i wonder what caused the "standards" to rise between 1800-1850 (the golden age of artistic standards). i mean we all know Manet is responsible for the slump in the late 1800s, when he painted sex workers and refused to pretend they were paintings of greek goddesses, and it's obvious the plateau in the 1920s was because Dali was ok but a bit weird, and then of course that darn Jackson Polock made it all come crashing down by making paintings that DON"T LOOK LIKE ANYTHING
but what happened in the 1840s to raise the standards? i'm going to assume it's some whitebread american landscape painter
