Please pronounce his name wrong to make the title pun work better.

Anyway - Javier Milei, a caricature of a libertarian invented deep in the Hexbear Bit Factory, has won the Argentinian general election; and with a 12 point lead over Massa, it wasn't even particularly close. There are several analogies for this situation - Trump beating Hillary, Bolsonaro winning in 2018, or the alternate universe where Le Pen beat Macron. Massa is not a great guy. The last couple years have been difficult for Argentina, facing massive inflation and the same general economic downturns that are happening everywhere.

Milei is an... interesting person. To name just a couple things going on in his deeply bizarre life, he has a very special relationship with his sister, and an even more special relationship with his mastiff, Conan. When Conan died in 2017, he was so utterly distraught that he had him cloned into four new dogs, named Murray, Milton, Robert, and Lucas, for his economist idols. And he uses mediums to speak to his dead dog. This is probably the closest we're ever going to get to having a dog be president of a country.

Milei wants to essentially collapse the economy even harder. Playing off the general public sentiment of "dollar = good, peso = bad", he has vowed to make the national currency of Argentina the US dollar, thus eagerly giving a massive amount of control over the Argentinian economy directly to America. He wants to take a chainsaw to the status quo, cut off trade with communist countries like China, and demolish the Central Bank. Will Argentinian capitalists and the Senate let him do this? Probably not. What happens with their membership in BRICS+? Who knows. Where does Peronism go from here? Who can say.

But he still won, and will now be president. I suppose that every dog has its day.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

NYT: Why I Am a Liberal

More than at any other time since World War II, liberalism is under siege. On the left, some people insist that liberalism is exhausted and dying and unable to handle the problems posed by entrenched inequalities, corporate power and environmental degradation. On the right, some people think that liberalism is responsible for the collapse of traditional values, rampant criminality, disrespect for authority and widespread immorality.

Fascists reject liberalism. So do populists who think that freedom is overrated. In ways large and small, antiliberalism is on the march. So is tyranny.

Many of the marchers misdescribe liberalism; they offer a caricature. Perhaps more than ever, there is an urgent need for a clear understanding of liberalism — of its core commitments, of its breadth, of its internal debates, of its evolving character, of its promise, of what it is and what it can be. Here is one attempt at an account, in the form of 34 sets of claims about liberalism.

Today's challenge is see how far you can get down this list before you have an aneurysm. I personally managed to get to point 18 before I had to stop:

Liberals abhor the idea that life or politics is a conflict between friends and enemies. They associate that idea with fascism and with Dachau and Auschwitz.

Liberalism is a wide tent. John Locke thought differently from Adam Smith [...] Liberals argue fiercely with one another. Many of the important practitioners of liberalism [...] did not commit themselves to foundational philosophical commitments of any kind

A liberal might think that Ronald Reagan was a great president and that Franklin Delano Roosevelt was an abomination; a liberal might think that Roosevelt was a great president and that Reagan was an abomination. Liberals have divergent views about negative liberty (the right to be free from government intrusion) and positive liberty (the right to receive government help)

Liberals like laughter. They are anti-anti-laughter.

It's like a motherlode holy shit

Some liberals want to go to brunch. Some want to go to the wine cave. Others again want to go to the Epstein island.

MLK on the collage mlk-yes

sigh post the quote:

"During the lifetime of great revolutionaries, the oppressing classes constantly hounded them, received their theories with the most savage malice, the most furious hatred and the most unscrupulous campaigns of lies and slander. After their death, attempts are made to convert them into harmless icons, to canonize them, so to say, and to hallow their names to a certain extent for the “consolation” of the oppressed classes and with the object of duping the latter, while at the same time robbing the revolutionary theory of its substance, blunting its revolutionary edge and vulgarizing it." -Vladimir Lenin

Whats the % on this author having at some point within the past weeks called Trump "a thousand times worse than Biden"?

Edit: Checked and no, this is one of those demons who proclaims a political ideology then takes no political stances in the slightest, does nothing but talk endlessly about legal minutiae and technicalities then retweets one single tweet about US aid giving 1 dollar to an Ecuadorian farmer.

What a roundabout way of saying “I’m a stupid little baby who has no idea what the fuck I’m talking about and my conception of politics is dumber and less developed than that of an infant”

[-] SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

My favourite parts are when the author is like "Sometimes liberals believe in X. Sometimes liberals believe in the exact opposite of X." and then other times it's like "If you don't believe in this, then you're illiberal." I bet you could match every statement in this article up to a different sentence that contradicts it even within their own ideology.

Vibes-based political analysis

[-] KittyBobo@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago

When I was in highscool I read a book called "Why We're Liberals". I wanted to get into politics because as a queer kid in the rural south US I at least knew enough about politics to know the conservatives weren't on my side. And let me tell you that book was the most pusilanimous swill I've ever had the displeasure of reading. It was basically just the author describing problems like gay rights but then whining that it's not important enough to do anything about it right now, that there were much more important problems to also ignore. I swear that book must have been an op because even as a child I immediately realized neolib politics was never going to help people and in the absence of any alternative I just gave up thinking about changing things. The frustrating thing about liberals when they say "we'll get to it eventually, you can't expect to have your rights overnight" is its true, they act like they need to tell queer people that like we don't already know. But the answer to that isn't to sit on your thumbs, if something is difficult and will take a lot of time that means you should start working on it now instead of later. They dangle these carrots to get you to vote for them but actually doing anything isn't political expedient for them.

The rule of law is central to liberalism. ... It forbids unduly rapid changes in the law.

It's pretty funny how dipshits like this think that people just aren't accepting enough of the only political philosophy most of them have been exposed to their entire lives by having it crammed down their throats in both electoral politics and mainstream media, and that they just need to be told to open their mouths a little wider and swallow another load of horseshit along with all the rest, and that will surely improve things somehow.
