mangione is facing 11 state criminal counts in New York, including first-degree murder and murder as a crime of terrorism.

If convicted of all the counts, he would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. But federal prosecutors have also separately charged Mr Mangione for using a firearm to commit murder and interstate stalking resulting in death. These charges make him eligible for the death penalty.

Prosecutors have said the federal and state cases will move forward parallel with one another. Mr Mangione is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn.

New York prosecutors have already shared some evidence in their case against him, including a positive match of his fingerprints with those discovered at the crime scene.

According to New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Mr Mangione arrived in New York City on 24 November and stayed in a Manhattan hostel using a fake ID for 10 days before carrying out the attack against Mr Thompson.

The healthcare boss was shot in the back by a masked assailant on 4 December as he was walking into a hotel where the company he led was holding an investors' meeting. A nationwide search led police to Mr Mangione five days later at a McDonald's hundreds of miles away in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Police said that when they found Mr Mangione, he was in possession of a ghost gun - a gun assembled from untraceable parts - a fake ID, a passport and a handwritten document indicating "motivation and mindset".

Mr Thompson's killing ignited a wide debate about how the US healthcare system operates. Many Americans, who pay more for healthcare than people in any other country, expressed anger over what they see as unfair treatment by insurance firms.

US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in December that the rhetoric on social media in the wake of the killing was "extraordinarily alarming".

"It speaks of what is really bubbling here in this country, and unfortunately we see that manifested in violence, the domestic violent extremism that exists," he told CBS's Face the Nation.

Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --
