You know, i'm not envious of their living standards, even though they are better than mine. I'm glad for them. The part that actually almost makes me angry is how well he understands western societies. He understands us better than the vast majority of us do ourselves. And certainly better than we understand the other way around.
I spend a lot of time making an effort trying to educate and inform myself not only about the society that i live in but about others too, China in particular. And i still feel i have no hope of understanding China to the level that this guy understands the West. What kind of superhuman education do they receive over there and why can't we have it?
What gets me is not just that westerners don't understand the fundamentals of how the economy works here, which frankly isn't even that complicated, it's that people lash out whenever you start pointing out that the system serves the oligarchs who are exploiting them. There is an undercurrent of aggressive ignorance in western societies. I get the impression that it's really hard for people to accept that the whole promise of democracy is a lie and that they don't have any real agency within the system.
Imagine learning dialectical materialism and historical materialism not just from books, but in a structured setting from people who have been practicing and developing it for 75 years, at a college level.
