every time I see this guy I remember the comment from someone he went to grade school with talking about how even back then they remember all he cared about was being a politician, how he noticeably altered his personality based on how good it was for his political potential

I think that within many communites, there are those who are unpopular not because they run counter to it's values but because they gormlessly exemplify it's values, without pretense or ornamentation, in a way that exposes it's fundamental ugliness. I think maybe Trump and Buttigeg, while exhibiting very different tendencies, are disliked by so many liberals for the same fundamental reason. They are perfectly bleak distillations of their backgrounds in a way that leaves very little room for rationalization. Trump is clearly a disgusting idiot hog-child. Pete is clearly a craven sociopathic nothing-person. Both are walking repudiations of liberalism's romantic self-mythology about the great men of vision and character who rise to the top.
