Element is a good alternative, OpenSource and federated

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 8 points 20 hours ago

soooo, honest opinions of discord users here: hows matrix nowadays? what are the other options?

[-] scholar@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago

It really depends on how you use Discord. Matrix was never trying to be a Discord alternative so for some usecases it's fine, but for a place to hang out with your friends and play video games it's not.

[-] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 2 points 17 hours ago

Element x is pretty solid but not perfect, matrix-rust-sdk needs to have desktop clients, servers need to support all the new stuff, I give element 5 years before it's a top tier messenger

[-] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 1 points 13 hours ago

I cant even get in my discord because I never get the verification email. Each time I have to contact customer support. F that platform.

[-] doodledup@lemmy.world 5 points 21 hours ago

Please give me a federated, self-hosted Discord alternative! I'm tired of these bullshit platforms.

[-] dRLY@lemmy.ml 2 points 19 hours ago

Not federated, but Revolt can be self-hosted and is very similar to Discord in the look and feel from what I have seen (I have it installed, but haven't tried getting friends to install it and am not hosting). So it could be worth looking into for folks that are used to Discord.

[-] doodledup@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

It's not federated, the developer is specifically against federation. He didn't even support self-hosting properly and officially, until the community made pullrequests in this regard themselves. Revolt is mainly made to be hosted by the developer himself. Probably just another Discord. Open-sourcing the code doesn't do anything.

[-] dRLY@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 hours ago

Good to know information, I haven't looked into it beyond installing it to see how similar it was. Still could be a starting point for some folks that have the option to self-host and more specifically have large friend groups that have issues with only liking the UI of Discord. A very specific scenario for sure, but still nice to have options if one like that were to happen.

The moment this becomes an obligation for each person, no matter what, I’ll just quit Discord. I’m tired of stuff like this.

If people want to do bad stuff, they will find a way no matter what anyway.

[-] shneancy@lemmy.world 68 points 2 days ago

there's already real time AI aging filters, once they realise this doesn't work it's going to be IDs next, i'm so sick of this bullshit

if a kid wants to find porn, they're going to find porn, no amount of laws is going to stop them, but the more laws there are the more safe websites and online spaces to explore the new feelings will be inaccessible to them, leaving only the worst possible resources to be exposed to as they discover their sexuality. people writing those laws behave as if they've entirely forgotten how it was to be a teen, nor have met a teen in decades

[-] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 32 points 2 days ago

I mean at least in the US the median congressional age is 64.7 so yeah gramps doesn't remember being that age much less having internet access. Doesn't consider that you can't find porn mags in the woods anymore.

[-] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 12 points 2 days ago

And "porn" means anything pro LGBT

[-] shneancy@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

people downvoting you need some more context i believe

conservative leadership's bigotry isn't just all yelling about gay frogs, there's subtlety to some of their tactics. Two things are happening at once here - banning of sexual things, harsher punishments for sexual offenders, broadening the definition of what sexual offences even are, and sexualisation of LGBTQ folks, fearmongering, "think of the children", implications that transgender people are all perverts (why else would bathrooms or drag queens story times be such big issues?). queer people are being pushed back into the margins, just their mere existence is being pushed to be viewed as "erotic" and "inappropriate for children"

though obviously LGBTQ people are not porn, i hope that goes without saying, the same people who want to ban porn are the ones working very hard to paint queer people as somehow innately "adult only"

Out of curiosity, why go out of your way to not capitalize correctly? Like 'I' has to be easiest in any autocorrect.

[-] shneancy@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

i don't have autocorrect on, i also don't subscribe to the idea that there is a "correct" way to speak or write, languages are tools used for communication, if you can understand me without effort then i used the tool successfully

i do capitalise things when it matters, for various reasons; to make a sentence easier to read, to show respect, to avoid a word being confused for a typo. but overall i just like the look of small letters better

[-] Sibyls@lemmy.ml 0 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Very peculiar perspective denying the already established language standards of punctuation and capitalization... Autocorrect exists to show you the "corect" way.

For anyone raised in a standard education system, there is effort to read comments like that. We've learned to pause, exclaim, incur emotion, and apply tension, all through punctuation and capitalization. Your comments are read as breathless long-winded statements for those of us who still subscribe to language standards..

Thanks for the response, though.

[-] shneancy@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

that's how my thoughts sound, that's how i like my writing to look, i don't care if not everyone likes that, you're allowed to not like things

[-] Sibyls@lemmy.ml 0 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Yep never said otherwise.. lol and you did say you cared in your first reply but I can see you don't follow logic too well so I'll leave it at that.

[-] shneancy@lemmy.world 0 points 10 hours ago

💀 i care to be understood, and since we're talking that's clearly not an issue. i do not care if you like how i type. you can dislike things for no reason it's fine, it's not criminal to simply not like something, like how i dislike how you're being rude to me right now

why are you insulting me over your dislike of how i choose to write words and form sentences? how is my logic at fault when i don't capitalise "i" or use a comma instead of a full stop? i don't lack the ability to write "properly", this is a style i chose because i like it, because it's the closest to how my thoughts flow and to me it's aesthetically pleasing

[-] Sibyls@lemmy.ml 0 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

It's simple. You said as long as there isn't effort for the reader, you dont mind. So you care.

Then you said you don't care about the reader.

Make up your mind? That's where your logic fails. But it's typical in online forums like this. People spend all day here.

Again, I never said you couldn't type that way. I'm not sure why you keep responding as if I did.

[-] shneancy@lemmy.world 0 points 7 hours ago

it's literally a skill issue if lack of capitalisation and imperfect punctuation is something that noticeably slows down the speed at which you process information

1f 1 7yp3d |1k3 7h15 1'd und3r574nd y0u s331ng 4 f|4w 1n my |0g1c

but i don't, so your insults are quite frankly only indicative of your personality i'm afraid. jeez, get your head out of your ass

[-] Sibyls@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 hours ago

The fact you can't address the point says everything.

[-] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 35 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

For a brief moment, I had a a FB/Instagram account for testing purposes. After about a week, Meta started asking to see my face on camera. Needless to say, that experiment hit a brick wall.

I was just following and liking stuff here and there. Didn’t even post anything, but apparently that was suspicious enough for Meta.

Controversially, I cheer on the quickening of the inshitification of Discord. The sooner more folks are convinced to move away from that place, the better. I hope for a return to indexable and searchable old school forums (or their modern equivalents—Discourse is so nice).

[-] absquatulate@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago

Problem is folks won't move, they're too entrenched. Look at twitter, it's still going ok despite having been a cesspit for years now. Or reddit, where some moved, but they moved to yet another enshittified platform: Discord. The amount of crap people ( especially the ones on discord ) will put up with is immense before they even consider switching.

Discord was shit from the beginning. Enshitification is useless here.

Sadly parts of my social group are currently migrating to discord.

Future headline: “Discord users begin testing Discord alternatives”

[-] Sunsofold@lemmings.world 20 points 2 days ago

Already started. Revolt seems like it could be a near 1 to 1 replacement soon.

Cool. I'm out then.

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

facebook does the same thing, except also requires a photo ID too. it seems alot right wingers have migrated to these 2 platforms so they can control narratives better, better off staying away from these platforms.

[-] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

How am I going to rip on them until they have aneurysms if I'm not on there too?

[-] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 12 points 2 days ago

The downfall of discord

[-] Kualdir@feddit.nl 38 points 2 days ago

Reminder that we have a european alternative called Revolt we can always switch to!

Another alternative is Element for chatting and Teamspeak for Calls/Screenshare!

[-] millie@beehaw.org 3 points 1 day ago

Element really needs to get push to talk. It's an incredibly basic feature to be missing, and for me personally and I'm sure others the lack of it is a deal breaker.

Need alternatives to have built-in, easy to use screenshare with audio. And of course great noise filtering on voice chats.
