I have a feeling even the bottom 10% of Europeans are still contributing more than the bottom 10% of someone in India or Botswana. This Wikipedia page says that the average EU citizen contributes 117% of the global average carbon emissions (for comparison Canada is 307% and USA is 285%).

People are talking about privacy but the big reason is that it gives you, the owner, control over everything quickly without ads or other uneeded stuff. We are so used to apps being optomized for revenue and not being interoperable with other services that it's easy to forget the single biggest advantage of computers which is that programs and apps can work together quickly and quietly and in the background. Companies provide products, self-hosting provides tools.

Great point, absolutely! I don't subscribe to the "dead internet theory" but my time on the Fediverse has also convinced me that all of the corporate platform's traffic numbers are almost certainly heavily inflated (probably to justify higher ad prices).
