If I take the time to call someone out I should really take the time to make sure it's right, but thanks for being chiller than me

[-] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago

Wait I'm confused, what did they mean instead?

spoilered slur in initialsIt was a different slur, not an ableist one >> "C U Next Tuesday"

[-] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

You can click on this button on any comment to be taken to the instance of that comments' author. There you can see words that get caught up in our slur filter as well as comments from defederated instances (in the case the post itself is from another lemmy thingy).

edit: The modlog is also open to the public, if you're interested in seeing removed comments and the like

Most Lemmy instances seem to have a far more lenient slur filter than us, the C-word isn't filtered and far more shockingly m****loid doesn't seem to be filtered by other instances either what-the-hell

Wow, english is my second language and I genuinely had no idea this word is a slur

[-] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

It is regional. From my understanding in Australia it is almost a term of endearment, but in the US it is very much perceived as a gendered slur.

From Aus. Here it essentially depends on the context and adjective proceeding the word and can be substituted for 'person',

slur discussion including censored ableist slurs

i.e.. good c* means 'good person', funny c* means 'funny person'.

Calling someone a dumb c* may mean 'oh you silly billy' (endearing/condescending) or 'you f-ing m*ron' (insulting) depending on context, more likely the latter.

Overwhelmingly it used in this manner by men to refer to other men.

On its own it is almost certainly negative.

You would not use it in polite company

It is not as widely used as some people would like to pretend online (though it is heavily used by some)

I thought the removed word was the ableist "r-word".
