I think the popular idea is that Mentos reacts with Diet Coke, not regular Coke, but apparently people mainly use diet because it doesn't leave as much of a sticky mess afterwards.
I assume they meant diet coke as it's known to be more reactive than regular coke.
According to Steve Spangler, he used Diet Coke ~~not because it’s more reactive, but~~ because it didn’t contain sugar , and thus made cleanup much easier than with regular coke.

I'd guess that it's because the diet stuff doesn't have as much corn syrup which would inhibit the foaming
