Just eat something else holy shit.

I get that the price of eggs is shorthand for the price of all food, which has gone up, but eggs specifically have gotten so expensive that egg substitute is about the same price at this point.

You'll never believe what pasta is made of

[-] blackris@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Durum wheat semolina and water.

[-] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Wow! I didn't even know those things exited before reading the comments lol.

[-] kerrigan778@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Only fresh pasta is made with eggs, dry pasta typically doesn't use eggs. It's semolina durum wheat and water, pushed through copper dies and then dried.

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago

Huh I didn't know that thanks for informing me

[-] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Yellow pasta usually has eggs added, but eggs are not essential. As well as ignoring the eggs you can also substitute with spinach or tomatos (or squid ink or cocoa).

[-] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah but have you seen the price of squid ink these days?!

[-] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I must have got mine cheap cos it was 6 quid.

[-] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Liberals' tears!

[-] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Egg....like literally everything has egg in it. Sorry I got interrupted mid post. But I'm gonna go read all the comments. Some alternative photography processes use egg whites or yolks to sub or apply a layer to the film.

[-] Galapagon@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

What do you suggest as an easy healthy source of protein?

[-] db2@lemmy.world 34 points 2 weeks ago
[-] volvoxvsmarla@lemm.ee 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Legumes like beans, lentils, peas, hummus, chickpeas,

Oats, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, whole wheat products,

Tofu in its various forms, including silk tofu as egg replacement in pancakes,

Other "meat substitutes" like seitan or sunflower seed mince,

Nuts, nut butters, nut flour,

Dairy products such as cottage cheese, joghurt,

Soy milk

I mean for real, eggs are super unnecessary for a protein rich or healthy diet. I would argue that unless you literally want to treat yourself with a sunny side up or an omelette you shouldn't be using eggs at all. I like eggs, but a dozen lasts us (family of 3) a month easily.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 points 2 weeks ago

No I mean so I can fry it and get fat.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

Trust me, you can fry all those things and get fat.

[-] volvoxvsmarla@lemm.ee 1 points 2 weeks ago

Oh then try falafels. Jesus I can't bring myself to make falafels or something similar at home because you literally fry it in oil and you need to do that in order for the raw legumes to be not toxic.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 weeks ago

I like to airfry beans and eat them as a crunchy snack.

For breakfast specifically, oatmeal isn't a bad choice.

Seitan is also very high in protein, containing 75g of protein per 100g compared to 13g per 100g for scrambled eggs (although its low on lysine, so it should be balanced out with other protein sources).

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

I haven't bought a carton of eggs since 2023 because I refuse to buy them once they're higher than $2.50 a dozen.

[-] Peck@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

That's dumb. 2.50 is not a sustainable price. If you get local eggs from a humane farm, they are going to be expensive. It's just how it is man. If anything, that should cause you using them wiser.

[-] barsoap@lemm.ee 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

2.39 Euro, free-range, 10 piece. Organic is 3.39, barn 1.99, all incl. 7% VAT. so 12 barn ones would be 2.40. Granted, Aldi probably makes 0 profit from the barn ones but there's only so much they can squeeze farmers. We've long since outlawed cages.

You start a discussion on a discussion forum and then get surprised when someone starts discussing with you? How stupid are you?

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 0 points 2 weeks ago

Calm down babe it's just eggs.

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 weeks ago

Ah the classic โ€œme being an ass was just a jokeโ€ when called out on it.

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 1 points 2 weeks ago

No I really didn't ask about his opinion on my spending habits.

[-] abbadon420@lemm.ee 1 points 2 weeks ago

Sometimes it's just okay though. To have a commonly understood simplification of a societal problem to meme about with others to share the pain or burden of the problem with.

[-] random_character_a@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Well US has shitload of soy now

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah... morons just love to hang on the buzz word of the day.
