Selmak was frustrating, but never a douche, in my opinion.
In fact, Jacob had such a strong impact on Selmak that they became almost a liability as far as the other tokra were concerned. He was too tempted to ignore thousands of years of protocol and precedent to assist the SGC.
It's a riff I have going with my wife that no one wants to hang out with the Tok'ra, and especially no one wants to hang out with the ancients, however, all of the great races want to hang with O'neil because (in your best Thor impression) "he's a good hang"

Fun fact: the actor ad-libbed in "locked" instead of "encoded" originally, and it worked well enough that it became a thing right then, pretty much.
Gary Jones is a treasure. Him, Peter DeLuise, (and the very rare Chris Judge) are easily the best of the DVD audio commentaries.
