There was a lot of this in Poland for pope John Paul 2. When he lived there was tons of his merch, but rather in places where you would expect it, shops for devouts, stands in pilgrim gatherings, catholic bookstores etc. But as he got old, some entrepreneur types predicted humongous celebrations and hype after he died and preemptively produced tons upon tons of more merch. Some of them years before he actually croaked. And when he finally did, celebrations were indeed humongous, but largely in media, church and all levels of government. Turns out, that personality cult for a guy who didn't displayed a shred of personality for at least 40 last years of life, was overestimated and fuelled by church bootlickers with public money.
So that mountains of merch quickly flooded the bargain bins, like the luxurious paper albums sold for 5% of the nominal price and so on. A lot of abovementioned entrepreneurs went under on this business and some stashes were discovered even years later.
That's hilarious, but apparently there are some places that still love John Paul II. Mexican F1 driver Sergio Perez keeps a picture of him in his car.
I mean there are people celebrating all kinds of scumbags out there so there would be some for this one too, my point was that the crazy personality cult of him was overblown and ride on taxpayers money (including probably over 1000 monuments to him in Poland of which most were build at least partially with public money).
