Firstly it gives Poilievre an honest opportunity to contribute. People want to see everyone working together, so by letting Poilievre in right away he's giving him a chance to temper the rhetoric and get work done. And if he doesn't temper the rhetoric, it's likely to work in Carney's favour. If he's seen as obstructing, it will not look good for him. It seems like a win-win-win... It looks like fair dealing, if Poilievre comes to the table honestly it works for Carney, if he doesn't it works for Carney as well. It's good politics that is both strategic in the way it encourages good cooperation and has good optics around fairness.

Secondly, the elephant in the room is the separation nonsense. Poilievre is running for a seat in the heart of separatist country, and with the separation rhetoric ramping up, better to have Poilievre - who is ideologically tied to Smith and will be representing Alberta - in the public eye as soon as possible, so he can wear this garbage. After all, Smith seems to be adept at causing no end of hassle for Poilievre. Best to put him front and centre as soon as possible so he is forced to respond to it.

This is just one of thousands of examples of immense disrespect. And his cult follows him along through everything.

I'm all seriousness, if you find this appealing, would you not be happier if you just move there? If you have no allegiance to this country, please be respectful, have some dignity, and don't actively try to ruin it for the rest of us. Stop trying to sabotage this country by actively undermining it.

Not really clear where your position is, but I will make my position clear: We all see where right wing populism ends up just by looking south of us. It's a disaster. Copying that in this moment is outright idiocy. Picking the right wing populist who has never been on the right side of an issue and who mimics the exact policy beats of the Republicans is a surefire way to go down the same path. We need to tell the Conservatives to drop their culture war crazies, stop fighting against experts, stop trying to remove rights from people, and focus on real solutions to real problems.

The framework that is built from the oppression of women, and the challenges that arise from that, does not represent the lived experiences, challenges, or values of men. All too often it diminishes these. To move forward in a spirit of mutual understanding requires a recognition of what matters to men; i.e., what provides purpose and value.

I feel that you may be misunderstanding me. This is exactly about tolerance and acceptance - including acceptance that men and women have different lived experiences that are founded on different fundamental principles of what is important and what provides purpose. Is it really so difficult to accept that men might find purpose or value that differs from women? I don't believe there is harm in acknowledging that, and respecting a healthy understanding of that difference.

The problem is that something is missing and it's being filled by angry reactionaries and right wing grifters who prey on the particular insecurities of young men, specifically insecurities around masculine values.

What's missing is a foundational framework for understanding the male experience as distinct yet coequal to feminist theory. A framework that seeks to promote a balanced, respectful dialogue by articulating unique structures, values, and challenges faced by men, in order to offer a lens through which male identity, struggle, and transformation can be understood on their own terms, while upholding - acknowledging - the progress and insights of feminism.

These men feel like they don't have purpose or identity. They need a framework, but unfortunately efforts to define and build such a framework are often hijacked by extremists that just hate women and minorities. Like we see now.

This makes me unreasonably angry.

Any assumption of good faith discussions with her or her supporters should be abandoned. In my mind this cements them as outright traitors. We need to kick American oil interests out of our country, immediately. This is what they have wrought. I don't give a dry fuck what Smith, the UCP and all the other Alberta separatists think of this proposal. They should be considered criminals and treated accordingly.

Frankly the Conservatives had better come out strong against this, or they will forever be the party of treason to their country. This is inexcusable. I don't care what you think about policy...if you believe this is okay, you can shut the fuck up about what you think is good for the country because you have no interest in the country itself.

Big tough oil men turn into limpwristed traitors who knuckle under when Trump calls to them. Fucking embarrassing.

Nationalize the oil already. Get the foreign corporations and their brain dead lackeys out.

[-] RaskolnikovsAxe@lemmy.ca 28 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Oh please fuck right off with this apologist bullshit.

I don't care what people think, and it wouldn't matter if I did, as long as they keep their treasonous sympathies in their own head.

The moment they voice it or act on it, then it becomes expression. And freedom of expression does not extend to treasonous or seditious speech or action, as it's defined in the criminal code.

And anyway, where freedom of expression applies, it only protects against government suppression or legal repercussions. It has nothing to say about me making their lives miserable and making sure everyone knows they're treasonous Yank sympathizers and just generally untrustworthy pieces of shit. And these people know that which is why they rarely make their views known publicly.

Well that, and they know that if they out themselves they'll be the first up against the wall if shit gets ugly.

The problem is that there is a not-insignificant number of people that want the US to annex Canada.

In the US, about 15% of Trump voters would support annexation of Canada, even if Canada didn't want it. That's about 1 in 7.

https://vancouversun.com/news/trump-51st-state-most-americans-have-no-interest-in-canada-annex

The disturbing thing is that about 18% of Canadian Conservatives would support annexation. That's almost 1 in 5. Most of us know five Conservatives, so chances are you know someone who is essentially a traitor. I think Conservative supporters need to be aware that this is the company they keep.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/article/large-majority-of-canadians-reject-trumps-annexation-overtures-poll-suggests/

[-] RaskolnikovsAxe@lemmy.ca 45 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Why bother paying anything? Let it go to court. Threatening annexation should fall under some kind of hostilities clause, national security clause, or force majeure clause. Anyway who's going to collect?

The US government can pay ~~MD~~ Lockheed, they're the ones who threatened annexation.

Edit... Fixed above, not sure why I had MacDonell Douglas on my mind...strange substitution for a company that no longer exists under that name.

According to Reuters, Trump is preparing to remove legal status for 240000 Ukrainian immigrants, following which they will likely be deported back to a war zone.

The US continues her slide into global irrelevance, abandoning respect for democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.

It is the duty of the countries that continue to respect democracy and human rights, including Canada, to prevent these people from being forced back into a war torn country.

Edit Still getting the hang of this, created this post without the link to Reuters. Apologies, link added.

This is one sample visit to the conservative subreddit. It's an appalling example of the impact of disinformation. When you need to be reminded of who the enemy is and what they think, visit here. You will see that there is no gratitude or mutual respect, and there never was. There was never any concept of mutual benefit. And now, with Trump leading the cult, there truly is no depth to which they won't go, and no decisions from Trump that won't be retroactively justified.

These people are dangerous, and they don't give a shit about any alliances, friendship or partnership. And they control the levers of power.

Edit to add a screenshot. Not sure how to add more, but it doesn't get any better as you go deeper. What's clear is that this relationship is over, and we need to move on.

[-] RaskolnikovsAxe@lemmy.ca 37 points 4 months ago

Goddamn right we should. Take the French up on the offer to build the Rafale here. Or the Swedes. And get a few demo units for short term.

Fuck 'em on any cancellation fees too. Consider it partial compensation for the ridiculous trade war.

Care to expand on this?

Edit: Nvm I see your post history. You can fuck right off, you treasonous Yank sympathizer. Best you get out before you're put out.

On a related topic, Nazi lives don't matter.

At the first Trump cabinet meeting, he stated his intentions clearly. He restated blatant lies and disinformation, and he won't really be questioned on it from the press or from any US politicians. The US is the enemy of Canada and should be understood as such. Take heed of his treatment of Ukraine - when he noted that they would lose the war without US help - and consider what he will propose when he uses the same argument on us. He makes it very clear in the video.

And very carefully consider which of our political leaders will stand up to Trump when he makes the argument that we need American military in our country to protect us.

You can't spell hatred without red hat.

(I can't take credit for this, I saw this comment on this same story elsewhere, and I thought it was so obvious that I can't believe it isn't more widespread)

Twist ending: Trump comes out as the ultimate leftist neoglobalist. His entire life has been dedicated to cultivating the most unabashed narcissistic piss baby entitled con man personality, as a front, just so he can convince America to share its wealth and power, collapse American hegemony, and permanently destroy conservatism. He's the only one that has the special Yank whisperer powers to convince an entire nation of dumbfucks to act against their own self interest.

At this point nothing would surprise me.

Being charitable... I'm not sure this is the best messaging he can go with. He doesn't seem to realize it's over. Most of us are finished with the US and we can't trust them at this point. He needs to start standing up for Canada and presenting a message of strength, independence and unity... Not continuing to offer platitudes and extending olive branches. Frankly, it looks weak, and it doesn't instill any trust that he will do what's necessary when the time comes.

He finishes off with a show of strength that hits all the right notes, but when it comes after the weaselly opening it just seems like too little, too late.

Billionaires should not exist. You don't get to be a billionaire without exploiting people - for that matter once you get over about 10M you're probably stepping on people, or exploiting systems, in order to continue growing your wealth. And why, exactly? It's a sickness that gets worse the richer someone gets. It's been studied and confirmed that people who have excessive wealth convince themselves that they deserve it, they earned it individually, and that they are special and more valuable than others. So instead of riding off into the sunset, they feed their addiction by buying outsized and unearned power in order to shape the laws so that they can make more money. Just fuck off already - you won at capitalism, now get the fuck out of the way and stop screwing over everyone else and making our lives miserable.

Beyond 100M we should just take it all for the state. 100% tax rate. If you want to keep earning beyond that, then great, you will have the glory of contributing to the public good.

But since billionaires have convinced idiots to advocate against the idiots' own interest, and argue that the billionaires can't be constrained in any way, then this will never happen in the current social context. So next best thing is to do as Bill says. Put the fear of God into them.
