My short commentary on this:

A collapse of the Barzani-led Kurdistan Regional Government with the return of the Federal Government to Iraqi Kurdistan would be a net-positive for the region. The KRG colludes with Israel and the US, oppresses all revolutionary activity, and is a neoliberal hellhole with no redeeming qualities unlike Rojava. They are only good at building nice apartment buildings and trafficking women, they can't even pay salaries to their teachers and sanitary workers. Anything that breaks this separatist project is good.

To change the mood a bit, some news from our favourite hellscape on earth, Ukraine.

  • Russians have established a sizable buffer zone in Sumy Oblast, and are now just ~20km from Sumy City itself. They definitely won't go for the city though, the plan seems to be to entrench in the massive forest next to the city and start harassing AFU groupings inside the city with smaller drones.

  • Russians have officially crossed into Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, in the direction of the town of Novopavlivka. Entering Dnipropetrovsk means that Russians can now outflank the bigger Ukrainian fortifications in the south from both the north and the east, which will be vital if Russia ever goes on the offensive in the Zaporozhye direction.

  • The noose around both Konstantinivka and Pokrovsk-Myrnograd is getting tighter and tighter after a smaller AFU collapse in the section in between the cities. The summer will likely see a Russian offensive towards Rodynske or Bilytske north of Pokrovsk, and Toretske north of Konstantinivka, which will effectively put both cities under operational encirclement with no actual roads for resupply.

  • Manpower issues for the AFU in general are becoming very obvious at this stage, and they're unable to plug all holes at once like they could a few months ago. They managed to stop the bleeding near Lyman a few weeks ago, but that came with the cost of losing significant ground near Toretsk, Siversk, Konstantinivka and in the north near Sumy. Russians are now doing small pushes across the whole front except Kherson and north of Kharkov, which is just too much for the AFU to handle. To stop the breakthrough near Pokrovsk a few months ago, they rotated some of the units that were active in the former Kursk occupied zone. The result was that Russian advances slowed down near Pokrovsk, but Russians were suddenly able to seize an important chunk of the Kursk-Sumy border region.

The current Iranian attack seems to be a combo of two different Shahed variants and cruise missiles according to nerds on Arab twitter. They're saying that Iran is probably preparing a big ballistic missile attack, but the weaker initial package will keep Israeli air defences busy until the ballistic missiles are launched in an hour or so. I don't know much about the logistics of missile attacks, but the logic sounds reasonable to me.

Well yeah, this shit is so goofy and happens every single year. So basically Muslims throughout history have been following the moon for our lunar calendar by doing moon sighting every month. They see a fresh crescent = new month starts tomorrow, they don't see a fresh crescent = month starts one extra day later. Well humans figured out a few hundred years ago that one can do mathematical calculations to estimate the state of that crescent. Islamic scholars then disagreed if mathematical calculations and even sightings using telescopes count as valid evidence for the new crescent. Saudis a few years ago decided to fully switch to calculations, but to not upset the more conservative parts of the Islamic world, they just make up random eyesight evidence every single time. It was scientifically impossible for any person in the Arabian peninsula to actually see the crescent on Saturday, but that didn't stop the Saudis and a few other countries from announcing the end of Ramadan and the start of Eid on Sunday anyway. Most Islamic countries including Egypt, Iraq, Syria and Iran didn't celebrate Eid on Sunday and waited until today. My wife's family celebrated today too, so our real gathering had to wait until today lol.

Baathism definitely goes into the trashcan of history now, parasitic ideology that took Nasser's beautiful pan-Arab socialism and turned it into father and failson hereditary dictatorship. I can't predict anything about the future right now, but I hope Jolani keeps behaving well.

It hasn't been so over for Ukraine since the initial weeks of the SMO. According to good Telegram sources, Russians have now rapidly advanced in Selydove, entered Myrnograd, and it seems like the entirety of Grodovka is gone. On paper, Selydove and Grodovka should be the places where the Ukrainians try to mount a final defence and try to slow down the RF before having the big battles in Pokrovsk, Myrnograd and later Kurakhove. But the whole defence has collapsed again for the third time in less than 48 hours. Russia already entering Myrnograd is insane progress for even the most optimistic Russian Telegrammer in the world, this battle wasn't even expected before spring 2025.

Just wanted to share a funny Libya/Gaddafi/Green Book story from my Syrian-Lebanese communist uncle. When my uncle was studying engineering in the USSR in the 80s, his roommate and best friend was an Iraqi guy from a relatively poor family who also got a grant to go study in the USSR. The Iraqi government back under Baathism used to give thousands of grants to young Iraqis to go study in mainly Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and the USSR. This guy was Shia muslim, from a religious family with secret Persian ancestry that my uncle only found out recently about, when talking to his old friend, who kept it hidden all this time.

Anyway, this guy's family get into a conflict with a local Baath Party office because of some religious incident, which snowballs into this guy's brothers getting arrested. The Baath dudes also cancelled my uncle's friend's grant in the USSR, which was around 200 USD at that time. Suddenly he's dirt poor, with half his family in prison in Iraq. He decided to toughen up and survive the situation, as he needed to stay in the USSR to avoid going back to Iraq without a degree and then drafted for the Iraq-Iran War.

When his situation worsens later and he starts to starve with no money, he comes up with a master plan. Libya had awful relations with Saddam's Iraq in the 80s, so this guy showed up at the Libyan Embassy in Moscow and presented himself as an Iraqi dissenter that likes the Libyan system. A week later they call him and tell him to come to the embassy. They give him nearly $1000 in cash and a whole box full with copies of Gaddafi's Green Book, on the condition that he promotes the book to other Iraqis. He accepts the offer of course and survives excellently on that money until the Iraqis reapprove his grant. He then actually worked in Libya for a few years, and he was directly contacted by his local Libyan embassy because his name had been registered as a "potential engineer" in a list somewhere.
