As is the case with everything published by Malaysiakini, the BM/Malay version is not paywalled and that's what I linked to. If you have an active subscription with them, you can view their full articles in English and Chinese. That said, they left the quiz and poll sections open for everyone to interact with. Check that out to find out what's in store for you this budget and vote up or down selected policies listed by the News Lab team.

Given how little coverage this community has on this year's budget (at the moment), and how little info the government has provided in the few days after Anwar tabled the budget, the infographics that I linked provide much-needed context. In it, these points are addressed:

  • How the government plans to handle the burgeoning subsidies and make them more targeted
  • How the debt-to-GDP ratio look like for next year, and plans to bring it down to 60% in stages
  • How the government increase revenue when contribution from petroleum is expected to drop next year
  • How allocations to various ministries differ between Budget 2023 and 2024
  • How expenditures across various sectors differ between five administrations (Najib to Anwar)

There may be more sections added to this news feature as the new week starts. I'll update the points above if needed. What do you think about Budget 2024? Share your thoughts below.

It is held every 10 October, and this year happens to be the organizer's (World Federation for Mental Health) 75th anniversary.

WFMH has an official site about this year's Mental Health Day.

Some GSC theatres are running "old" Warner Brothers' titles, which currently is Interstellar with the prefix WB100. This is the article I found that explained it quite well, and here's the poll posted on FB in May 2023 with their initial shortlist of films.

I have updated the post on data.gov.my dashboards after they added new datasets for the public to explore. This time, it's about ridership information for Rapid and KTMB services, or basically our country's main companies for public transport.

That's not all; their data catalogue page also feature total trips taken on a particular line/service. There are some missing data that hopefully will be added in the future, such as:

  • Total trips for other KTMB services, like Komuter for Central Sector.
  • Station-to-station ridership for Putrajaya Line, aka MRT2.

The URL I linked for this post shows ridership data between Bandaraya and Masjid Jamek stations on the Ampang Line. I picked this because if you've not heard the news, the elevated section between these stations had structural problems, so services between the two stations have been suspended since late January 2023. Currently, trains still run between Bandaraya and Sentul Timur terminal (6 stations cut off from the rest of Ampang Line), and a dedicated bus line run between Masjid Jamek and Bandaraya.

I was expecting 0 ridership data between the two stations from February 2023 onwards, but it wasn't zero. It was up to double digit in a month, perhaps due to rail staffs moving in between. Train cars still have to occasionally move through the damaged viaduct section to replace the running stock that service the 6 cut-off stations (there's no depot after/at Sentul Timur).

If you have time, you can also explore ridership from Masjid Jamek (AG07) to AG05..AG01, or Bandaraya (AG06) to any stations except AG01 to AG05. My guess is there are residual data that indicate staff movements. Let me know if you find clean zero data for the combination above. According to RapidKL's latest press release on the matter, train service between AG06 and AG07 should resume mid-October 2023. We shall see by then.

If you have seen MoH's latest Covid dashboards before, then these dashboards apply the same UX on data from other govt agencies.

Previously these data are made public but with rather antiquated ways of displaying and utilizing the numbers. I felt the current design is more appealing to a broader audience, although some quotes and quips they pepper throughout the dashboard prefaces might be overdone.

There are a few upcoming dashboards like:

  • 9 November 2023 (Thursday), Baby Name Popularity lets you explore the popularity of any Malaysian name. Yeah they pushed the ETA by another four weeks wtf.
  • Available since 22 September 2023 (Friday), explore ridership from any origin to any destination on Rapid Bus and Rail services, at daily frequency.
  • Also available the same day, explore ridership from any origin to any destination on KTMB-operated services at daily frequency, based on data from KTM Integrated Ticketing System (KITS).
  • "On 14th Sep, look out for the release of daily births data, daily rainfall and temperature data, as well as granular income tax data!" As far as I know these dashboards were live a day before, if not earlier. EDIT: Daily births here, placed under "Data Catalogue" which is a separate category to the dashboard page I linked for this post.

Hope you have fun exploring these dashboards. Do share any interesting insights or bugs you encounter (not a dev, don't @ me).

Video of Aegean Paradise track starting 19 August 2023 morning, 160 seconds

Related to my Doulos Hope post recently, there's another ship parked at Swettenham Pier, which was this one.

It apparently does two trips a day to "nowhere", but when I check today it is heading to Satun.

Edit: was trying out better ways to format the post.

Another clue i got is from Hop On Hop Off bus schedule.

Their daytime routes go along Jalan Raja (Stop 11 to Stop 12) but ends at 6pm. Starting 8pm there is a single night tour that don't follow the day route, but it does stop at "River of Life/Merdeka Square" for photos. Meaning the bus turn into Leboh Pasar Besar if Jalan Raja is closed for vehicular traffic (besides I don't think Dataran Merdeka area is particularly photogenic at night).

My guess is they barricade starting from 8pm or before Maghrib at 7pm, then reopen early morning like 6am if it's not Car Free Sunday. I've seen articles about DBKL plans to close certain roads as test runs to eventually only allow pedestrian traffic at all times, but no details.

Summary on BFM 6pm-to-7:30 discussion about youth vote (audio 56 mins). They invited 2 Malaysiakini journalists who worked on the Newslab feature on whether the green wave was powered by the youth (monyet.cc post), and also another guest professor who is a uni lecturer to understand this topic.

  • MKini has data down to polling districts (scroll to "Who did your neighbours vote for?"). They encourage readers to understand how the oldest and youngest vote, since their choices are drowned out when lumped together in the final results. However they acknowledged the data and article they presented can be overwhelming. What they found can be summarised in the next section, which I combined with the guest prof opinions.

  • Youth votes will largely follow GE15 trend. The youth don't favour the older BN, went through Sheraton move (-ve for PH), Covid lockdown (+ve for PN) and gig economy, which factors into their vote preferences. Urban-rural, education, employment, and income levels seem to be secondary factors, compared to recent politics and policies. They prefer a strong figure to lead the country/state to stability and look after their rights (not so much youth rights, but the preferential treatment kind).

  • Part 1 of MKini election simulator was discussed on BFM here (audio 50 mins).

Edit: Added relevant links.

A bit of a rant and off-topic, but I tried 7E-brand canned coffee and it was super sweet.

23.3g sugar in 240ml. Maybe some fruit/vegetable juices can top that.

After that Crackhouse was shut "indefinitely". Kinda feel bad for them but it is what it is.

Apparently it was not the same offensive materials as Siti Nuramira was charged for, as her show was on 4 June 2022.

Rizal the co-owner of Crackhouse was charged for videos of his own stand-up routines which were shared to social media between 4 and 6 July 2022. I don't know what the content was about, though.

Also TIL The Istana in Singapore is serving a similar purpose as the president's official residence, and was completed a year (or less) before The Astana began construction.

Seems more reasonable than building a flagpole, but we don't know their budget on the new Astana yet.

Grab and Boost employs a points system, but you earn them by scanning their platform's QR instead of DuitNow QR. Expect fewer perks as a payment platform matures, unless they're trying to pull you back because you rarely use their app.
