Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.
Rules:
-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --
-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --
-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --
-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --
-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--
-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--
-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --
-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --
Seems more likely we'll just ban Chinese AI services like we've done with their cars.
I know you can just download their model, but most people won't do that.
You can't just ban OpenSource. Anyone company/person can just copy the code and use it. Profitable A. I in the U.S is finished. All it took is 6 million to train and a Chinese tech wizard.
It won't put up with your racist bullshit?
I won't reply to them because the comment was removed but it's so funny that they think the "censorship" matters at all. My sibling in Christ, they're trying to write code for web services with these things, not write an article for the NYT! Who cares what these models say about Tiananmen or Taiwan or Winnie the Pooh?
Oddly, it censors pretty much all 20th century Chinese history (I tried getting it just to tell me about Sun Yatsen, then Hu Jintao, and lastly Mao's 1949 declaration of the PRC, each time it removed its response).
Maybe that's the best way to do it, but I feel like there's got to be a better way to censor.
Oh, you’re one of those idiots who thinks Winnie the Pooh is banned in China

That's actually Wuxia Pooh, an unrelated character who was mislabeled.
Wuxia Pooh has a cultivation level of 1st rate Golden Core after spending a tenfold century cultivating in 100 acre sacred wood sect
I didn't suggest Winnie the Pooh is banned anywhere.
The US literally funding the propagation of fake Tiananmen square massacre pics

ChatGPT deleted my question when I asked it wether it was allowed to critique the US and you want to talk about censorship because you can't compare an Asian man to a yellow cartoon bear?
Also "making something cheaper" has (almost) never been the motivator of allowing something, even if it would benefit business at large.
I guess it is smart enough to not engage in bad-faith conversations with propaganda-sponges. I'll have to give it a shake, sounds better than the Western models.
I mean honestly, try to get ChatGPT or anything else not to just spout US State Department sanctioned drivel at any point.
For the record, I didn't remove this comment which is kind of funny considering it was about censorship.
Get censored, nerd.
Well, yeah, we know you didn't remove it for racist bullshit because that's the mod's job.
It's already on the record, it says removed by moderator dumbass
lol. lmao. Can’t even compare an Asian person to a yellow character:19::84:
Even if Chinese models were banned, and Chinese cloud services for running models remotely were banned, the episode shows that the vast VC money spent on AI firms was wasteful. Since most AI firms are dependent on investment to cover overhead, a threat to those VC cashflows would prove ill to the companies' stock prices regardless of access/pratical impact of Deepseek R1.
IDK how you would even 'ban' DeepSeek V3 anyway, shit is open-source including all weights and training data
Well, I said we'd ban Chinese services not the model. Obviously, you can download the model. I've already done that. But even when run locally it is heavily censored. The new version of the model would require beefy hardware to run. Most consumers will need services to make the models useful. Just the model isn't enough.
So, we'd need a western version of this model to be trained and then run by some tech company before it makes a splash IMO.
"heavily censored" lmao. It's much easier to dance with than the ChatGPT one.
