The only way this story could be more American was if it had been a child dolphin, in a public school.

Maybe not right now, but when shareholders start demanding action over NSFW subs or subs that discuss illegal activities or subs that discuss the evils of capitalism or subs that just aren't profitable and those subs start getting shuttered, then they will.

I'm not American but what's happening in the US and what will happen when/if Trump gets re-elected definitely worries me. It's difficult not to sound overly dramatic or hyperbolic about the situation but it really does feel like the US is uncomfortably close right now to a christofascist state. And if you just rolled your eyes at that word, take a look at who's currently second in line to the US presidency.

If Trump does win, I really fear for American democracy. Do you really think a man who encouraged an armed insurrection to support a subversion of an election will pause to think twice about removing the few rights large sections of America currently have? And if the process prevents him, do you think he'd think twice about dismantling the process? At gun point if necessary?

Before you get annoyed with Foster over a cherry picked BBC article, read the much more in depth Guardian piece they lifted quotes from. It'll give you much more context.

Today in bizzaroworld, asking for context demonstrates bias and unfounded opinion.

It's not solely about the fediverse, but it is mentioned.

Switched to LMDE and love it (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

No hate to Ubuntu LTS (my old OS) as I think for an entry to Linux, it's about the best there is, and then I just got used to it and then I started getting more and more annoyed with Snaps.

FFWD a couple of years and I decided to switch to Mint but I wanted something that was entirely free of Snaps, not just blocked, so LMDE seemed the best fit. I get all the good bits of Mint without the Canonical enforced stuff. It's been running a week now and after plenty of tweaks (installing Gnome for example) looks and feels exactly how I wanted it without interference from Canonical.

The link goes to this users Mastodon post on the subject. I'm going to copy part of the text of his post without having to post the Threads post they were shown. Click through if you want to see for yourself, avoid if such things are upsetting to you.

"This was a post promoted to me from within Instagram to try and get me to use threads. Ill say that again: this is the promotional content shown to non-threads users as an inducement to join threads."

If you do click through to the Mastodon thread, you'll see several other people confirming they've seen the same or similar posts promoting Threads.

I've said the same thing in comments to other Threads related posts in this community but I'm going to say it again; didn't we create and use fediverse software like Mastodon, Lemmy, PixelFed etc in large part to escape the constant hate-baiting and algorithmic manipulation of companies like Meta? Why are so many in the fediverse prepared to throw their fellow fediverse users under the bus by exposing them to a company and a set of users who not only say these things and not only allow them to be said but actually use them as a promotional tool to encourage more people onto Threads?

If Threads was a fediverse instance, it would've been defederated from by just about everyone by now. Why are some people bending over backwards to give Meta a free pass?

'Wait and see' I hear people say. I can already see.

Started in mid November and despite repeated requests from Tuta(nota) and reassurances from MS, it's still happening and MS have gone silent on the subject.

I've got a mate whos a big fan of Bourbon. He's tried all the standard brands like Buffalo Trace, JD, Jim Beam and Wild Turkey.

I want to get him a bottle for Xmas of something he might not have tried before, something I can say was recommended by Americans as a good bourbon. Doesn't need to be some weird flavour like Red Stag, just old fashioned American bourbon that maybe flies under the radar in other countries.

I don't know if this is 100% strictly privacy related but I think it does fall in the sphere of protecting one's right to express oneself privately.

"Government officials have drawn up deeply controversial proposals to broaden the definition of extremism to include anyone who “undermines” the country’s institutions and its values, according to documents seen by the Observer.

The new definition, prepared by civil servants working for cabinet minister Michael Gove, is fiercely opposed by a cohort of officials who fear legitimate groups and individuals will be branded extremists.

The proposals have provoked a furious response from civil rights groups with some warning it risks “criminalising dissent”, and would significantly suppress freedom of expression."

It's dystopian shit like this that is beginning to make me despair of what my country will be in 10 years time.

The passing of the online safety bill, this sort of shit, the recent legislation making it more and more difficult to protest anything, the massive expansion of facial recognition cameras everywhere. We're on the edge of a bad period I think.

Recently a European Court has judged that Meta's way of collecting and using people's data in Europe has been in violation of privacy regulations between 2018 and 2023. Now Meta announced an option of Facebook and Instagram without personalized ads for 120 euros per year. European users would have the option to pay or agree to personalized ads. But is your right to privacy for sale? Let's find out!

The code on the card is covered so Amazon might know you use Mullvad but they have no way of knowing what your account is.

Mullvad know your acct but they have no way of knowing how it is you paid other than maybe it being a scratchcard which they don't track anyway.

Didn't really have a choice:

...Regrettably individuals have frequently used this feature to host undesirable content and malicious services from ports that are forwarded from our VPN servers. This has led to law enforcement contacting us, our IPs getting blacklisted, and hosting providers cancelling us.

Blog post

Big issue there is hosting providers cancelling them. Can't operate a business without that.

They won't need to. Signal, WhatsApp, Session and iMessage (Apple) have already said they'll withdraw their products from the UK market. Meta are making similar noises regarding Facebook Messenger.

Using 'female' in that context does give off, at best, vibes of someone who doesn't have much contact with women. Feels like someone classifying an unfamiliar species, rather than referring to an actual person.
