I'm looking for some advice, recently my pixel 6a and a pixel 8a both have the same annoying behaviour, periodically the three bottom buttons stop working or lag to an extreme degree, so the back button, home button and app switcher.

I suspect it's related to 3rd party launchers, I use Action Launcher but was able to replicate it on Lawnchair as well.

I've currently got the default Pixel/Nexus launcher selected as a test (I hate it), so far it seems to be immune from this issue. Are 3rd party launchers all suffering from the same issue? Anything I can do?

EDIT: Thankfully the pixel launcher also started doing this eventually so I can happily switch back to action launcher while I choose a new phone!

If you think the fairphone 6 is a silly choice, please persuade me otherwise as that's what I'm currently thinking, with a view to a 5 year+ phone

m.2 SATA SSD advice (lemmy.world)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by calamitycastle@lemmy.world to c/buildapc@lemmy.world

I'm waiting on a standoff kit to come in the mail, as this is my next troubleshooting step

I bought this SSD to fit into a thin client. I am new to stick drives so I think it's correct that I can only insert it one way due to the M-key (my port only has one divider, unlike the memory stick).

I don't have a standoff so the stick is in but at a slight angle.

The PC has no operating system yet so is it correct that a blank drive should show up in the BIOS at least? It shows the m.2 slot as being empty currently. Or is it potentially readable as is, but needs something on it to format it?

The plan is to chuck Debian on it to boot into, via a thumb drive, but I wanted to make sure it was at least installed correctly (I mean, it isn't because it should have a standoff).

If when my standoff kit arrives, the drive still doesn't show in the BIOS what would you recommend I do next?

EDIT: thank you so much for the advice so far! I added a standoff and I can now see 500Gb in the BIOS. Truthfully it might have already been recognised, there is a section for M.2 in the BIOS which was reading empty but it also lists primary hard drive and it's showing up there. Now to install me some Debian

I'm watching it and trying to figure out if it's like a parody video or a serious recommendation?

The comments on the video are super weird as well. Can someone please tell me I'm not going crazy and that the majority of the people in the YT comments have been huffing solvents / aren't real?

Also fishing for any good 'best way to clean your drivetrain' videos that are less weird and potentially wrong

Watching the f1 academy live and it's crazy that they're still on the track, trundling around behind the safety car

Trump's tariff war has significantly impacted F1's operation. Many high-end teams are reportedly fearing an increase in expenses, which puts a big question mark on the future of the sport in the USA.

That's about as definitive as this non article gets FYI

Please forgive the annoying asking for info post

I have 100Gb of stuff on Google drive and I want to move it in house, I guess via Nextcloud? At the same time I want to try things like self hosting Notesnook and a few other things like ad blocking the home network etc

I was going to try starting with a raspberry pi 5 with 8Gb of ram and an SSD and some form of Linux obvs but in my limited reading I've seen that's very not recommended for Nextcloud.

Key things are low power usage/quiet, I'm not THAT fussed about download speed to other devices but keen to avoid as much lock in as possible. Budget around £200-300 to start with.

I've seen recommendations for thin clients, kinda like the idea of a NUC but they're pricy for the form factor. Having it be small would be a plus but I do have an old windows 8 machine from 2013 in the cupboard in an ATX case but the power supply draw feels like it would be excessive

Hints appreciated or tell me which community to go check, thanks in advance

EDIT: Thanks for all the hints!

Or is this not possible on Lemmy generally?

What a cutie. Hope you're feeling OK, I'm sure she had a wonderful life

Similar risks I would say. The UK by and large chose "the sensible option" in the last general election. The equivalent of Harris/dems, or the "anti chaos" option.

Reelecting Trump vs reelecting the Tories is a fair comparison, especially as the Tories are moving further and further right wing.

In summary the labour party have about 3 years to make some noticeable impact to people's lives in the UK, but all that against the backdrop of huge financial issues incurred during the past decade or so, increasing war and conflict and now the Trump presidency.

There very well maybe people who will follow the conservative party on their way further right. The UK already had it's brexit moment and has not really learned from it fully.

The whole article is gory. This was written by either an idiot or a robot. Paragraph 1:

Though Deck Nine has been developing new Life is Strange games for some time, the recently released Double Exposure is the first to revisit the characters from the 2015 original, resulting in some controversy.

The first Deck Nine LiS game revisits the characters from the 2015 original 🙃

I'm looking forward to the game, not sure why it's allowed review scores on Steam before it's released though.

Nice little storyline. Always nice to have some from mum and dad's POV

Constructors is definitely going to McLaren if you ask me, and that's Piastri vs Perez ultimately.

If a bad weekend for Max still returns second place, I think he has done enough to hang on, but let's see! Couple of DNFs and we've got a title fight

Used to be the norm back in the day though. I'm saying 15 years or so before the old internet disappeared with AWS etc.

Self hosted should be an option and I think this is a reasonable requirement tbqh. Yeah it's not 0 work but it's not a hardship either, really, given the many hours that are going to be needed on netcode anyway. Especially if you know this going in to development.

Fuck me the UK is so broken.

Why don't they put some effort towards legislating a transport strategy that works. At least London managed to see off the ULEZ protest vote... I would guess officer Darin probably thinks ULEZ is bullshit, what a narc
