I’m not saying that magically getting everyone to know who they should vote for and then show up to the polls is feasible, just that refusing to participate because the system’s ‘broken’ is what the system wants and how it makes sure it keeps doing the things it does

Making it difficult to vote is a reason it's designed to fail, but it's very possibly the least impactful.

Even if everyone participates, there are still dozens of ways in which capital restricts the options/neuters governance against the interests of the working class. Historically, it has almost never been turnout that drives progress, but dedicated, persistent, and quite often violent action by a relatively small number of actors. Nearly all of our basic labor rights came not from the working-class voter turnout but by armed protest and seizure of capital and infrastructure. Even when representation overwhelmingly 'supports' reform, the pressures of capital dis-incentivize regulation if they can avoid it (else they catch the blowback from unhappy capitalists, who quite literally control the nation's productive capacity and resources) - it isn't until the working class shows their willingness to disrupt the flow of profit that true progress is made.

I understood your whole comment, but my point isn't event just that our system is designed to prevent participation, it's also designed to prevent populist movements from making progress to begin with. "The system doesn't want you to participate" is only a very small part of the story - it also does not need to listen to the popular will unless it's backed by an implicit threat of violence.

I'm not even telling you not to vote, just that voting alone will never be enough, not even with total participation - especially when we have already reached the point in capitalist decay where fascism has taken control of governance. You cannot vote your way out of fascism, and the sooner people realize this the sooner people will stop being content with merely voting.

Saw this on the yepowertrippingmods

I think this was a reasonable bait-provoked response. You can't go into another community and troll them about their moderation policy and expect not to get booted

When you hold up shit like this it makes it seem like you're just drama farming

Our economy is now tanking because of these fools

Funny how these accusations were relatively absent for the last three months while visa and green card holders were shipped off to labor camps in El Salvador, but as soon as Trump does some shit to tank the economy, that's when the knives come out

Liberals will defend the same problematic capital structures as republicans - change my mind.

The uncomfortable reality is that you aren’t gonna solve your country’s problems in the voting booths

Until the majority of liberals in our country realize this, it's doubtful our problems will be solved at all

Are we really still doing this?

Honestly it seems like liberals hate their own base more than the reactionaries they are supposedly the opposition to

Actually that tracks, since most of the DNC has been flirting with reactionary commentators and billionaires while actively criticizing the one part of their party actually building momentum

I absolutely adore this artist. I guess he played on-label in a eponymously named band called 'Welles' for a while probably 10 years ago, but it never really took off and had a distinctly different sound. Last I checked their most popular song on yt only had ~100k views, most of them significantly less.

That makes it so much more exciting that he's getting so much traction now without a label, and while writing songs that so obviously come from a place of earnest feeling. I saw an interview with him a couple weeks ago where he said he had gone home after touring with his old band and thought he was gonna quit music altogether, but came back to it after his dad had a heart-attack. It's really only been a year since then, writing and playing songs on tiktok/yt until eventually getting enough attention that he put together 2 albums and started selling out shows.

I'm just so hyped for the guy - he played a few shows in my neck of the woods but they sold out so damn fast I wasn't able to see him play. On his new album I really like 'Rocket Man' and 'War is a God', but the whole thing is honestly so good. His other album 'Helles Welles' has all of the more pointed topical songs like 'Fat' and 'Genocide Cake', which are also bangers.

Him being un-signed makes me happy to have bought both of his albums, I can't recommend them enough.

The longer I'm on lemmy, the more I realize just how dumb reddit user controls are

When I was on reddit, it seemed to matter so much how old your account was on any given subreddit, but now i realize it's extraordinarily bad opsec to have a single account.

All this to say: there being a single point of authority that can issue IP bans and shadowblocks and generally have control over user identity information is just so needlessly stupid.

YDI.

Not because you're wrong about consolidating communities, and not even because you were trying to get people to move to the other comm; but because you're doing it in the least communal and democratic way possible, and for your disregard for the mod team and community's collective intent. I think the mod team handled this pretty well.

These kinds of crusades are antithetical to the spirit of the fediverse, and I really wish this community didn't attract so many Don Quixote-types fighting windmills.

They want Europe to feel threatened so that we come to them for help where they can put on the mask of protector when in reality they want to turn the entire world in the dystopian shitshow they have

Couldnt this just as easily be about the US?

If he was less supportive of Israel and law enforcement I'd be more excited about this.

Honestly there isn't anyone left in the party that I'm happy with - even AOC started transitioning into radlib territory.

I said that dragonfucker wasn't a gender, because dragons don't exist

OK but you can see how this statement breaks their rules on gatekeeping the use of pronouns, right?

... for the same sentiment that got you banned

You're not upset that a trans user got banned, you're upset you got yourself banned and are pointing to a trans user as a shield against anti-trans accusations

You're digging the hole deeper. Just let it go.
