I think it's less of a "it's not impressive he did" and more of a "im not sure anything could have stopped him". He very clearly deeply loved her, and I really doubt he's particularly worried about the end potentially coming a tad bit sooner at this point.

I mean, the pilot is one of the weaker episodes in the series. They hadn't quite figured out what they wanted to do with the characters.
