They "weren't thinking stereotypes" but in the original cast the only woman in the group was the pink ranger as if that wasn't also a stereotype...

K, sure, gotcha.

[-] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 64 points 2 months ago

This is what people mean when they call out implicit bias. I can believe that nobody in the writer's room explicitly said "Oh we should make the girl pink because girls like pink," but I can also believe someone made the girl pink because it "felt right" and nobody ever argued against it, and same with the black and yellow rangers. Having a diverse writer's room is a great way to prevent these implicit biases from getting passed on, but I'd honestly be surprised if Mighty Morphin Power Rangers had more than like, one white dude working on the entire story.

An example that could have come right out of a psychology textbook. Well done.

[-] klemptor@startrek.website 6 points 2 months ago

This works more for the yellow ranger. The pink ranger is clearly female in the original Japanese version - she has breasts and her uniform has a skirt. But the original Japanese yellow ranger was male: no breasts, no skirt. The US execs probably wanted 2 female rangers, but they chose yellow over red, blue, or black as the most likely "girl" color.

Is {current_year} and the fascists dogs kid show still have the only female dog in pink.

[-] misterdoctor@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

I’m sorry, are you implying Paw Patrol is both sexist and fascist or am I missing some important context?

[-] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

Paw Patrol is called fascist because of the way it champions the “thin line folks” AND pushes a kinda LISTEN TO THE AUTHORITY message.

Plus there was that one episode where paw patrol deported the dad from bluey and disappeared their neighbor.

[-] Railcar8095@lemm.ee 13 points 2 months ago

the only woman in the group

The Asian yellow ranger would like a word with you.

[-] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You know, you're right. I had this weird false memory of there originally only being three of them and that the yellow, green, and black rangers came later. I just checked Wikipedia, and she was for sure in the first episode.

[-] criitz@reddthat.com 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

When you're the asian girl your defining characteristic is "asian", and when you're the white girl your defining characteristic is "girl".

[-] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You're probably remembering the 2nd generation of the Mighty Morphin Rangers era, the one with the Thunderzords. Some of the cast got fired (yellow, black, red Rangers) and get new recruits that take their place. The pink ranger later quits and gets replaced too

[-] FilthyHookerSpit@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Yellow ranger was a dude in the original Japanese footage. That's why in the fights he didn't wear a skirt like the pink ranger.

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 11 points 2 months ago

They tormented the one gay cast member into quitting, too. Can't forget that part.

[-] DoubleSpace@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

Yep, the old blue ranger, David Yost.

[-] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

That was one of the worst revelations. I feel so bad for how he was treated. Blue ranger was one of my favorite characters in the show too.

[-] FilthyHookerSpit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I met him at a convention. He was surprisingly short (edit: google says he's 5'8. I find it hard to believe, I remember being surprised at his height. I felt he was at least 8 inches shorter than me at 6ft). Me and my buds asked him why he didn't continue with power rangers and he said he wasn't a fan of the violence and wanted to do less violent things. This was before I had found out about the homophobia. I wonder if he was being genuine about his stated reason.

[-] DoubleSpace@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

The bullying was violence.

[-] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Gatchaman and Voltron checking in with their single female representation. It was...not uncommon in Japanese team shows to have a pink member of a team that was also the only girl.

[-] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 39 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Make the Red ranger Russian and the Green ranger Irish and have them both be drunk all the time.

[-] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

And the White Power Ranger should be [insert all your favorite conservative American stereotypes here]

[-] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

Just throw in Hank Hill in a t-shirt.

[-] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

White power... ranger. Hmmmmmm

[-] Semjaza@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 2 months ago

Was unironically a joke to shout that out in my primary school playground in the UK. =(

[-] themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

Team fortress 2 lobby

I used to think the red Ranger looked kinda native and thought that was why

[-] DoubleSpace@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

This says you are partially correct.

"St. John is of Native American, German, Irish, Japanese and Spanish descent."

[-] Sibshops@lemm.ee 28 points 2 months ago

This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but if there's no stereotype being reinforced beyond a color match, it’s not automatically problematic.

I feel like if a criticism can be levied here it can also be levied to Black Panther or Barbie.

[-] tiramichu@lemm.ee 16 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

"Yellow" isn't just a colour match though, there are very significant historical prejudices with the association between 'yellow' and 'Asian'

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Peril

[-] Sibshops@lemm.ee 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Oh I completely agree that there are harmful historical associations, like the "Yellow Peril" stereotype, and that we need to be aware of it. I'm just saying that not every color/race pairing is promoting those stereotypes.

I'm wondering if using those pairings in a positive way can subvert the old associations, like how Black Panther reclaims blackness as power, or how Barbie's pink means something more empowering.

In Power Rangers, all the characters were portrayed as heroes, respected equally by the team. So while the color choices might not have been intentional, the show, for the most part, didn't show the characters in a negative or stereotypical way. That doesn’t mean we shouldn't be aware of broader sterotypes. It just may mean the it wasn’t necessarily harmful in this case.

[-] Omgboom@lemmy.zip 28 points 2 months ago

Also the white ranger was white

[-] peregrin5@lemm.ee 19 points 2 months ago

Yet they didn't make the blue ranger Andorian. Hmmm. 🤔

[-] valkyre09@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Bloody pink skins taking our jobs again.

[-] loopedcandle@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 2 months ago

Twist: all of the power rangers were actually Jeffrey Combs.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

And the pink ranger was a girl.

[-] sp3tr4l@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 months ago

He was also green.

[-] WhatSay@slrpnk.net 24 points 2 months ago

The 90s were epic, and the 90s were cringe.

[-] ech@lemm.ee 20 points 2 months ago
[-] SeaJ@lemm.ee 20 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

So out of the original five Power Rangers, three somehow just randomly fit their color stereotype? I don't buy that. They may not have consciously done it but it was absolutely done out of bias.

[-] CidVicious@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 months ago

The fact that they used a woman to play the yellow ranger while using a man for the Super Sentai footage wasn't great either.

[-] vaguerant@fedia.io 14 points 2 months ago

I think that part was pretty defensible. If they had caved to the original footage, they'd have a team of five dudes and one girl. It made sense to rebalance the ratio slightly to make it 2:1 instead of 5:1.

[-] CidVicious@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I get why they did it but..."we'll just cast an Asian woman, no one will know the difference" is a little not great. Meanwhile DIC was taking notes while working on Sailor Moon.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 17 points 2 months ago

What were they thinking when they made the White Power Ranger?

[-] WhatSay@slrpnk.net 12 points 2 months ago

They forgot to give him a pointed hat

[-] MithranArkanere@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago
[-] Fingolfinz@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

They could just apologize but instead they feed us shit

[-] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago
