I'm often all for piracy, but Silksong? Come on man. They actually put their heart into their games and charge a reasonable price.

[-] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 75 points 3 months ago

Don't care. What little money I have is best spent on necessities.

[-] I_Voxgaard@hexbear.net 31 points 3 months ago

correct answer

[-] tetris11@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 months ago

whilst true, you didnt have to post this so proudly

stealing apples from your local farmer is a crime everyone probably commits at some point, but you don't and shouldn't brag about it

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 43 points 3 months ago

Oh my god can you can it with the liberal tears, the gnashing and wailing over something that isn't even fucking theft?

Stealing apples deprives a farmer of an actual physical good, data is infinitely replicable at essentially no cost. The devs already got paid, what, you think the people actually programming this shit haven't gotten a paycheck the entire time? That isn't how this works unless it's a solo dev doing all this shit by themselves, which I promise you they're not after a massively successful first game

FYI some studies have shown piracy raises revenue for the 'official version' by exposing it to more people that would have without it, some of whom go on to purchase or spread via word of mouth etc to others that will

Apples aren't copied, if you steal an apple from someone you are depriving them of an apple. Copies of games don't deprive anybody of anything other than money.

[-] take_five_moments@hexbear.net 28 points 3 months ago

idk i steal apples all the time

[-] QuillcrestFalconer@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago

My grandma has a house in a rural zone and I would pass through an apple orchard and just pick up some apples that were on the ground. They would be left to rot otherwise

[-] I_Voxgaard@hexbear.net 25 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

the game is still there for people who want it.

and with the amount of food waste in modern economies this really isn't the analogy you want it to be

[-] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago

Smol bean farmer = multi-million dollar studio?

[-] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

That's a pretty expensive handheld is it not?

Just saying.

Edit: Everyone chill, I'm just broke and jealous haha.

[-] pinguinu@lemmygrad.ml 36 points 3 months ago

Aw the poor little devs only made millions with their first game

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 29 points 3 months ago

And they crashed Steam's checkout system yesterday. They're going to be alright.

[-] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 31 points 3 months ago

Mid level-ish? $200? Compared to something like an Odin or an ROG, or some of the newer Anbernics, I dont think so.

There's also some other Retroid users on this site.

[-] roux@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Also the Retroid Pocket 5's hardware makes it a pretty much one and done purchase. I have 4-5 emulators and I probably spent 3x that on them all said and done. Their hardware runs the gamut of barely emulating N64 to being able to play almost all retro up to but not the Retroid Pocket 4. $200 for something that will be good for the next 10 years is smart.

[-] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

Been playing a lot of Switch stuff on the 5 and its been a tank. Some crashes but I can chalk that up to switch emu itself rather than the specs

[-] roux@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

If it can emulate Switch I actually might grab it as my Christmas gift lol. Not only is that dope as fuck but while we are processing this divorce, I'm realizing that since our oldest plays my Switch mostly, a lot of his hours clocked are on that. Might just let him keep it and grad an RP5 lol.

[-] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

Yeah, im happy to talk about it! Eden is my emulator of choice, it makes getting the latest drivers super easy. It also just got a new update 3 days ago thats pretty rad. Helps with some compatability issues. You can also get older versions of emulators to try out if needed, depending on the game. Its a pretty fun little project, but I enjoy tinkering here and there.

[-] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 31 points 3 months ago

Oh, if your point is that i have no money, then its about a year old.

[-] I_Voxgaard@hexbear.net 30 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

you won't believe this but they has a fridge and microwave too

[-] take_five_moments@hexbear.net 28 points 3 months ago

who gives a fuck

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

No, not really. Pretty much the cheapest of it's kind imo. Anything x86 is going to be at least double, if not triple or more. Switch 2 is double the price. Anything cheaper is making significant compromises and imo isn't comparable.

edit: just going to keep talking because I've been very interested in these devices lately. I'd say the closest comparison devices would be like the odin 2 which has a more powerful chip but is $300, or the Thor which starts at $250 for the same chip as the Retroid pocket 5 (handheld OP has). Anbernic recently put out an all metal handheld for $280, worse processor and smaller screen though. Those are probably the three its most comparable to it. RP5 is a really good value for what's currently on the market.

[-] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 months ago

FWIW I own an ungodly amount of these stupid little handheld consoles. Anbernic stuff is the best IMO but the retroid is also pretty neat.

Main beef with the retroid is just that it runs android. The devices with minimal Linux systems are way cooler IMO.

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago

The pocket 5 runs rocknix as well, as does the Odin 2. Linux definitely has some good things going for it but I'm coming around on android a bit, the sleep is much better.

I have an Anbernic xx device and love it, its just a different beast then the RP5. snes/gba is where I feel like my xx shines, not gamecube/wii/ps2/light switch.

[-] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago

I've personally never had sleep issues with my Linux handhelds but as a daily Linux desktop user I'm painfully aware that it's not on par with android.

All the android bloat just drives me nuts. I just don't really love having the playstore and email and all that on my gaming device.

The simplicity of the Linux devices and the way they just do one thing really appeals to me.

FWIW I don't actually care much to play any games past PS1/N64 on handheld. Anything later just feels better suited for a desktop or steam deck (totally different class of device IMO).

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 32 points 3 months ago

The developer (Team Cherry) has three employees. Off of concurrent player count on Steam alone (so not including Playstation, Xbox, Switch sales) they made $10 million in a day. They're going to be ok if somebody pirates their game.

[-] roux@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

Silksong is gonna make another cool $15 million for Team Cherry. I'll end up buying 4 more copies before it's said and done so that at the very least offsets Corgi pirating it. I'm also pretty sure TC are the kinds of devs like the Ultrakill or Disco Elysium devs that would rather you just pirate and enjoy it if you can't afford it. This is also the mentality of people like Devon Price, the author of Unmasking Autism, who has said as much. Some creators are actually chill people.

[-] MasterBlaster@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 3 months ago

pro-piracy morals aren't rooted in the idea that publishers/developers are opponents who behave poorly enough that they 'deserve' piracy of their products, so there is no product so uniquely good and crafted by 'the good ones' that you should be expected not to pirate it.

pro-piracy morals are rooted in the fact that art is now free to infinitely distribute. continued artificial restriction of art & culture will not be tolerated by anyone educated enough
